I am in the process of purchasing a .87 F VS1 Princess with measurements 5.35x5.19. After some sneaky prying I got the impression that my gf doesn''t really have a preference on the shape of the diamond. What is most important is that she gets the setting that she fell in love with, which happened to have a princess cut diamond mounted on it when we saw it. So, I figured I could pay about the same amount (2800-2900) for a well cut rb with h&a. I realize that I will be coming down 2 color grades and 2 clarity grades, but I will be getting a much larger looking diamond, in terms of spread. Also, will H color face up whiter? I heard somewhere that with a well cut h&a you tend to face up at least one color grade higher. I included portions of the ags report and wanted to ask if my fellow ps members would take a look at the inclusion plots and tell me whether they think that this si1 is eye clean. Basically, I want to know if you guys think that it would be wise for me to do away with the princess and go for the round. Will I see that much of a differenc in color and clarity between the two? Please help....I am being consumed by this search...ahhhh

Hiya A - First of all, before you go through all this upheaval and risk losing a stone you like - a few things to think about:

1) THe setting is very important to her (I agree) - will that setting acommodate a round?

2) If you go with round thereby getting a higher ct weight, is the setting available to hold the bigger stone? Presumably yes - just be sure to check.

3) Part of what she liked about the setting when she saw it was the overall look which had a square sotne in it. It is possible that she likes that setting becuase it is for that shape stone! So, indirectly, she may have a shape preference.

Perhaps the setting looks equally good with both shapes - so be sure to think about what size stone she would be comfortable with. Depending on her size a little (e.g. size 4 ring with a 1.5ct stone looks different than a size 8 finger with same ct) and her personality alot - she may be more comfortable with a certain size - only you can determine that!

Is the RB size you are considering a lot larger?

Is she a size or quality type of gal? Personally, I am a square fan with a quality preference over size and I do not generally like "honkers". So, I just wanted to point out the things that would go through my mind if I had picked out the ring she liked.

Lastly, keep in mind that not everything she seems to like means that is what she really wants - see if she picks that style setting, shape stone, etc. consistently. Can you do that without ruining it too much?

Is it all that important? The Princess sounds fine and a safer bet. Is the princess a close match to the one in the respective ring ? If so, why complicate things...

There are most likely 1000 more choices around the corner and all is needed is one diamond.

By now I am seriously curious about the ring

if you go to www.adidiamonds.com you will see on their openeing page three similar rings, with three different stones (i think theres a round, square, and marquise). So yes, this setting will accomodate a round. The ring is really thin, 2mm wide. Also, apart from the diamonds going all the way around the ring, there are also diamonds going around the shank. The total carat weight of the ring is about .40 ct. Secondly, my gf thought that the stone in the original ring we saw was round, probably because it had close to a 1:1 lw ratio. With that said, I think she will like either a round or princess. The whole reason I started second guessing my original choice was because I read the thread on avg. diamond size and also the one about the woman who felt that her husband did't spend enough on her ring given that he made over 200k/year. I want to make sure my gf has a stone that looks large and also is well cut with excellent optics. I know that she would be happy with a .25 ct stone, but I want to get her the biggest and best looking center stone that I can afford (no more than 3000 and the setting will be an additional 1200)

I love princess stones!

Was the setting fancy schmancy and intricate? Or was it plain? If it was plain, maybe she does like the square look....If it's an intricate setting that could work with a round, you have something to think about. People either love princess stones or they don't. I'd also prefer the F over the H!

nice. I should have read your post. duh.

Also, remember that if you have a princess with a good depth, that helps. Also, it might not have the same mm measurments as a round of the same carat weight, but it's got pointy corners- Picture a round and a princess with the same diameter...the round fits inside the princess which has the corners pointing out!

yes, but these two don't have anywhere near the same diamater, the .78 round is 6.0x6.02 while the .87 princes is 5.35x5.19.

Dude, I was in the same boat... driving myself nuts over millimeters. The difference between your two stones are:

.78 6.00x6.02
.87 5.35x5.19
-----------------------------
.09 0.65x0.83

Draw it out on a piece of paper. It's not that much of a difference. And heed what MORE said about the corners... they can be deceiving.

Take a look at the diagonal measurement of the princess:

A squared + B squared = C squared

7.45mm = C or the diagonal measurement from corner to opposite corner (like a TV)

Hope that helps. I feel for you... I was having the same problem.

thanks for that info vertical....just curious, what did you end up with?
