I just saw a ring with a radiant center and traps for side stones. I''ve never seen trap diamonds before and they look amazing beside a radiant. Are these diamonds expensive?

I am looking to buy a 1.2-1.25 center radiant diamond. What size traps do you think would compliment the center? Also, will the band be more expensive due to the unusual shape of the traps? Thanks.

Traps are not that unusual. I can''t say if the setting will be more or less expensive than for other types of sides because I do not know what price you have in mind for benchmark.

Traps are rather large for the weight, so you will not need havy ones. Perhaps 50 - 60 points of them combined would work. There are lots of examples on Diamondsbylauren.com (look at their page on sidestones). Both step cut and brilliant cut traps exist and these guys use both to make some really nice rings (IMO).

Hope this helps

I love traps and think they would look great with a radiant. If you look for smaller ones they shouldn''t be too expensive. Valeria is right www.diamondsbylauren.com cuts some very pretty traps. Good luck!!

i love traps as well and have double traps flanking my stone--sorry i am terrible at computer stuff or i would show you a picture. a word of caution about them--alot of the traps are very thin (i believe a common term for the thin ones is shardy--meaning like a shard of glass). make sure they have decent depth to them or they look like glass and have no brilliance, especially when dirty.

i agree with Ana --.6 total is probably the maximum you would want to go and you can check www.adascodesigns.com for prices and pictures.

Signedpieces has a couple of interesting examples:

A one carat radiant with interesting sidestones 0.3cts total...

And a 1.5 cts radiant with 0.6cts sides (thse are small radiants - so your traps will be a bit larger for the same weight)

A 2 carat square looks like this with 0.4cts sides (step cut sides)

1.3 carat center with (relatively large) 0.8tcw sides has a three-stone ring look already:

IMO, half a carat total traps would look great next to a 1 - 1.5 cts radiant. How well they fit with the centerstone remains the task of the maker of the ring.

i think if they are too big they can look airplane-ish.............

Thats the nicest mose trap I''ve seen.

Are there any online site where they have prices for the trapezoids? I looked on the links above and they didn''t have prices. Thanks.

Hi jls,

Try Americanfancies.com this LINK will take you directly to the "pair" of diamonds page where there are a number of different side stones listed. They have step cut traps and brilliant cut traps, just click on one of them and sizes and prices come up. Good luck!

Thanks Icelady, thats a great site.

Do you guys/gals think that the step trap or brilliant trap will look better as a side stone with a radiant center? Just trying to get some ideas. Thanks.

Brilliant traps would look best with a radiant; the step cut ones would look best with an emerald cut.

i would say brilliant with a radiant.....sparkle sparkle sparkle

I think it's a personal preference depending on what kind of look you want to achieve. If you want a contrast to the radiant then I would say step cut. If you want a similar look of the radiant then it would be the brilliant traps. Personally I would pick brilliant traps, but thats just me.

Thanks. The reason I ask is because my gf wants tappered baggets (she has never seen the trapezoid cut) as side stones. The baggetts she was looking at has the cut glass appearance and I figured that it was more similar to the trap step stones. I guess I will have to look at them in person.

Do you think the step traps will give a more elegant look (like tappered baggetts) than the brilliant cut? The platinum band will have a very clean and simple look.

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for thinking of us!!!

Here's some things I keep in mind:
I never consider what the side stones weigh- rather I consider the profile in relation to the center diamond. You'll probably end up with .45-.60 total.
If a side stone is too shallow, it lacks sparkle- but you'll get a much larger looking stone.
If the center is 1-1.25cts, that is the smallest stone I would flank with traps- and only if it's rectangular. For square radiant cuts, I'd say 1.50 is the minimum.

The reason is that you can't use prongs any smaller than a normal sized ring. Therefore small side stones ( trilliants, trapezoids, Half Moons) get obscured by the prongwork.
Baguettes are the exception. A small center works with baguettes- this way there's only 2 prongs holding the side diamond. Actually they are not even prongs- they are bars which work well from a design standpoint.
I agree that baguettes look glittery, in contrast to a brilliant faceted center, such as a Radiant Cut. Then the center has a lot more sparkle than the sides.
We suggest a double baguette ring- two tapered baguettes set beside each other- for brilliant faceted 1.00-1.50 centers-
So baguette rings save folks a lot of money because you can use less total weight to accent your center. Commercially available semi mounts also make baguettes a more affordable alternative.

As far as a ring with other side stones- I feel like you have to custom make a trapezoid ring. This is not brain surgery, but neither is it a simple matter.
For example, the height of each stone in relation to the others is crucial

I am planning on buying a rectangular radiant (1.2-1.30:1) so I think I will be ok with the traps.

Roughly, how much more expensive do you think it will cost me for a platinum setting if I go with the traps instead of baggetts?

Hi,
I can''t speak for other sellers- but in our company, a baguette semi mount with about .35tw in baguettes would cost $995 in 14kt white gold.
If the buyer wanted a custom made platinum trapazoid ring that amount would likely be $3000

WOW!! That''s a really big difference. So do all platinum rings have to be custom if I want trap side stones? Thanks for the help.

Well, prices will vary from place to place, but I have yet to see ready-to-wear settings with traps. There are such things with baguettes, and mass production cuts costs, of course.
