I''m looking at 2 AGS Princess cut stone and need to make a decision on the e-ring.

Stone 1:

0.70 carats
4.82x4.82x3.63
F color
VS2
AGS cut grade 2 (very good)
75.5% depth, 66.5% table
Fluorescene: Neglible

$2400

Stone 2:

0.83 carats
5.20x5.17x3.39
D color
SI1 (completely eye clean, multiple pinpoints, but I''m surprised its not a VS grade)
AGS cut grade 7 (fair)
65.6% depth, 76.5% table

Fluorescene: Medium Blue (I don''t see it)

$2900

I''m having a tough time deciding.

The first stone is clearly better cut, I enjoy the way it gives off light, but I can''t even really say it 3/4 of a carat as its only 70 points, and I''m willing to spend more. It is a nice stone.

The second stone is clearly whiter and larger. Since it is a little shallow, it measures 5.2 x 5.2 and clearly looks larger and would be more mistaken for being closer to 1 carat than it really is. It gives off light different (smaller shots of light, and not necesarily symetrical) as compared to the first.

Now, my girlfriend is not a big diamond person, so she would probably like the larger and whiter of the two. But part of me thinks I should buy the better cut one. Price is not an issue. Then again, people say, when in doubt go larger.

What does everyone else think?

can you find one that is a cut 0 or at least one? The best cut will give you the most sparkle and fire. I would only get an AGS cut 0; I wouldn't consider those cuts above
Go to Whiteflash's website and pick the Princess Cut above and then search that way for the best cuts. Best cut = gorgeous diamond

I would get this one for approx 2500 and it is a .71 carat gorgeous cut.

or this one for 2300

Here is this princess too from GOG

I wouldn''t consider the second stone because of the cut, and you can still do better than the first stone. All of the stones Skippy posted would be much better choices.

Skippy said it best. I did not like your 2 choices either (sorry). WF has some fantastic stones and they are a great choice

Buy the D color.............. I''m a G.G. and have been selling enagagement rings for 12 years...the most important thing is that she likes the look of the D color better and she is the one who will be looking at this stone 45 times a day for the rest of her life (ideally). PLUS the dimensions are significantly larger.....once it is mounted, you will like this stone better. AND it''s a D COLOR (we jewelers love D colors and that''s what we buy for ourselves!). The trick with a slightly shallow stone is to keep the pavilion (bottom of the stone) clean, and it was look very sparkly - in fact, ice white since it''s a D color.

Don''t get so caught up in the mathematics of the cut for a PRINCESS cut of this size. The cut grading system originally applied only to ROUNDS and only recently has been extended to princesses....Princesses, as a whole, do not enjoy a reputation as well cut stones.

Now, if you want to continue looking, please look at a radiant. Radiants are usually better cut and have a better dimension for the same carat weight as a princess. 8 out of 10 times that I show a radiant to a client who wants a princess, they buy the radiant!
