Hi everyone,

I was thinking about certifying my diamond with the GIA and have it laser inscribed. I think the diamond clarity is on the range of SI2-I2 quality. I am not sure. Is this a good thing to do? Or is an appraisal good enough?

If the purpose is for insurance, an appraisal is enough. If you wanted to sell the diamond, the GIA report would be nice, although if the clarity turned out to be I1 or lower, then I think it might be a negative.

Why do you want a lab report?

Depends on why you want it.

Thank you for your replies. I figured that a GIA certificate would add more value if I decided to sell the ring in a few years.

It might be. But it might not be. On the plus side, it would give you AND your buyer a lot more certainty. For you that's a good thing because you can look to see what comparable stones are priced at and then discount accordingly. For your seller it's a good thing because they don't have to rely on you for information about the stone.

It might not be:

Because if your GIA rating comes back to say only: good cut, poor polish K color I1 clarity. I'd look that up NOW to see what the comps are going for.

If you bought an uncertified stone. I'm afraid you might find you paid way too much.

Please understand you might not be able to recoup even half of what you paid.

From my conversations with the appraiser today it looks like a F/G diamond with an I2 clarity. It is about 2.55 carts.

Okay. So look up the worst case: GIA G-H and I1. Look that up and see what comps go for.

Okay thanks Gypsy. I feel better now. If I ever do decide to sell it, I will get it certified. For now, I will just go with the appraisal. Thanks for your help.
