I''m on the road this weekend; and thought I''d ask if anyone else is experiencing something that I first noticed a few years ago.

That at certain hotels you now have to climb into bed (literally).

Years ago mattresses were about 6" thick, so were box springs. In the last decade "luxury" mattresses and box springs have grown... and if my current hotel mattress is anything less than 15" thick....

These replacement mattress and box springs are being placed on the original bed frames.

So we have a situation where the current bed hight is actually higher than the desktop I am working from (and he bed is higher than the nightstand as well).

You cannot just sit down on the bed - its too high. If I jump up and sit on the bed my feet do not reach the floor (close to a foot gap).

You literarily have to climb into bed. In the morning - or middle of the night - you have to remember to slide down to the floor (and would not think of just rolling out).

I have a fiend who cannot even stay at this hotel (Red Lion) as his wife cannot get into the beds.

I also travel with a CPAP - and the normal hose from the machine is too short to allow setting the CPAP on the floor. So I have it on the luggage stand instead.

Anyone eles experience the incredible taller beds - and what do you think of the trend.

Slight threadjack here...

I also use a CPAP.
To those who don''t know it is an air pump and a mask you wear over your mouth and or nose while sleeping.
It keeps the airways open for people with sleep apnea.

I''d never put it on the floor where it will suck in more dust.
Sure there''s a filter but why not pump cleaner air into your lungs from up on the night stand?

I get a running start and jump off my springboard . . . kind of like a gymnast. I''m trying to perfect the backflip dismount when getting out of bed.

My FI has a CPAP. He keeps the machine on the nightstand and hangs the hose over the headboard so the mask hangs over the bed.

Mary Poppins:

I''d expected you to use your umbrella to glide up into and out of bed....

Kenny:

I have a humidifier with a fold out platform. That keeps the air inlet from the floor dust.

To both: I''ve learned to route the hose several different ways depending on whats available. I rarely have a backboard to route it over (especially in a hotel room situation).

I''ve been on CPAP for over a decade - I''m an old hand at traveling with it.

All, have a great day.

I LOVE high beds.. unfourtunately we have an ikea platform set that almost could not be closer to the floor.. Someday I will have a big tall luxurious bed!

I don''t love this trend. And talk about buying new beds for our other two houses, the dogs love to jump into bed. Now they need a step ladder, and will have no part of it. So it''s lifting them up and picking them up to get down. PITA.

We bought a new king sized bed last month because DH was having surgery.
We love it, but were not prepared for how tall the new mattress would make the bed. It is very hard to get into. Once you are up there, it is heavenly. Plus, one thing really led to another. The bedside tables were way too low, but I was able to order something called 'table risers' on Amazon. Then, the lamps were too short, and we had to get a new set of tall lamps. There is no more just coming in and sitting down on the bed. I really think we will have to get some steps in a few years. Perhaps that's why the photos show benches at the end of these beds. Maybe you are supposed to first sit on the bench and then hoist yourself on up into bed. It doesn't look that high in the picture, does it? Well, they must photoshop the pictures. I am 5'7" and my husband is 6'.

I just got back from a trip to Savannah, Georgia with my teenage daughter. I did not notice that the beds were any higher, but I am a very unobservant person when it comes to the physical world. Sometimes it strikes me how often others around me notice physical things that I fail to notice. On the other hand, I often notice personal interactions or connections between ideas that other people fail to notice. (What were we talking about?)

My mattress that I bought three years ago is seventeen inches thick. And I love it! I''ve always loved jumping up into bed. But everyone I know has always had tall beds. Maybe it''s a southern thing?

Being five feel tall (on a good day) I definitely do NOT love this climbing into bed thing! There is a B&B I stayed at where I had to have a helping hand to get hauled onto the bed when the time came. Tres sexy!

NOT!

About mattresses; my last one was a double pillow top (had it on both sides) and even the super deep pocket sheets wouldn''t fit. I had a platform bed so it was OK becuase I didn''t use a box spring. Well I got a new mattress (and also a new bed, although it was the same as the old bed, just king instead of queen) and the new mattress is foam. It''s only 10" deep and at first it seemed odd to be to be so "low", but I have adjusted!

I love our super thick mattress/tall bed

It seems like in the old days all the beds were high off the floor. I remember visiting my grandparents all the beds you had to climb up to get into them they were so high up. An antique cast iron bed we inherited, when we had it set up in our daughter''s room, again our feet would dangle off the side. Comfortable bed otherwise. It made me wonder if in the old days they didn''t use box springs or maybe liked to store alot of stuff under the beds.

I like to have beds in the middle, where when you swing yourself to the side, can have your feet on the floor. Not too low you feel you are crawling out of bed.
If I ever bought one of those super luxury mattresses I would get a bed/bed frame that didn''t require a box spring and just use the mattress.

I haven''t noticed, but they''re not any higher than my bed at home so why would I notice? Most mattresses have grown to be deeper so subsequently your bed is higher over the past several years.

This is something that does not bother me at all.

That''s good to know some people aren''t bothered by a high bed. We mull over the idea of selling the antique bed since no one is using it and it''s chained on our front porch, but then think maybe one of our kids would like it when they got older, so we do nothing. It is a shame it''s not being used. If we had a spare bedroom we''d set it up there.

I like the taller beds.

I''m a shorty (5''4") and our bed is very high. I LOVE IT!!! It did take some getting used to, but I really like being high up for some reason . . . probably BECAUSE I''m a shorty and I NEVER get to be high up! LOL!

I climb in from the bottom, using the footboard as a step.
