Tungsten Carbide Rings, Opinions??

Hey everyone!

My fiance picked out this ring for his wedding band. It is Tungsten Carbide and they said it is as strong as Titanium, but won''t scratch like it. How does it hold up? Anyone have one or know someone who does? I know it is a newer thing to be making rings with it. Any downsides to it? It is made my Artcarved. It looked really sleek and very nice. Price was reasonable too, especially in comparison to Platinum which he wanted first. I can''t wait til it comes in.

just one i can think of: tungsten carbide is used in high-end cutting tools, and it's one of the strongest, hardest man-made substances around. if you get a gold ring caught on a piece of machinery or a car door, say, it will break before doing serious injury. if you get that ring caught on anything, his finger will come off long before the ring breaks.

Well my fiance isn't one of those "work with your hands" guys...he is in sales and stays on the white collar side of things. Doubt he'll have any problems. He has worn rings for years and never had any issues. So let's keep hoping it stays that way!

Nice ring! It's hard to find nice yet not overly ordinary rings for men - this one does the trick I should say!

The other very important thing to consider is that a ring like this can not be sized, or cut off in an emergancy, remember, no one ever sets an apointment to have a problem no matter who you are. Nor do we always expect to change in size and shape as we age.
There are alot of (exotic/trinket/Fad) alloys out there, and yes, some of them are really cool, fun and new. However, I have had more than one customer come to me to revert back to a traditional precious metal ring after a few months or years of wear. Just some things to take into consideration.

Well, I do understand it can't be sized, and hard to cut off, etc, etc. Chances are, he won't need to, since we are ordering in his size, and he isn't a guy who is known to fluxuate in weight at all. (Let's hope it stays that way)

But worse comes to worse, he HAS to get it cut off for some emergency - the last thing I am going to worry about is losing a ring...we can always order a new one - it's his safety and health that is more important. And I am not going to worry about that now. If it happens it happens, and we'll get through it - I just want to make sure it is not going to turn his finger green or lose it's luster fast or something, that's all!

While they can't be cut off, they can be broken off.

Exactly what i was thinking - TC is very hard but very brittle.

Pop it on an anvil and whacko with a hammero and hey presto - many pices for ring and one whole finger.

It should be very safe because I suspect it would only need a sharp but firm blow.

Which brings up the idea that it could break under normal wear and tear?

But it is a great idea for a mans ring - one that will only scratch on rubies sapphires and diamonds

I have WC ring. It's pretty cool, indeed doesn't scratch. Seems to hold up to all kinds of stuff. I got mine sized not too tight, so getting it off is not an issue. Hope this helps.
