I'm going to take a different point of view. I too love an OEC with all of its imperfectionsl -just like people-none of us perfect and all of us unique in our own way. However, if Adam is so generously offering to make it a little more to your taste, with no risk to you at all, I see no reason not to let his bench tweak it a bit and see if it becomes the "perfect" stone for you. It still won't be perfect but it might be perfect for you after Adam's bench reworks it a little. After all, we're not talking a major rehab here. It is an extremely generous offer on Adam's part with no risk to you at all. It's almost too good to pass up if you think this might just do the trick. And without the AVR premium may I add.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Thank you, Missy, for giving me the other side. I think for me the deciding factor is that it does sound like major rehab to me...although I know NOTHING about stone cutting. ;)

You made the right decision then. Your perfect stone will come along valmanin. I know it will. And in the meantime enjoy the search!

I sure hope so Missy! Didn't you just walk into OWD one day and walk out with a gorgeous honker AND a setting? I envy you!!!

"Gosh, you girls are making me want the larger stone again talking about the big beautiful facets!

DS you crack me up (in a nice way). I have just spent the past few days seriously drooling at that 2.29 that you posted AND because of you, having serious doubts about the stone I have on hold as a result of that!!!! Damn fickle creatures the lot of us.

 I know, trust me. I drive myself NUTS!!!

I just wanted to say than other than the initial rounding of the stone, AVR's are also hand cut. It takes many, many hours!!! I think it is impressive. I think they have Sarins and things to guide them like a road map, but I know Yoram hand cut that diamond because Jon told me!

No kidding!!! I am all over the place. OEC, antique cushion, smaller, lower color, bigger, higher color, higher budget, lower budget, higher budget, true antique, AVR...AAAHHHHH!!!   STop the madness.

Thank God I will be totally out of money after buying the stone because if I had some left I can't even imagine how the setting search would go.

Oh, I can relate to this more than you know!!! That is why mine is going into a solitaire until some revelation hits me for a setting!!!

Thanks and group hugs to both of you, you make me seem less nutty on so many levels, I will recount a conversation I had with my husband the other day.

Me: Honey I am thinking about hopping on a plane and going to the US (I live in Australia so this IS a big deal)
Him: On your own? (as opposed to taking him and our 5 year old too)
Me: Yep
Him: Why on earth would you do that?
Me: Oh, I just want to go and look at some diamonds to make sure I am making the right decision....
Him: So not only do you want to buy ANOTHER diamond but you now want to go to the US on your own as well (he said it with a smile on his face)
Me: Thats about the size of it
Him: You are getting crazier every day I swear.

And then I thought about it and went wait a minute the money I spend on flights accommodation etc could be put towards a butt kicking setting. And then I thought but gee I'd really like to go and see the settings.......

Honestly I am normally a VERY rational person, but add the fact that I can't see the stones in person and having to make massive purchasing decisions thousands of miles away and..... well lets just say I keep second guessing!!!!

I am amazed at how finding "the one" in a stone and then "that amazing an unique setting" allowing for budgets and personal tastes of course, turns normal intelligent men and women into slightly crazed people, me included.

It is extremely difficult buying diamonds and settings from a distance, even within the US. Of course, I am glad we can because I surely do not have access to the quality of diamonds locally that I can access from the vendors we know about here. But this process does turn people a little crazy, but I think it is partly because we are researchers, strive for perfection (or excellence at least!), and are possibly a little OCD before it is all over! I second guess everything!!!!

I relate completely to all of this and as I said in DS's thread, if my ring had not plopped into my lap "AS IS" then I am very sure I would still be hunting and looking! When I have loose diamonds I get stuck in analysis paralysis and can't make a decision about a setting and eventually it seems I throw my hands in the air and give up, sell the diamond, and keep looking. Anyways, I hope better for you!

Thanks valmanin but remember I went through a number of expensive resets till I found my HG so it was not without its trials and tribulations. That is for sure. I would say getting this ring was about 10 years in the making though I didn't know it a decade ago. It was always in my subconscious if that makes any sense. I was longing for an old cut like the one my grandmother had worn and my great grandmother had worn before her but I wasn't fully cognizant of that at the time.

Sometimes I think we need to go through whatever process we need to in order to arrive at our HG ring to make it all that much sweeter. Look at all that other PSers (Dreamer, Fortekitty, Charmy, DiamondSeeker to name only a few) have gone through to finally get the ring of their dreams and you see it's almost a requirement to go through to truly know what their dream ring is and enjoy it to the fullest. If that makes any sense.

So, while I did find my dream OEC the same day (and first day) I visited Adam (I got lucky with that for sure) it was 10 years in the making and many rings later from my original lol. But that makes it all the sweeter for me. And I know you will find the old cut that sings to you as well and when you do I want plenty of pictures!!! :cheeky: :appl:

Dreamer-I just noticed your tagline and I second that!
One ring to rule them all!!!

Here here!!! Well, I can't pretend that it is only in diamonds I am this indecisive and picky. Lets just say my husband uses the term paralysis by analysis more often than I would care to admit. I also am not good at compromising when I REALLY want something the way I want it. I tell myself, "You are willing to compromise...on color." Of course, I really WANT a lower color so it's not really a compromise now is it. :Up_to_something:

Missy, I did follow your search when you were looking...including the FY honker you almost got. I think that was before I was posting though. I know that when I saw what you picked...that was it...I was done. Had to have one of those pieces of gorgeousness. I hope to join the club of satisfied HG owners soon!!! One problem, I don't have the patience of those ladies. :nono:

I do totally agree with Dreamer's sentiment of "one ring to rule them all". In fact she is the one along with MGR that really made me think about that. Rather than end up with two e-rings with smaller stones...go for "the one" that will give you the most pleasure and get the best one you can!

I do have setting paralysis and am just happy I have an almost new, totally classic setting that I can use again, or otherwise, the poor diamond could sit in a box indefinitely! I am leaning towards a simple setting even if I do reset to an antique style because I think having the flexibility to get a new band once in awhile will satisfy that need to buy something new that I love. Or it may stay in this setting forever, who knows?!

I agree with Dreamer too, but I would say "one diamond to rule them all" since I will be wearing it in a ring holder if I max out my budget. At least you already have a beautiful solitaire setting. I agree on the bands too...need some way to keep boredom at bay and there are SO many options for stacking.

Hi,

I am totally bummed. The stone I liked came back a "J" not an "I" as advertised and the seller won't drop the price at all, not even one tiny bit. Looks like I am still hunting too... At least diamondseeker found her grail for now, I can sit and drool at her pics, in the meantime back to my crazy search!!!

Are you totally set on I or above? Gosh, I would take a look at it if the return policy is good since that is only one grade off. J looks pretty white to me but I am not color sensitive.

What exactly are you looking for? I don't think I ever got your specs?

No the point is not that its a "J" colour, the stone was clearly advertised and touted as an "I" it had a what I consider fairly high price as an "I" and now it has come back from GIA as a "J" and the price in my opinion should be lowered. It came back a VS2 not an SI1 but the guy was half expecting that and did advertise that. Frustrating situation to be in. The stone is one that was on here about a month ago.

Well that was quick, I see its back being a topic of conversation yet again. Look on the forum its the 3.40 J someone else is talking about and its $37500.00 not negotiable on the price.

Gotcha. I just went and read the thread. Totally understand.

I just looked up a comp on OWD and it was:
$41,999
Old European
3.27
J
VS2

So, the price seems fair, but not a deal. But, it doesn't sound like the guy would be a pleasure to deal with. :nono:

One color grade difference is considered acceptable and not a misrepresentation. So I can see why they won't go down in price, even though I wish they would for you! If you love it, it might be with looking at as long as there is a good return policy!

You are sweet and I will try to give you some inspiration pics, but I still feel uncertain about what to do!!! Setting then 2.29 just gives me 30 more days to think about it!!!

Oops!! Replied before reading the other posts! You are exactly right, no compromises!!!

If you saw what went on behind the scenes yesterday I can say I would rather buy a stone from the JBEG girls who I have made a large purchase from before or Jon or Adam. I don't think its even the price of it, it's the way it was handled. At least purchasing a AVR you know you are getting perfection.

Totally understand! Sounds like you have had an awful experience. So sorry. :nono: I truly hope you find your dream stone from your dream vendor soon!!!

Naah, it's O.K. after a night of rest, and I have had time and sleep to think about it, its all good I am one of those people that thinks if its meant to be it is if not then I am at zen with it. There are always other diamonds. It's just testing my level of patience!!!!!

I see you are *maybe* going for the M coloured stone? Its a pity the 2.71 wasn't whiter I would buy it, but then I guess you probably might have too....

Actually, I loved the color of the 2.71. It just wasn't big enough for me.  But, the 2.66 (K) that I had was a lot whiter and looked like a twin of 2.71 in terms of pattern...also faced up larger than the 2.71. It was stunning!!!
