Hi, I am new here, and am looking to buy a diamond.
I am just a little confused and not sure what spec i should choose.

My budget is $16K to $17K, Round Brilliant.
I don''t know if I should go for a bigger stone and sacrifice on the color and clarity.

So, it''s beteen 1.5 or 1.75 or even bigger.
Originally, I''m choosinb between 1.5 F VS2 Excellent Cut
or 1.75 G SI1 Excellent with some floru

but after reading some of other postings that, it seems like as long as the cut is excellent, I should feel at ease to have a larger stone with lower color and clarity, such as G, SI1

Can anyone help me out here? I would have to admit that I am somewhat shallow, when i came across PS before, the perception i had about diamond rings are the larger the better (feeling ashamed.

) So, as long as from any angle, without any aid, no one can see the inclusions or the stone appears as white as colorless, i think i probably will be okay about that. I know VS1 for sure without 10X you can''t see inclusions, so that''s what i feel most comfortable with. But within my budget, if I would have to go for VS1, then I could probably only get G for bigger than 1.5 or 1.5 but with a better color...

Can anyone help me choose? I''ve only been to a B&M store twice, so i really don''t know if there''s big difference between G and F? If there isn''t a big difference, does it mean as long as i choose a stone with excellent cut, I do not need to worry about G is not "colorless"?

Also, I''m thinkng about going with Blue Nile. The only fallback is that they don''t have trade-up program. I wouldn''t have so much problem with it if i end up buying a 2carat stone. If i go for a smaller stone, i am not sure if in the future I would want to upgrade it. Can anyone also tell me if it''s hard to sell a diamond if I ever want to upgrade it?

Thank you guys so much for your help in advance!

Hi snoopy,

You have read correctly. If you go with an excellent cut, you can definitely go down in color, and clarity as long as it's eyeclean. G is at the top of the near colorless range, and is safe at almost any size. H can be just fine too, with a great cut. There's so little difference between the two. I is where the industry feels some people might begin to see a hint of warmth. So I really feel going to H would be fine.

I would really recommend going with a company that has an upgrade policy. Then if you change your mind and want bigger, you will get the full price towards the next stone. Selling on your own, you'd be really lucky to get 50%, most likely about 30%. I just don't see the need for BN (and losing money) when you have other options.

I took a quick look around, but couldn't find much in the F,G SI1 range in larger sizes. Sometimes inventories run low, and the bigger you go, the less there are. But you can always ask one of the vendors to find what you're looking for, they have access to many diamonds not listed.

Here's an example of a really well cut stone in an H. This would be a beauty. Bankwire price is 17,179.00

Helllo Snoopy,

I hope you don''t mind but I took your budget for a drive; just to see how she would handle on the corners....

I wanted colourless as a mind clean issue, but now I wonder how much bigger my ring would look if I had been more openminded. There is a thread on beautiful lower coloured stones, take a look.

This is from Whiteflash, it is a 2.24 J SI1 with MB Flour. Expert Selection (Not ACA) $16,300 and change with the wire. Looks like an all rounder?

Snoopy, I will park her back up now, but it sure was fun to go shopping with that kind of budget. I hope you enjoy it too.

Hi!

Thanks for all the response...sorry I am a newbie, that''s why I have posted the thread twice. Please continue posting on this one!
I have to spend some time to go over all your postings :) but thanks all for quick response!

Snoopy

So, from all the responses, I get the impression that with excellent cut, I should feel at ease to go with G or even I with SI1 Clarity. And i think with that spec, i could probably get a pretty big stone, might even be able to afford for over 2 Carat (wow!) but i think Laurel''s suggestion is pretty good. i should go to compare diamond color in person to figure out if I am very sensitive to it.

Thank you all!
