My 40th birthday is next may and I''m thinking of getting myself an emerald. The weird thing is that I want a flawed emerald. A big flawed emerald that isn''t very expensive but has an interesting look to it that I can appreciate much like the flaws in granite. But I don''t want it to be super weak either.

Am I nuts? (don''t answer that lol)

you are not too nuts....just enough to be interesting! I own a few stones because I like them for their flaws! As long as you appreciate the stone''s beauty thats all that matters!

YOu''re not nuts! If you want a ''flawed'' emerald, go for it!
I don''t know about how flaws effect the integrity, but I''m sure others will chime in. You could always set it into a pendant, rather than a ring.

What kind of flaws? Like copper? Does that happen? ''Cause that''d look NICE! Esp in rose gold!

Would you think I was nuts if I said I was considering putting the emerald in the ring I had made a couple years ago? I have decided the ring needs to stay the way it is but it has the wrong stone in it. My husband and I both share May birthstone and with the rubies already in the ring it would make the perfect family ring. But my diamond is not thriving in the setting unfortunately. Being a leaky clunky chunky old mine brilliant it really would love to soak up the sun coming from every direction, not just top.

So.......... thinking... :D

I have no idea what kind of flaws... I wonder if some would make the stone stronger... not out of the range of possibility maybe - or maybe not lol But yeah the integrity would be a big issue for me. I know they are not tough stones to begin with.

So, what do you think - think a big flawed green emerald would look good in there? I''m pretty flawed, I think it would be more appropriate than a small perfect one lol

I love emeralds that seem to have a garden of vines growing through them.

That''s what I was thinking, upgradable :)

I think "flaws" can make a gem more interesting. Sometimes I think that our "flaws" make us more interesting...

Yes, I think you''re nuts. But I also think that setting never did your stone justice, so I am all for a reno project.

Some nice options at GemSelect

The first two you linked were really nice - too nice!

I like a few here... this one the flaws don''t even try to hide:

This one is nice too...

I really really like this one but it is way too small, my current stone is ~9.5x7.5

Ooh I really like this one! It''s too big and the cut is wrong for the ring... wonder if I could have it custom cut to fit the ring?

I need to find out just how fragile those flaws make the already fragile emerald.

Ha well, it is what it is.

I have always liked your stone. It should be the star of the show and that setting didn''t let it . Just too much going on. Chances are that it may be the same for the Emerald but it may just also look really cool and funky.

Go simple and classic for the cushion''s next setting, will ya?

I am with ya for the most part - I really have no set idea in my head of how a ring should go except that the stone needs light. I bought a stone that was a sculpture for a reason and then ignored that - or at least misinterpreted what it needed. I have thought since day 1 that the ring I have would really be cool with something colored in it - I just recently started thinking an emerald would kinda fulfill the whole family ring thing and give me something I''ve always wanted.

How about this one?
good eye! That''s a nice one - good size too :) I like this site - lots of emeralds!

My fav so far is the one with dark spots in it... it''s way too small but it''s very interesting lol

do we have any resident photoshoppers who can turn my stone green? lol

Upgradable - I really love that site you posted, I am thinking about buying a citrine just for the hell of it lol (not for the ring) I just love that color and they''re dirt cheap!!!! I could use a silver pendant until I get my next diamond in like... well... it''ll be a while

Sara - I personally like the idea a lot. I think it''ll look very antique in design. Make sure to post pics when you finish it.

Sounds good as long as the emerald is durable! FWIW, I have emerald earrings that aren''t perfect clarity and I am happy with them. Not sure what their clarity is, but as earrings I feel safe that they won''t crack or chip.

Not crazy, but they MUST be interesting inclusions... not quite sure what defines it, but you''ll know it when you see it!

I''d consider a rectangular stone. Perhaps step cut. There''s something *strong* and bold & modern about that setting that I agree with TG, never quite worked for me w/the antique-styled cushion.

This is totally off the wall -- but what about Onyx?
