Carolina is a Trump state. Seeing the mindset in action made me ill and I couldn't wait to get out of there. The people I met hate Obama with a vengeance. One woman told me she "couldn't even stand to see him on TV, could't look at him." When I asked her if it was because he was Black, she just said "call me a racist if you want to." So I did.
I thought I had adequately prepared for the visit. I expected to encounter several modes of thought that differ markedly from mine. I think it was the insidious subtlety of the racism in the groups I was meeting with that so disturbed me. These were highly educated successful very wealthy people who are prominent in their communities and they were masters at the polite dig. And their blatant sense of superiority was galling. At least with overt racism, it doesn't appear so hypocritical to me -- you put it all out there and take the consequences. But that constant undercurrent, mockery, and condescension was a challenge for me. And yes, it goes generations deep. I was hoping that the young members of these families would be different but when you still live on a plantation with a confederate flag flying up the pole....ksinger|1475608507|4083624 said:South Carolina has always been the absolute worst in the racism category
