Too Much for a 1 Carat Oval Diamond?

We have been looking at rings and have decided to go the custom route. My boyfriend picked a 1 carat G SI1 GIA certified oval diamond with minimal bow tie. They have quoted him $7,800 for this diamond. From my research online I cannot find any 1 carat oval diamonds with these specifications that costs this much money. I have called and talked to the store but they just tell me you cannot buy an oval diamond online or from a piece of paper you have to see it and they assure me it's priced right. If the color or clarity was above G or SI1 I could see why the diamond cost this much but I still believe we are paying way too much for this diamond. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I am in no way shape or form an expert but that seems ridiculous. Agreed that you need to see these types of stones in person, but even doing a quick search on james allen where you can see the diamonds, there are a few with no/little bow tie in similar specs or better for much less.

This is one that was pleasing to my eye (I have no idea how this would ASET out or any of that other stuff but it has no big bow tie and nice facets, with just a tiny cloud to one corner) and is 4500!!

Good luck!

Yes. that is way too much.

You are better off shopping elsewhere.

do you have the GIA lab report number? If you do you can do a google search for that number by typing in "GIA XXXXXXXXXXXX" whatever the numbers are and see if it is being sold anywhere else, and for how much.

You can call and ask them for the lab report number.

Thank you for replying! That diamond is gorgeous. If I wanted an ASET do I just contact JA and ask for one? I am all for ordering a diamond online but the jewelry store had already given us the renderings for the custom setting. We have not approved them or told them to go ahead with making the ring but my boyfriend has already paid for half of the ring. I just don't know if they would allow us to buy our own diamond but still make the setting or if we could get out if the whole thing all together.

Thanks for the reply Gypsy! I do not have the GIA number, but I am glad to know I am not the only one who thinks this diamond is over priced. I understand there are a lot of things that go into pricing a diamond other than color, clarity, and size but I don't want him spending more money than he should.

I believe you can message them and ask JA to put it on hold, then request an ASET. I believe you get up to 3 free.

Did he pay for half the diamond, or half the setting? There should be no reason why you can't just get the setting from them if you want, but if you don't want to get the stone from them (and at that price, you shouldn't) you need to tell them ASAP so you don't get stuck with them saying they don't refund custom orders or something...

He paid for half of everything. I did contact them and tell them I had been researching and I could not find any diamond with those specs that cost that much. I told them it seemed like we could get a good 1 ct diamond for $5-6,000, but they told me that they would get things in for me in that price range but it would be of lower quality. If we just got the setting from them do you think they would mount the diamond? I have read on here that a lot of times jewelry stores will not set a diamond bought online. I would call and ask the store these questions but I do not want to make them mad since they do have about $2000 over what the setting cost from us.

I concur with all the other posters. I have a G one carat oval and this seems high to me. I wouldn't pay this much. Good Luck with your diamond search.

The only way to know is to call them immediately, and be extremely firm that you have found many other stones in the lower price point and be clear that you are not comfortable with their responses thus far. Also, get the paperwork out and review it- what does the receipt say? Don't let them intimidate you, this is not the difference of a few hundred dollars it is literally over 3K, and that is a HUGE amount!

I got the ASET image for the diamond you suggested. What do y'all think? Should it have more red than green?

That is a question for Gypsy =)

Not with ovals. You wont get an oval with a ton of red. Its a very nice stone. I'd get it and take it in to them and compare side by side.
JA has a 30 day return policy and they pay shipping both ways.
And the reason they said other stones they would get for you would be duds is because they would make sure of it...they would get you poor ovals so they can say...see the overpriced oval is worth it. You have to over pay to get this nice a stone.Shady.

What is this setting you are getting?

Gypsy are there any others you would recommend getting ASETs of? I'm worried about this stone being an H color. If he does want to spend $7,800 what size oval do you think I could get for that without compromising on quality (I would prefer SI1 and G color or above)? He would rather save $2,000 but will spend that if I really want something bigger.

For the setting we are getting a double halo with a diamond band in platinum. I was fine with white gold but platinum wasn't that much more.

Piping in on color only, the difference between a G and H is going to be minimal unless one is a very high G and one is a very low H. For a one carat, there are a few options similar to the one I posted above but that was more an example of the fact that there are beautiful stones around a carat that are substantially less than 7800.

That said, if he wants to go up that high you could probably get a 1.20-1.25...

ooh I love the fatter shape of that second JA option!

Thank y'all all for the advice. After calling the store they have taken $1,000 off the diamond and given me a $500 credit for a band. This still seems a little high to me for the diamond. We are ok with paying a little more to shop local and be able to take the ring into the store to have it worked on. I think I still might order one of the diamonds Gypsy recommended. I really like the first one!
