I am currently in the process of making a right hand three stone ring for myself. I have diamond earrings (that I don''t wear) that are about the right size to be the side stones that I''m looking for but I''m not at all sure how the cut/clarity/color of them are. Is there someone I could have make my ring who would take these stones to offset the cost of new diamond side stones for my ring? Does Brian Gavin do this? Anyone else you''re aware of? Thanks for any info.

Megan, rarely will anyone take earring stones toward another project unless they were bought as certified stones from a vendor with a trade-in policy. For example, my studs are ideal cut from WhiteFlash, and either WF or Brian Gavin will take them as trades toward another stone. And most uncertified earring stones would not be the quality I''d want to have in a ring, so I''d say to just enjoy your earrings and start over with the ring. Good luck!

Oh, I believe that they are certified and are definitely not bad in terms of quality. Maybe in the G or H range for color and a decent cut. They were a gift years ago so I'm not entirely sure. Thanks for the feedback though. I truly never wear them so I would love to use them for something or get something for them...just wondering if that was at all possible. I know what I want is going to be pricey either way.

The main problem is, if they aren''t traded in to the same vendor who credits you with the full purchase price, you are not likely to get more than half of what they originally cost if you try to trade them in or sell them. But if you can locate their GIA or AGS grading certificates, there is a chance someone might take them if they are ideal cut. I think James Allen will sometimes take certified well cut stones as a trade-in.

Megan, aren''t you trying to re-use your earring stones in your new ring rather than sell them? I don''t see why it should be a problem, as long as you''re happy with the quality of the stones and you can convince the ring maker they are worthy of their name stamp when used in the ring. I know for sure that Leon will work with your stones; I''m pretty sure I saw some recycle projects with Brian Gavin too. If all that fails, I believe most Etsy sellers would be happy to work with you! Good luck on your project :)

If you are a realist and wish to sell diamonds that YOU choose to no longer own, then there are buyers who pay what you what they are worth in the market. Now, many people will say that you won''t get enough or that you will take a large loss. This is likely true, but that loss exists regardless if you choose to sell or to keep them. Diamonds have a retained value which is far less than full retail. Don''t kid yourself. I own stocks at are not worth what I paid and I can choose to sell or hold them. You can do the same for diamonds. When I sold the remaining inventory of jewelry I owned, I got less than my wholesale cost. I exspected exactly that so imade me less concerned. It is market reality, not anything more evil at work.

A large partf the VALUE of diamonds is how you feel when you wear them. Once you decide to not wear them, they have far less value to you. If you want the current value in the market, then shop them around and sell them for the best competitive price you can obtain. If not, then try to trade them or put them away in a safe place for a later decision. Nothing you do will change their VALUE and there is no reason to worry over it.
