Woah... this could be a big clvster**** for a lot of people. Certain kinds of income are treated differently in terms of taxation (combat pay for instance). Plus, if you were stationed in different states you (may/probably) have to file in those multiple jurisdictions, the rules for all of which will vary.

Just perusing a bit through this thread, and this caught my eye. As FYI, basic tax prep services on base were staffed by volunteers (usually retired military members who were tax savvy or former CPAs, etc.) for years, and that service was free to junior enlisted members & military retirees. Then they moved to 'paid' tax preparers; however, the services (just like childcare) are paid for by the people who use them ... not the government/taxpayers. The gov just facilitates the services on base, clearances, access, payroll, etc. The freeze doesn't mean military personnel won't be able to get their taxes done; they will just need to go off base like everyone else in the mean time. Unless things have changed, most mil pay is taxable like everything else, unless earned in a combat/tax-free zone, in which case it's not included in taxable income on the tax forms, so it's pretty straightforward, really. You don't need to file in multiple states; only your 'home state of record', which most keep the same as where they are originally from or their current state if the tax benefit is better. I did our taxes myself all the time, and we had bonuses in combat zones, combat pay, were from two different states, etc.

Childcare is the same, but even snopes addressed this misunderstanding by some bases that they were actually exempt, but no one corrected the record.

Once again, these stories are not what the media (or twitter) make them out to be. Taking (and sharing) tweets as 'fact' (without understanding how things work or if they're even true) is just fueling the flames of ignorance and divisiveness. And I don't mean you personally - DeeJay or Telephone; but in general. That is why I have largely stayed out of this thread. :wavey:

Jenn, thanks for adding this info, which is consistent with the basic data I had gotten from the posted link. An important part of what you posted is that people will now have to go off-site to get their taxed done. And that is part of my fear -- they may not end up in the hands of someone who is familiar with the military scenario, but could instead choose to go to a convenient H&R Block (for example) and get a preparer who is not (as) familiar with the ins and out of military pay. And I also understand what you're saying about the jurisdiction in which to file, but the people at H&R (again, for example) are not always well-versed in multi-state filings so somone's taxes may not be done correctly from a jurisdiction standpoint. But of this this is all speculation on my part -- people may choose todo their own taxes, and do them perfectly, or go to a preparer (H&R or otherwise) who also does them perfectly. My fear though, is that will not necessarily be the case.

It's not really a 'multi-state' jurisdiction issue; their "home of record" state (where their state taxes were paid) are clearly noted on their W2 just like everyone else's, so the preparer would just need to use that state's tax form. The people who staff the on-base tax offices aren't flown/moved in from other states to do tax prep or anything; they're usually from that area's local community, just like any other CPA, tax preparer, HR Block, etc.

Believe me - as a former service member - if I thought this was some huge/big deal, I'd be furious and stomping my feet about it; but really, it's not. It's just an inconvenience that will likely be remedied if not this tax season, by the next one ... like hitting traffic on the way into work today, but the road is clear tomorrow. And I assure you, military folks face WAY worse problems than where they get their taxes done. ;)

"When Bill Owens went to collect the body of his son at Dover Air Force Base, he found out that the president of the United States was also on his way to pay his respects as the casket of Chief Special Warfare Officer William 'Ryan' Owens was unloaded. But he told the chaplain, 'I'm sorry, I don't want to see him. I told them I don't want to meet the president.' The elder Owens, himself a military veteran, tells the Miami Herald that more than shunning President Trump, 'I want an investigation' into the death of his son, the only American casualty in a botched raid in Yemen, and the first American combat death of Trump's term. 'The government owes my son an investigation.' Owens says he's been troubled by Trump since he went after a Gold Star family while on the campaign trail.

Says a White House rep, per the AP: 'I can't imagine what this father is going through. His son is a true American hero, and we should forever be in his son's debt.' But Owens questions the very purpose of the mission:'Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn't even barely a week into his administration? Why? For two years prior, there were no boots on the ground in Yemen—everything was missiles and drones—because there was not a target worth one American life. Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?' The entire Herald article, which profiles 37-year-old Ryan Owens extensively, is worth a read."

I did see this story; it is troubling. I've read multiple, conflicting reports about the raid and about Trump's knowledge of it, etc.

Spicer on Thursday stressed the raid was first conceived by the military under President Barack Obama's administration. According to a timeline he outlined, U.S. Central Command first submitted a plan to the Pentagon on Nov. 7, when defense legal teams vetted it. On Dec. 19, it was approved by the Defense Department and recommended by then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter to move ahead.

The national security staff at the White House approved it and convened a meeting on Jan. 6 of the National Security Council Deputies Committee – among the highest interagency organizations for national security issues – which approved the plan "so easily it was sent straight up," Spicer said.

The plan at the time called for a moonless night to carry out the raid, which would only happen next once Trump had become president, Spicer said.

Let me makes this clear (before I get accused of not being a feminist or woman-shaming or something): I would post the following pics whether the person on the couch was a man or a woman -- I think this behavior is far too casual under the circumstances. Please, Ms. Conway, conduct yourself with a little more decorum in circumstances like this.

Text from the article:

Photos of White House adviser Kellyanne Conway kneeling on an Oval Office couch with her shoes on have sparked an online debate about decorum in the executive mansion.

Conway is seen perched on her knees on the couch with her feet behind her in photos taken Monday while President Donald Trump met with leaders of historically black colleges and universities. Other photos show Conway leaning over to take a smartphone picture of the event.

Some Twitter users were quick to highlight the photos as evidence of a lack of respect for the office from Conway and the Trump administration. Other users have countered with numerous photos of former President Barack Obama resting his feet on the office's desk during his time in office.

Conway hasn't weighed in on the criticism.

What's really sad is that if you listen (or read) the transcript of the interview, the person conducting the interview 100% led him to that answer. This is NOT to blame the interviewer (they probably wanted ratings and people to talk about it), but the fact that POTUS can be convinced of something moronic in .5 seconds without any question of the facts behind it is truly sad and frightening.

OBAMA DID IT!!!

Snip:

"NBC reports that in addition to Ryan’s death, “six other U.S. service members were wounded. And at least 25 civilians were killed, including nine children under the age of 13, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.”

And despite Trump’s attempt to dodge accountability, NBC reports that “

lans for the raid were begun during the Obama administration, but Obama officials declined to sign off on what officials described as a significant escalation in Yemen. Just five days in, Trump greenlighted the mission.

In a previous report, NBC cited a “senior U.S. military official” who said “almost everything went wrong” during the day. In the days following, U.S. CENTCOM acknowledged that “regrettably… civilian non-combatants were likely killed in the midst of a firefight during a raid in Yemen January 29. Casualties may include children.”

oh wait, I forgot about this lovely tweet (one of my new favorites). C5cZPnNWUAAQkne.jpg

From MSNBC:

"Trump went on to talk about his presence at the airport when Owens’ remains returned. He added, in reference to the mission, “This was something that they were looking at for a long time.” The president concluded that it was “a very successful mission,” which produced “tremendous amounts of information.”

There are a couple of key problems with Trump’s assessment. First, it’s genuinely bizarre to hear a Commander in Chief, reflecting on a mission he personally authorized, try to avoid responsibility for the mission he green-lit. I realize Trump’s new at this, but as a rule, presidents at least try to appear accountable.

Second and more important is the fact that Trump’s version of events is at odds with the available evidence. As Rachel noted on the show last week, Team Trump has maintained in recent weeks that it was the Obama administration that approved the mission at a meeting of the National Security Council on Jan. 6, even if it was carried out soon after Trump took office.

That was directly contradicted by Colin Kahl, a deputy assistant to President Obama and National Security Advisor to Vice President Biden, who participated in that National Security Council meeting and explained that no such decision was made. On the contrary, officials expected the new administration to begin its own deliberative process to evaluate whether the operation should go ahead.

Trump instead approved the mission over dinner at the White House residence, alongside political adviser Steve Bannon. While the deadly raid was underway, the president did not go to the Situation Room and did not monitor the developments in real time.
