Hey there!

I am going to have to go to the jewelry store my FIANCE (still cool to say it) just got my ring at, because evidentally the box they put the ring in was theirs (Long''s Jewelers in NH) and NOT Verragio''s box. When my at the time, boyfriend, opened it to show is Mother, it dropped OUT of the box and hit the pavement!!!

There are some nicks in the platinum band on the bottom part that faces my palm - but I can feel them, and we want to get that fixed. We went in and the salesperson said that would be an easy quick fix and to come in Mon or Wed when the jeweler is there.

What will they do to it do you think? Is there something special they need to do rather than just buff it out? I don''t want it to lose it''s luster and shine or anything. I''m just not familiar with Platinum, so I don''t know what will be done.

Any help or advice you can give me to ease my mind will be greatly appreciated!

Also - doesn''t Verragio usually send their ring box when purchasing their ring? Evidentally they just sent the setting and the diamond we had got set at the store, and they put in in their own box. I am going to ask them to get Verragio''s box for me - since this one doesn''t hold my ring tight enough. Any thoughts on that would be great too.

THANKS!!!

Hey Dancin Girl,

That's too bad but try not to worry too much.Platinum is purer and more malleable than gold and can easily get a maze of fine scratches. If the mark on the bottom of your ring isn't real deep they could use a rubber craytex wheel to take the scratch out . If not and it is a deep mark they could either file it a little and then use the wheel. The polishing process to eliminate a visible scratch is abrasive. You have to cut the scratch with something that is "more rough" than the platinum in order to take it out. Gradually you go finer and finer, and in most cases there is a reduction of surface metal where the scratch was removed.

Competent jewelers who work in platinum can fix this blemish with usually no problems (depending on their level of experience working witrh the metal) Don't Worry, unless the scratch is a deep guage it should be an easy fix and may just need a minor repolishing.

hey Josh

Please explain what you mean when you wrote that Platinum as purer and more malleable than Gold. I no understand.

Platinum compared to gold is more pure in the sense that it contains more of the primary metal/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

without the addition of other alloys (alloy being the added mixture of another metal which reduces /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

the overall purity). Gold has more alloys added to the metal to give it more or less durability./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

10 Kt. Gold = 41.6% Pure Gold & 56.4% added alloys

14 Kt. Gold = 58.5%Pure Gold & 41.5% added alloys/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

18 Kt. Gold = 75.0%Pure Gold & 25.0% added alloys/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

For example added Alloys in Gold include copper, silver, & Zinc. Added alloys at different /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

percentages can lighten or Darken the overall color of gold in a finished piece. Silver would/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

lighten the metal, copper would darken the metal and zinc is added to gold during casting to make/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

it flow better. Durability in the sense that with the addition of these alloys at different percentages /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

can make the metal more/less ductile, springy,harder(10kt gold) or softer(18Kt Gold)./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

Platinum is more malleable in the sense that when the metal is bent or shaped (depending on the /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

nature of the stress or the force being applied) will not retain the stress of the bending or shaping /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

(it is moved and shaped easier with less stress). Platinum does not have “memory” vs. other metals /www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

like white gold./www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]/www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif[/img]

Hope this answers your questions…

Well I don't know what is considered a deep nick, but the worst one is right on the corner of the square edge bottom. Visably noticable - and then there is a smaller surface one on the bottom half of the square bottom. I hope it works out okay!

Hey Dancin Girl,

I wouldn't worry. Regina had some repairs done on her vatche platinum ring I bought her last year. She wears it to work everyday and is constantly coming into contact with heavy things and handling freight. The jeweler had to reshape and buff out some dings on the bottom. Everything turned out fine. Ring looked good as new...

Let us know how it goes and give your other half 3 good wacks to the head...Lol..Just Kidding..

UPDATE:

Nick and I went to get the platinum of my ring "buffed" today to get out the boo-boos. All is well - and looks and feels MUCH better!

They did it for free and they also replaced my watch battery and set it for me at no charge either! They are going to find out if they can get me the Verragio box I want as well. They aren't sure if they (Verragio) charge extra for it even though we bought their setting! They will call my fiance and let him know when they find out.

All's well that ends well....

THANK GOODNESS!!!!!!!

Good to hear of the happy ending. Throwing in the free watch battery probably was icing on the cake.
