to upgrade...or not??

Hey all.

Please dont laugh... I bought a ring for my gf at Jareds this summer (before I came here). I have not given it to her yet, however. The setting is "the one" so Im not worried about that, but I know that I got taken on the diamond.

The diamond that is currently in the ring is a princess .70 G VS1 (probably a "good" cut) that I am hesitant to post that I payed 2300 for. At the time I did not expect to be in the financial situation that I am in currently which I think would allow me to give her what I really wanted her to have in the first place, a princess excellent cut 1.0 eye clean near colorless.

Heres the catch... Jareds has an upgrade policy that would allow me to put that 2300 towards a peerless that meets my criteria, but I would obviously be paying ALOT extra for that diamond. OR should I cut my losses and keep that stone for a different piece of jewelry and buy from a vendor here.

What do you think the most cost effective or best thing to do would be?

Have you priced up suitable diamonds online so you have a comparison with the Jareds price?

My boyfriend and I are in a similar situation except we had doubts about both the setting and the diamond. We also really regret purchasing from the jeweler that we did because we felt pressured and their customer service was horrible. I won''t get into it here but, I did post a bad review for them online in several places. They also did not allow returns, just store credit. Our experience was so bad that we said we would rather lose money than ever deal with them again.

So, we found a much better jeweler, with better prices and awesome customer service. We explained the situation and he''s agreed to sell the ring for us on consignment but, if that doesn''t work then he''ll accept it as a trade-in. I''m really hoping it will sell on consignment because my bf would lose more if it was accepted as a trade in. ($800 loss vs. $1400 loss).

Even though my bf will lose money, he said it makes him happier to see me get a ring he didn''t think he''d be able to get and to get rid of a ring that has bad memories (we regret 200% ever walking into that jeweler''s store).

The math is pretty easy if you factor out ephemeral things like the convenient location of the store or the relationship with the staff.

Shop in the database here for what it would cost you to get what you want. Don’t forget things like shipping, modifying the mounting to accept the new stone and appraising.

Shop at Jared and see what a similar peerless would cost, net of the tradein and including the setting labor, ring modifications etc.

Shop in the database for a comparable stone to the one you’ve got. Most consumers seem to be able to sell for about half to three quarters of what you see similar goods advertised for here. If you’re a good salesman you may do better, if you have an unpopular item or you aren’t so good at, or just aren’t interested in, selling thing you may get a little less. Make some sort of estimate of where you fall on this scale.

Compare A-C to B and decide if that's worth the convenience of local shopping and the pain of doing a private sale.

can you post photos and the IGI info on this diamond from Jared''s? It may in fact be a great diamond or the size may be in perfect balance with the stone. I''m just trying to visualize the difference

I will try to get some quotes and see what happens, Im thinking it will probably be close.



I dont have any images from jareds, just the certification card with the thumbnail of the diamond in it.
