Hi Everyone. I have been a long time lurker and I decided to post cause I need some help. Sorry if this is a bit long.
My now husband and I (married in 11/05)
9.gif
bought my diamond about 2 years ago. I was involved in the process and helped to pic out my stone. I kinda knew about PS and in turn found WF and that is where I bought my stone. It is a 1.28 H VS2 from their expert selection. I have to say I love my stone. I dose have alot of fire. But I have not seen too may well cut stones so it is hard to compare. I do get complements all the time.
The specs are:
7.10 X 7.13 X 4.3
1.28
H
VS2
depth 60.7
table 55.1
PA 41
CA 34.7
culet no
fluro no
gridle thin-med
HCA 1.9 X/VG/VG/VG

Ok so here is the problems:
#1 DDS has set in
#2 I love my stone and it does have a great sparkle but I think I can do better
#3 Not sure if I can convinde DH to upgrade
#4 budget will allow about a 1.5ish J/K ACA (7500upgrade and 3000 new stone/head) I want to keep my original setting
#5 will I see a difference in a H vs J/K ?
#6 will I see a difference in size ?
#7 is ACA worth it ?
#8 do I upgrade even if DH doesn''t really want me to ?
#9 AM I CRAZY????????

Sorry it has been so long winded...any help/advise would be great.
Thanks in advance!!

You''re safe in assuming there will be a lot of support for an upgrade around here! So no, you''re not crazy! First, I will tell you that I personally would not be comfortable going from a H to a J/K. H was my minimum color, but of course that does not mean that you would feel the same way. I think the color I would be safer, though, if you have to go down in color. I do not think that 1.28 to 1.5 is a big enough jump to be worth it. Your stone is already 7.1mm and a 1.5 is only 7.4mm. I think you''d be better off going to the 1.75 range. But at least 1.6 to be noticeable.

In regard to your husband, I would not do it if he was dead set against it. I''d let him know that it is really important to you and something you''d enjoy daily and forever. My husband really did not want me to reset my original diamond for sentimental reasons, so we ended up agreeing to keep it as it is and he is giving me a new diamond set for our anniversary. I think I''d go ahead as long as your husband is not upset about it but wait if he is.

I just wanted to say that I upgraded from a 1.53 G/VS to a killer 2.36 J/SI2 (both super-ideal cut, AGS-0 stones)... and I have NEVER looked back! I ADORE my J, it is beautifully white, and it is also totally eye-clean. (I also have to say that I would SO consider a well-cut K stone, too!) SO, all other things being equal (and w/ hubby''s OK, of course!) I say, at least LOOK at "lower" color stones... you may just fall in love!

I think you would need to see the color to decide. I have an F stone because I can see color below H and I wanted a super white ring. I do have an H pendant that my grandma gave me recently its a beautiful stone but I definately see warmth in it. J/K is getting more yellow still.

Regarding your husband, I think its a baaaddddd idea to upgrade wthout him on board. Nope, I would not do it. There is so much emotion tied up in an engagement ring that I think it should be a joint decision to upgrade.

I can''t speak for the color because I am still trying to figure out what colors I like and don''t like. My opinion is about the upgrade. Personally, I don''t see the benefit in upgrading from a 1.25 to a 1.5, I''d hold out for something bigger! It''s been less than a year -- I say wait it out a bit.

I''m upgrading from a 1ct (it''s been 12 years for me) and it''s starting to look like I might only get a 1.5, so I''m seriously considering putting it off. I''m just not sure that .5 is going to be a big enough difference for me. I would prefer a full ct. upgrade.

As for your husband -- absolutely DON''T do it if there is any hesitation on his part -- .25 cts is NOT worth it. Start working on him now and he''ll be ready to do it for you soon, but it will be worth more to both of you if everyone''s on the same page.

Thanks everyone.
I won''t upgrade if my husband is not on board. I think he will give in edventually..it''s just a matter of how much effort/fighting I would have to do. I don''t want this do be miserable but I really want to go bigger!!

LynnB, could you tell the difference from your G to J?

I am kinda scared about going to a J/K. I don''t know if I could get it sent to me first to look at since I would be upgrading?
My H looks really white and it is not an ACA like what I am looking at now.
So I guess I should look for a 1.6 or larger to really notice a difference???

suzanne, are you near any jewelers who sell branded diamonds, like Hearts on Fire? If so, just go in and have a look at the different colors, and hopefully then you''ll know what you like and don''t like. Just make sure it''s a really well cut stone!

Here is a picture showing a 1.0 (6.5mm), 1.37 (7.2mm), and 1.63 (7.6mm) just to give you an idea. My finger is 5 1/4.

Thanks diamondseeker
It is good to see the difference in size.

So would anyone else do this, go from a H VS2 GIA to a J/K VS AGS ACA for @ 0.5cts?????
Is the cut / grades all that different?

#1 DDS has set in
it happens to the best of us!

#2 I love my stone and it does have a great sparkle but I think I can do better
in what way? sparkle or size? or both?

#3 Not sure if I can convinde DH to upgrade
that is an important factor to consider!

#4 budget will allow about a 1.5ish J/K ACA (7500upgrade and 3000 new stone/head) I want to keep my original setting
i wouldn''t do it for such a small change. especially with the drop in color. you won''t see a difference in size but you will notice a difference in color. even if the color doesn''t bother you, you''re not really gaining anything. (imo)

#5 will I see a difference in a H vs J/K ?
yes, as covered above.

#6 will I see a difference in size ?
no, as covered above.

#7 is ACA worth it ?
they are awesome but if you already have a sweet es stone, i wouldn''t change for aca status alone.

#8 do I upgrade even if DH doesn''t really want me to ?
i wouldn''t. it''s not worth the potential hard feelings.

#9 AM I CRAZY????????
no crazier than the rest of us!

best of luck in your decision!

Thanks Belle!
I love my stone in the way that it does have great sparkle, I probably have the best stone out of my friends. I used to like the size but now I am not so sure. I really like the crisp arrows of the ACA''s. I can see arrows in mine just not all the time.
I guess what it comes down to is I really want a bigger stone and a better cut.
The question is now do I wait till I can afford and find a G/H/I ACA around 1.75-2.0 or do it now with a J/K???

I think you can imagine you will get lots of support here for this! I upgraded twice, but had my firsts stone ten years before it really even occured to me to do so. I never really loved the shape or setting, (both style and the metal) but just figured this was just what it was. The ring had been designed by an old family friend of my husband to be''s, and the designer''s father was a diamond dealer who got the stone for him. Needless to say, we saw these people a lot so I did not really delve into changing it til we moved to the East coast. I am now on my second (last?) upgrade...and I am glad I did pursue it...Good luck. If your dh knows it matters to you, he might give it some thought!

if you want to upgrade (and you can get hubby onboard with the idea) i would wait until you can hit the 2ct. mark. if you need to sacrifice some color to get there (going j/k) then so be it but i wouldn''t sacrifice color just to go a little bigger (as in 1.5). i really think you will need to hit 2cts. to make it worthwhile.

I agree with belle, very wise advice. Good luck!!!

Yeah, I agree with Kaleigh and Belle....I''d hold out for a bigger jump in size...2cts plus...maybe for an important anniversary...5th? 10th?

Enjoy that beautiful sparkler you''ve got. I bet it''s lovely!
