Okay, long time lurker here about to pull the trigger on an e-ring for my girlfriend. Just want to get a gut check from someone who knows better than me about this stuff . . .

I''m looking at the following stone -- here''s the GIA report:

Report Type: GIA Diamond Grading Report
Round Brilliant
Measurements: 6.70 - 6.74 x 4.17 mm
Carat Weight: 1.13
Color Grade: H
Clarity Grade: SI2
Cut Grade: Excellent

Proportions:

Depth: 62.1 %
Table: 53 %
Crown Angle: 31.5°
Crown Height: 14.5 %
Pavilion Angle: 41.4°
Pavilion Depth: 44 %
Star length: 55 %
Lower Half: 80 %
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted
Culet: None

Finish:

Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: Strong Blue

Comments: Pinpoints are not shown.

I just bought it online (with a 30 day return guarantee) for $3,768. I haven''t seen another 1+ Ct., Excellent Cut diamond for nearly this cheap in all my time searching online. It makes my gut think there must be something wrong. Does anyone have an idea why this diamond would be so much cheaper than others with similar grading?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My guess would be the strong blue fluorescence. Diamonds with a strong fluor tend to be less expensive. I personally love fluorescence because it makes lower color diamonds face up whiter, but some people say it could make the diamond look cloudy. I just ordered an I color asscher strong blue and it actually faces up really white and doesn''t look hazy at all. Just look at it in daylight when you get it and see if looks hazy or cloudy.

Not all SI2s are eye clean to the naked eye. What are the types of inclusion and where is it?

Hi HG,

I can think of a couple.

1. Strong Fluorescence will automatically drop the price some, but unless it's having a negative affect on the stone (rare, causes milkiness/cloudiness in direct sunlight), that's actually to your benefit. Many people search for this characteristic.

2. The crown and pavillion angle I'm not loving. The crown is on the shallower end, and the pavillion is pretty steep. This stone will most likely be a majority of white light, not a lot on fire. If you want a nice mix, you'd need the crown angle to come up to at least 33.5, preferably 34, the pavillion between 40.6 and 41. And, these numbers are rounded, it could be even worse...or possibly better, but not enough to make me happy.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I really think you should take advantage of their return policy and try again. I know you can do better.
