Hello, a newbie to diamonds here. I was looking in a local jewerly shop in NYC (one of the boroughs, not Manhattan) and I saw a ring that looked to be about .75 carats and had a price tag of $600. Is it me or is that way too low? I like many of the settings that the store has to offer, but I don''t want a low quality stone. Am I better off just going to the diamond district in NYC? Would the prices be similar to those online at say bluenile? Also, how do you keep from getting ripped off? I would appreciate any help. My finance can afford to spend about $3000 for stone and setting.

Are you sure it''s not a CZ? Any .75 diamond that is $600 is bound to be poor quality. Do you know any specs on the stone? Cut, color, clarity? Is it certified? If you don''t know any of these specs I would just keep walking. There''s no way that diamond is worth a second look.

I would strongly suggest making an appointment and visiting Good Old Gold on Long Island. They carry top quality diamonds but sell them at internet prices. There are many satisfied customers on this forum including me!

Good Old Gold on Long Island is great as is Mark at Engagement Rings Direct (He is in the DD, but you need to call and make an appt). Both are fabulous vendors with great prices.

You keep from getting ripped off by educating yourself. And you''ve come to the right place!

You''re lucky if GOG is close by. That''d be a great place to start your search.
