Toe Trouble POLL

Is your 2nd toe longer than your Big Toe?

  • YES, my 2nd toe *is* longer -- what's wrong w/me?

  • NO, my Big Toe rules the roost -- sorry, freakos!

They're actually about the same.

I don't get why it's considered weird though if the second toe is longer. The second finger on the hand is longer than the first after all! :rodent:

Lil Misfit--You DO have elfin toes! I think they're adorable.

I always thought it meant I am the BOSS of the family.
I read that! Have been telling DH all day that we must all yield to the power of "the toe".

Wonder if that's why the split is pretty even here on PS. Women who shop for their own diamonds are often "the boss" of the family. HA!!!!
According to my research it's only about 10-20% of the general population who have 2nd toe's longer than the first.

My second toe is longer ONLY ON MY LEFT FOOT. Which is annoying because my left foot is a smidge bigger anyway, so it makes finding shoes that fit a PITA. It's my dad's fault-he and I have the same freak feet. They're long and skinny and bony. PLUS I wear a 10-11 N which adds to the shoe buying challenge...although it does save me $ since most shoes don't fit me!

Also, my TWIN SISTER wears an 8.5-9. Oh and has adorable little chubby toes just like my mom.

Here they are in their freakish glory (ignore the marks and dirt, I'm wearing lace up sandal type shoes and I've walked a lot today in a dirty city! :cheeky: )

My second toes aren't longer than my big toes.... but my big toes are really WIDE! I get them from my dad but they look ok on a man!

I give up on trying to post a photo. Its not working.

A foot with a longer second toe is called a Greek foot. Doesn't that sound fancy? Greek statues often had this foot shape.

A foot with a longer big toe and the others gradually decreasing in size is an Egyptian foot and one where the second toe and big toe are the same length is a Roman foot. Now, if all the toes except the little one are roughly the same length, then you have a square or peasant foot.

That is my useless trivia for the day, unless someone takes up ballet and wants to buy pointe shoes.

Lady Disdain, what a cool piece of trivia--thanks for posting it!

That's so funny T2 ... for some crazy reason when I started this poll I thought to myself "I bet Haven & Thing2 both have it!" AND I WAS 3/4 right!

I had to email my parents as they're not close enough to take a peek!

Familial toe update: my parents BOTH have it. And all siblings who've checked in do also. We got a genetic double-whammy of Toe Funk. Think it also HELPS explain why I totally had no idea it wasn't *standard issue* for over forty years.

That was weird! I posted a picture that totally wasn't mine! Hmmm! Anyway ... lets see if this works: my toes in all their glory/power - :naughty:

 to the 3/4 right! I guess me and Haven do give off a long toe vibe. :cheeky: I actually don't mind my one long toe, aside from the shoe issues! But I'd have those anyway with my long narrow feets I suppose!

Cool polish color, Deco-- is it Vendetta? (For some reason, you strike me as the type of woman that could TOTALLY rock any polish named "Vendetta"!)

8-) Got that ped on a cruise ship & don't remember if the color had an awesome name like that! But it was my first time going solid Halloween/Gothy super black on The Long Toes (& friends) so I felt pretty daring, especially since it was in the more Hothouse Pink/Super Coral-friendly Caribbean.

You win! Nothing I could ever post will beat that.

Okay so I could have lived happily without that pick from DF.

So... what is the orthotic fix for this?

The recommended fix seems to be a pad that lifts the base of the Big Toe so that *it* starts to take the main front-foot weight, rather than the extremely thin mid-foot bones. Both of these links show their own versions of "toe pads" w/instrux on where to place it.

http://www.triggerpointbook.com/mortons.htm
http://www.footcare4u.com/mortons-toe-what-is-it-what-causes-it-how-to-treat-it/

I'm eager to try it out ... but will also probably head on over to a podiatrist to see if there's anything less D.I.Y. I can get for the long run. Not sure how I'm gonna slap these fluffy tiny Depends onto my summer flip-flops and not look (even more?) freaky!

Love all the toe pics!! Haven, at the risk of sounding odd (well, odder than I already sound in my posts that is) I think you have lovely feet as well!
And lil misfit, deco, thing, lknvrb4, great feet too! I also love the tatoos so many of you have. :appl:

My family loves to make fun of me because my second toe is longer.

I did some research about it. Most things that are normally said like "2nd toe longer means your smart" and things like that obviously are not true. However, the statue of liberty has a longer second toe.

If its good enough for Lady Liberty its good enough for me.

Here is my right foot in all its weird glory

So deco-tell me more about this Morton's toe thing-what issues do you think it's caused you? I did what the websites said to figure out if my second metatarsal is longer than my first, and it definitely is on both feet, even the one without the long second toe!

RQ, you can bend your toes? Can everyone else bend their toes too? Good lord I'm weirder than I thought..mine kinda tip forward a little bit and that's it.

Okay, first: This is officially my favorite PS thread of all time.

Packie--I can totally curl my toes. When I met DH I couldn't curl my toes and I just thought that was normal. But (he's a muscle specialist) after he started treating me I could suddenly control each toe, and independently from each other, too! It's a bit weird, but I can wave at you with my little pinky toe alone if I want to. :cheeky:

RQ--I love that toe fist! Hahaha!

Why thank you, Missy! My husband has little elfin toes, so he likes to make fun of my family's toes. If something needs to be picked up from the ground he'll say, "Honey, why don't you grab that with those toes of yours?" :cheeky:

Lady Disdain--Very cool background information, thank you!

F-D-L--Amazing. Just plain amazing.

HA to your husband! My husband's feet are way weirder than mine (they're SO WIDE it's hilarious-like flippers!) so he doesn't have any room to tease me!

Oh and I can totally pick things up with my monkey toes! I do it fairly often too, now that I think about it! :cheeky:

HA I can bend my toes too, just as much as RQ, now that I try it! I'm sure if you have tiny toes it's a lot harder to bend them like that, though.

Yep, same here...not a problem to bend these suckers!

Okay, here is what my feet normally look like- they are pretty long and thin. And see? my middle three toes are all the same length. I also have ridiculously high arches. I got custom orthotics and the doc said I had some of the highest arches he's seen. Um, yay for me? Actually it makes buying shoes a giant pain. No cute heels for me, they are just so uncomfortable because no part of my arches touch the shoe. So most of the weight ends up on the ball of my foot, with a little on the heel.

And just to gross everyone out, here are my feet last night....if anyone is wondering what 32 weeks pregnant + 90 degree heat + walking a decent amount looks like.

Please give us more details! What is he doing - is it exercise, massage, shock therapy :naughty: ? This sounds fascinating. I want to control my toes too - just creeping out my BF will be fun.

You're so funny. It IS kind of a creepy thing to be able to do.
My husband is a Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) Specialist. You can find out more on the MAT website:
http://www.muscleactivation.com/main.html

It's a hideous website, but the information is good. :cheeky: MAT is a hands-on treatment done with clients on a massage-like table. That's about all I can tell you about it! The science is waaaaay too involved for me. All I know is that it works well enough that DH has had a full schedule of clients for years and years, and has so many new referrals that he has to send them to other specialists because he's so booked.

That, and the treatment gives me super-crazy control of my toes!

I have freak feet. But I like them!
