Too much space around center stone?

My husband had my .56TCW oval stone reset into this bead set semi-mount for Christmas. I love this setting and the matching wedding band it came with, but I''m a little unhappy with the amount of space between where the side stones end and the center stone. I''m wondering if there is any way (and if so how difficult it would be) to have a jeweler add some more white gold to the ends of the band to make it flow under the stone without touching the prongs. My husband spent just about every penny he had saved to get this done for me, so I don''t have a lot more money to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

Would you be happy with an east-west set stone?

Excellent idea! And I think it would be lovely with that setting.

EDIT - perhaps a different type of head (something with more of a basket) could be on the shank. Not sure
if this would solve the problem though.

Edit again - maybe a 6 prong setting would help hide the space on the side.

Here is a link to suller heads for oval.

Very pretty ring and I like all the suggestions Sizzle and TyTy333 made as well. I have an EW ring and like it a lot.

Great idea Sizzle!!! I think that oval would look phenomal set EW!! Keep us posted on what you decide.

Thanks for your suggestions. I had actually considered the EW setting for about six months, but the width of my oval is about the same width of the shank on the band, so it made the center diamond disappear when they sat it in there like that for me to see before actually setting it. My husband also preferred the tradiitonal North-South. After seeing it that way for 12 years I also liked it more that way too. I also just went from the 6 prong to a 4 prong because the 6 prong made the stone appear to be a marquise. I''m wondering if a jeweler could just add a bit more gold to taper the shank just under my head.

Best person to ask is your jeweller

Ditto. But I also think a different head that sits the diamond lower would get rid of some of the gap.

if the diamond basket was lower and a bit wider --by being more of a U than a V--that space would disappear

Nope, a jeweler could not do that - and it wouldn''t change the effect you''re talking about by that much anyway, I don''t think: it''s not the space itself that''s jarring, it''s the visual change from the row of diamonds. I''d say having the stone set lower would solve your problem, and with that design, I quite like the idea of a bezel that sits directly atop the ends ....

I think your set is beautiful!!

The jeweler can take the metal spacing away between the shoulders and the prongs and add the same amount into the bottom of the ring, just like sizing the ring larger. This would make it closer at the top and retain the same finger size. No problem at all to do this.

Okay, one more question for you jeweler craftsmen out there. Is it possible to file the outter edges of the shank down so the shoulders aren''t so thick to make it a more narrow band like the wedding band? I''m a little OCD and would like the bands to be more identical and sit a little lower down on my finger. I''m totally not used to this thick of a set. I was hoping for closer to 5mm instead of 6mm.

You could make the engagement ring thinner by doing it over and using smaller side diamonds and a narrower shank. You could do it over with the same size side diamonds, but not set in beads which require an outer wall on both sides. It could hold the diamonds in fishtail, shared prongs, or some other open sided style which would be thinner. Of course, this would not match the wedding ring style. Maybe stressing over it is not productive since it really looks nice. You definitely can reduce the open sides as I had previously suggested with a reasonable cost although it won't be free.

HERE WE GO! So, after all of the feedback you wonderful folks gave me and scratching myself and my 2 year old with my prongs over the past three months, I finally decided to have my center stone reset- again. I found a jeweler I was confident and comfortable with. I am SO happy with the results.

The thin four prong peg head was changed out for a stuller 4 prong basic baset head (no wire). To keep the rings flush, part of the back of the basket was shaved a little. The bridge was removed and the basket was soldered to the shank on both sides and to the wedding band in back. I had already had the two rings soldered together to keep them from spinning and not lining up right. The difference seems like night and day to me. I finally have the ring I invisioned all along. Thanks for everyone''s input!
