I haven''t received it yet, but since I don''t usually wear rings, I''m really worried I''m going to damage or lose it somehow. I will definitely take out an insurance policy... Any recommendations for that?

Also, if I were going to take my ring off at say, the gym, should I put it in its box for safekeeping? What do you guys do? I''m also kind of worried about the shower and sinks and stuff, since I once lost a diamond earring in my own shower! Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

do a search about insurance, there are many threads with recommendations. basically, you can add a rider to your homeowners or get a stand alone policy. you''ll have to see what works out best for you. if you''re worried about losing it, keep it on at all times! i would not ever recommend taking it off at the gym. no way. people steal shoes that cost much less for the same effort. don''t give them a free ride to your precious jewelry!

I would never take it off at the gym, leave it at home where it will be safe. Soak it in jewelry cleaner while you shower. Never take it off near the sink unless the drain stop is closed. Best advice, leave it on all the time!

The only way I would ever take it off at the gym would be if I had a very secure locker, and even then I'd be paranoid about someone breaking in. You might want to consider getting a sturdy necklace chain to put the ring on when you don't want to have it on your finger (like at the gym).

As for the shower, I put mine back in its original box on my dresser when I take a shower at home. If you're showering at the gym, see my note above about a thick, sturdy chain!

If I leave my house, the ring is always on me. I never leave home without it.

That means I work out with it on (I wear gloves when weight train, so that helps.) At home, I take it off when I shower and sleep. I actually don''t have to wear it often, since I work from home but I figure I was given this ring to enjoy it, so I do wear it even while kicking back at home.

I don''t wear it to cook at home, ever. I have a little bowl I put the rings in the kitchen. Outside of my house, I will wear the rings to cook (we tend to cook over at my friend''s house, who has an awesome kitchen.)

And finally, when traveling, I never take it off. Not for shower, sleep, washing hands, or anything else. I would die if I left it in a hotel room by accident.

Good idea! Before I read the gloves part, I cringed when I thought about a beautiful platinum or gold ring being scraped against dumbbells and weight machines!

Just to add:

I don''t wear my ring when cleaning around the house. I also ALWAYS keep it in the SAME PLACE. It has a designated box and does not come off my finger unless it is going in that box. You can lose a lot of jewelry just by misplacing it. I agree about never taking it off when you travel. If you are doing something rigorous when you are traveling, you can carry a jewelry box with you so that you can keep it in there and in the safe at the hotel. But most importantly, get some good insurance just in case.

Everyone seems to have their own preferences for wearing or not wearing.

Me--I don''t like the feel of rings and around the house I prefer not to wear mine. But when I get dressed up and go out I wear my Leon Mege pave ring. The pave is more delicate so I accept the fact that it is not for everyday toilet bowl cleaning, weight training, garadening or dirt biking. When it''s on my finger I am wearing it as a planned event, when it''s off it''s in my jewlery box. I would NEVER take it off in public or over a sink. I don''t wear mine to bed or in the shower.

I know I am extreme but I am an active person and don''t like the feel of a any ring. I also bent my first solitare kneading bread. In those days I wore it 24/7.

I think I am in the minority.

Unfortunately, leaving it at home isn''t foolproof either. My engagement ring and Rolex were stolen from the top of the dresser in my bedroom while I was outside working in the yard. The thief came through the unlocked back door while I was hauling branches around to the front yard.

Oh no, that''s terrible! Glad you were ok!

Yup...I don''t have a safe at home, so I''d rather have it on me. If I get mugged, at least I know what the thief looks like (unless he''s wearing a mask, of course!)

And yes...gloves are a must for weight workouts! I don''t mind patina, but that would be too much.

I wear mine all the time with the following exceptions:

Swimming, travelling if I''m not certain it''s safe, when I put lotion on my hands at home, and when I shower (sits in the cleaner). I do cook with it, but that''s cause John is a glove Nazi and if I''m in the kitchen or cleaning I''ve got gloves on the whole time.

I do wear it when I work out, haven''t had a problem with it.

BUT when I get my ring re-set... I''m going to have to be more careful as my current setting is SUPER safe and sturdy, and my new one will be less so... most likely because it will have some pave work on it.

I mainly asked because I go to a gym that''s right by my office, so I will probably have to take it off when I go straight from work. I was just going to keep it in my purse in the locker, but I may do the gloves or sturdy chain thing instead.

Thanks to everyone for sharing! I know nothing is foolproof, but it''s nice to hear what others'' experiences are.

It bent kneeding *bread*? How bizarre! I list kneeding as an occasion I won''t wear my ring but only because of getting flour/water glue stuck in the melee LOL I don''t know how bread dough could bend it???

The reason is because after a couple kids and a few pounds I couldn't get my ring off very easily. I have large knuckles but a slim finger so in order to keep my ring from swirling around on my finger I have to get it sized pretty small. I was one of those who wore it 24/7 and never gave it a second thought. But after bending the whole head I decided I could live without wearing my rings all the time because I got an upgrade and would be horrified if I damaged it!! And I still have the spinning ring syndrome which can leave the stone on the palm of my hand. Yea, pave and bread dough--never again!!

Oh, the bread dough didn't bend it. I put my weight down on it as I was kneading with my knuckles! I don't think I've baked bread since!!

Don''t leave it in the gym locker! A guy at my gym had his wallet and car keys stolen from the locker. The thief went out to the parking lot and stole his car as well. The gym is not responsible for anything you leave in the locker. I think the suggestion to wear the ring on the chain is excellent.

oooh okay that makes sense now LOL I only kneed with my heels so the safety of my ring isn''t a concern of mine so much as getting flour and water gluey stuff all in it lol

I don't wear mine to the gym, not that I've been going much. Also, I take mine off and put it in its box the moment I get home. As for public restrooms, put it in your purse before you enter (thanks, Madam Bijoux). Last tip -- make sure it fits correctly. I had the fright of my life recently. In fact, I'm so paranoid now that I'm thinking of tying my ring to my watch!

I don''t wear mine to the gym. But, I work from home. So, I usually go from home to the gym. My ring stays at home where it is insured. Other than that, I always wear my ring when leaving the house. And, even though I work from home, I put my ring on just because I enjoy wearing it so much!

You''ve been given great advice! Actually, I read this in another thread and thought it such a great idea that I follow it. If I have to take off my ring outside of the house, I give it to my husband to wear. It fits on his pinky. Then I soap down my hands in the restroom in peace.

This is pretty much assuming that your hubby will be with you when you have to take off your ring...

Thanks! I got the idea for the gym because that's what I do every time I have to wear sterile gloves for medical procedures. I thought of it after I put a ring (not my engagement ring) in my scrub pocket, which turned out to have a hole in it! Luckily the ring was found on the floor by a nurse. No more scrub pockets for me!

Anyway, here's a different kind of suggestion...if you find yourself and your ring in an area where you don't feel completely safe, turn your ring so the stone is toward your palm and it looks like you're just wearing a gold band. I don't know if it's actually a deterrent or not, but it gives me some peace of mind.

Wow, I was talking about this with my co-workers just yesterday. We all take the subway to work and sometimes that can be iffy on the safety. It seems that quite a few girls turn their rings around. However, the general consensus was that since so many women do that it''s not really much of a cover up.

When I go to the gym that''s in the same building as my office, I prefer to lock my ring in one of my filing cabinets or desk drawers. I guess it just seems like it''s less likely someone would come into my office than try rifling through gym lockers. I''m thinking about a chain also, and have done that when playing softball, but I still get nervous about it catching on something and breaking the chain.

This is one of the reasons I am having a design made on the underside of my ring - so that when I spin it around it will still look like a ring... but just a ring with three little rubies rather than one big diamond.

That''s a great idea! I guess an eternity band would also work the same way as long as it''s a full eternity, not a 3/4.
