Too much metal pave??

Hi everyone! Thanks to all of you I am now almost certain about what I want in a ring, but I still have some questions so please bear with me!

I have been looking at pave bands and they all seem the same to me, but I notice a lot of PSers DO see a huge difference, mostly commenting about "too much metal". I have no idea what that looks like! Do you mean from the side angles? Can someone please please please educate me in this? Maybe post a pic to show the difference?

A pave setting should look like it is literally paved with diamonds. For example, on the back splash in your kitchen, there should be just enough grout to hold in the tiles, essentially the grout should fade into the background and let the tiles be the centerpiece. However if you have too much grout, that's all you're going to see. It's the same with pave rings. If there is too much metal holding in each stone, that's all your eye will see. And of course as Kenny says, people vary, so this effect may not be as obvious to you if you don't see these settings day in and day out for years like some of the longtime PSers have. HTH!

Thanks Megan, so basically you mean from the top view?

Wouldn't less metal result in the diamonds to fall out easier though?

It just means that you see a more metal surrounding the diamonds. Sometimes it's larger/more noticeable prongs etc. There are a few designers here that are considered pave masters due to their ability to produce a structurally sound ring while showing very little metal. Frankie does a comparison of some of the best pave guys we know of here..
