I would like to reset my 30-yr. old engagement ring. It has a 2.04 round diamond. I just recently inherited my grandmother''s mine-cut 2-carat diamond. Hers faces up slightly smaller than mine, but both stone''s colors and clarities look good together.

I would LOVE to put both these stones together in one ring, but would appreciate opinions. (I also have a number of smaller stones from tiny to .50 size I could add to the engagment and/or wedding ring.) I would like it to look more like a wedding ring than a free-form dinner ring with both stones offset...you know, the squiggly gold kind with diamonds scattered like stars.

I do have a lovely 1.25 carat ruby...I was thinking about a 3-stone ring as one idea, putting the ruby in the center with a halo to bring it up to the size of the diamonds....maybe not as pretty in person as in my mind???

I have no idea how of how to proceed....any ideas would be welcome.

I should add that I have long fingers and larger hands!
TIA

that sounds neat... let me find a ring I like that brings to mind.

how about you ''lend'' me the mine cut?

i''m having a hard time picturing the 3-stone with a halo''d ruby. what ring size do you wear? 2 2-cts plus a 1.25 ruby in a halo equals serious finger coverage!

maybe a larger colored stone (2.25-50) in the center (jeff white sapphire?) for an absolutely drool-worthy 3-stone?

what about something like 777_LDY''s WF custom tapered eternity ring? you might even get to use some of those extra melee lying around the house!

This is just a low cost setting but it gives the idea...

That is a wonderful problem to have two 2 ct. stones to reset! However, I would not put them in the same ring with one being modern cut and the other being old mine cut and the sizes not being exact. I think two 2 ct. stones plus small stones in one ring would be a little over the top anyway. I''d seriously look at setting the stones separately. You could make a fabulous right hand ring with that old mine cut stone, and just reset your engagement ring stone into a new wedding set!

Ditto, or put the other one in a pendant??? Sounds like a fun project!!!

Hmmm...the two stones might not look good together since they''re different cuts, and 2 2 caraters in one ring would definitely be super blingy. However, if you like the way they look together and you can pull it off, I would go with a larger center stone-maybe a blue sapphire-and skip the halo. Either way I hope you show us what you end up with!

Sounds like a great idea to use both of them. I have always liked the bypass design posted by strmrdr. I can''t wait to see what you decide to do with them.

I'd do it vertically, honestly. I have a friend who had two 1 cts in a filigree bypass setting, both with a halo, and it makes her finger look strangely wide. Perhaps it was just the angle at which they were set or the space between them, but I always thought that if I had her dilemma (bliss!!) I would have stacked them vertically. Whatever you do though, I have a feeling that will be a BEAUTIFUL ring.

You all are great! I am brand new to this forum, and you all just jumped in to help me. I really am touched. I am starting to think that maybe I should put both stones in two separate pieces of jewelry. But I haven''t given up.

If only I could buy the third diamond, here is the ultimate three-stone ring:

I have to agree with thing2, I would''nt combine them if one is a new RB and the other is an old cut OMC or OEC because old cuts are so completely different than modern RBs in their look and how the perform. I''d just set the OMC in either an antique setting for a RHR, or perhaps as a pendant. And if you want a bigger look for your ering, maybe just look for a setting that gives you more finger coverage. That would be my pick...

This is very pretty and suitable to your specs. Have you considered trading in the stone from your ering and making a three stone with the heirloom stone in the center and two smaller ones flanking it?

I''m going to go ahead and paste some possibilities for your two round cuts, because it seems, ultimately, you''d like to make a piece with the two of them. I think you should keep in mind though, there aren''t tons of two stone designs out there, and if you force yourself into making something just because you have two lovely stones, you may end up with a ring you are not very happy with at all. Just something to consider..

I like this first one because some of the metal covers portions of the stones. This will be good for because you have two stones with different cuts and will help to confuse the eye because you aren''t seeing the whole diamond. It will also maximize finger real estate, since you have two large stones.

Now, keep an open mind with this next one. The design is definitely very unique, I don''t really like it, but I love the idea of it. I like this one for two reasons. Number one, they are actually two pieces of jewelry and while they are stackable, they can also be worn by themselves. I really like the idea of you making a stackable ring that can be worn together or one as a RHR and the other as an Ering. Gives you a lot versatility.

Here is a view of the ring with the bands stacked. The other thing I like, as you can see, is when the rings are stacked one on top of the other, the stones are a distance apart. Again this helps make it much less apparent that you have two stones that are different cuts and a little off in terms of size.

The next two are just examples of some different orientations that you can consider. This first one has the stones facing different directions, there is some variety in that and it also distracts the eye from noticing any variation in cut or size.

Here is an example of the vertical orientation that Elmorton was speaking of, I think it looks rather nice, much more modern than a horizontal bypass.

Another vertical, this time with some pave and utilizing the halo effect. Excuse the little blurb that got caught in my screen shot!

yes I just saw these the other day - perhaps will look nicer with diamonds ?
Some good suggestions by Somehowcollide - personally the only one I would really consider is the last one with the pave, but thats just imho.
I think I''ll have to agree with others on this - makes much more sense to use just one diamond in the ring, then the other either in a pendant or perhaps even a second ring.
I''m also not sure you will be able to use the ruby in the way you''ve descirbed due to such a large size difference. 3 stone rings look loveliest when the proportions are correct imho..I haven''t seen a 3 stone ring with a halo just on the centre stone - but thats not to say it can''t be done

If it were me, I''d choose the favourite stone for the ring and start a second project with the other. Of course which is up to which one you love more..After all, a 2ct is quite a big ring, so perhaps trying to make it 4ct+ will be "too much" (pls don''t sacrifice me to the PS Gods for saying so!!!

Lucky you! I would have to agree that two in one ring might be too much.

I would love to see you put that OMC in a vintage setting. They just go together like bread and butter. Here''s a couple threads with antique cuts to give you some ideas. And good luck!

HI:

I love the bypass idea--and any other antiquey looking ring for two large stones. Many estate dealers have really lovely filigree settings that one could get inspiration from....

cheers--Sharon

That is SERIOUS SUPER BLING!!

Thank you all again for all the time and effort you''ve spent trying to help me. I''m going to a big city (I''m in a little one) this weekend, so I may just browse some B&M stores and get familiar with what''s out there.

A little voice inside is telling me that all of you who said "don''t put them both in the same ring" are probably spot-on. They like fraternal twins, these diamonds. But I''ll show them to a jeweler or two and see what they say. And I''ll show you all what I end up doing.

Thanks again. So glad I found this site. It is so much fun reading the posts on this forum. It''s always exciting to be around people with passions!

You might want to consider either Leon Mege or Maytal Hannah to make one or both projects. Here are their links:

I think it''ll be twice the fun to set them separately! Then you can make each one special without trying to combine two stones that really have different character.
