I haven't talked to my dad since September (I just can't bring myself to do it... ) but I'm 1,000,000 certain this is how the conversation would go.

Callie, my sister, is that accurate? How's dad?!

Oh, I empathize. I'm right there with you ladies. Due to the recent family events I've mentioned lately, I am speaking to my dad again, but not a word about politics; if politics were brought up it would be this exact scenario.

Obsessing about the amount of his "fans" - gee, where have we seen this before? "Please tell me you love me! You all REALLY LOVE ME, right? Right?!?"

Hey ding dong, that's because Obama inherited an ACTUAL mess, and began to FIX IT. (Not your "alternative facts" mess). Is the term Great Recession ringing any bells?

img_4521.png

Quite possibly. He cannot stand how much people admire, respect, and love the Obamas.

Brilliant Dee*Jay. Wish I would have thought of that. I think I'm going to email Jeff Mason (corrres. assoc. president) and suggest it.

I mean it's so pathetic, it's the ultimate "I can dish it out but I can't take it" bullshit. The big bully, hiding from the press bc he KNOWS he can't handle it. I bet our actual "enemies" are just trembling in fear at our big bad president - a man who is terrified of the press

That is just sad.

Could be worse. We could be hearing about long form birth certificates.

DeeJay, thanks for the updates! Here are all four of his most recent in one screen shot. It's the usual - petty, petulant, and flat out lies.

"When Bill Owens went to collect the body of his son at Dover Air Force Base, he found out that the president of the United States was also on his way to pay his respects as the casket of Chief Special Warfare Officer William 'Ryan' Owens was unloaded. But he told the chaplain, 'I'm sorry, I don't want to see him. I told them I don't want to meet the president.' The elder Owens, himself a military veteran, tells the Miami Herald that more than shunning President Trump, 'I want an investigation' into the death of his son, the only American casualty in a botched raid in Yemen, and the first American combat death of Trump's term. 'The government owes my son an investigation.' Owens says he's been troubled by Trump since he went after a Gold Star family while on the campaign trail.

Says a White House rep, per the AP: 'I can't imagine what this father is going through. His son is a true American hero, and we should forever be in his son's debt.' But Owens questions the very purpose of the mission:'Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn't even barely a week into his administration? Why? For two years prior, there were no boots on the ground in Yemen—everything was missiles and drones—because there was not a target worth one American life. Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?' The entire Herald article, which profiles 37-year-old Ryan Owens extensively, is worth a read."

Woah... this could be a big clvster**** for a lot of people. Certain kinds of income are treated differently in terms of taxation (combat pay for instance). Plus, if you were stationed in different states you (may/probably) have to file in those multiple jurisdictions, the rules for all of which will vary.

Just perusing a bit through this thread, and this caught my eye. As FYI, basic tax prep services on base were staffed by volunteers (usually retired military members who were tax savvy or former CPAs, etc.) for years, and that service was free to junior enlisted members & military retirees. Then they moved to 'paid' tax preparers; however, the services (just like childcare) are paid for by the people who use them ... not the government/taxpayers. The gov just facilitates the services on base, clearances, access, payroll, etc. The freeze doesn't mean military personnel won't be able to get their taxes done; they will just need to go off base like everyone else in the mean time. Unless things have changed, most mil pay is taxable like everything else, unless earned in a combat/tax-free zone, in which case it's not included in taxable income on the tax forms, so it's pretty straightforward, really. You don't need to file in multiple states; only your 'home state of record', which most keep the same as where they are originally from or their current state if the tax benefit is better. I did our taxes myself all the time, and we had bonuses in combat zones, combat pay, were from two different states, etc.

Childcare is the same, but even snopes addressed this misunderstanding by some bases that they were actually exempt, but no one corrected the record.

Once again, these stories are not what the media (or twitter) make them out to be. Taking (and sharing) tweets as 'fact' (without understanding how things work or if they're even true) is just fueling the flames of ignorance and divisiveness. And I don't mean you personally - DeeJay or Telephone; but in general. That is why I have largely stayed out of this thread. :wavey:

I did see this story; it is troubling. I've read multiple, conflicting reports about the raid and about Trump's knowledge of it, etc.

Maybe there should be an investigation. Of course the WH denies any wrongdoing- the problem here is that this WH lies. They lie all the time, over stupid, little things - things that are easily disproven. How can we believe them when it comes to anything big? No wonder the father wants it looked into.

It is certainly very sad.

The loss of any service members' life is indeed sad, and my heart goes out to the family.

The Seals don't usually go into a raid like this without some level of advanced planning, so this is noteworthy:
The ground operation, which had been planned for months, was authorized by Trump, according to U.S. officials familiar with the mission. Trump has pledged to wage a more aggressive campaign against terrorist groups.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2017/01/29/u-s-service-member-killed-in-yemen-raid-marks-first-combat-death-of-trump-administration/?utm_term=.0e73ac6fb285

It's also noted the Seal died in a firefight with militants. Nevertheless, there is always an investigation when service members die; due to classification of the mission, though, the public likely won't get all of those details, but the family/father may get some of them.
