I've spent the better part of two months "agonizing" over it. Ok maybe not, it's been fun and educational, but now comes the part about taking the cash out of the old wallet and spend it. I've got a setting picked out at a local store, but wasn't impressed with the selection of stones there so I've been shopping online for the stone. I'm sold on a H&A stone and have a couple picked out at WF.

I think they are both pretty equal but would love some input from the smart folks here. Without further adieu:

.728 I VS2

.741 I VS2

I'd like to stay under $2800 for the stone and spend a little extra on the setting that she loves. Any input is appreciated.

The first one is a wee bit larger (dimensionally) and a wee bit less $. Otherwise, it's a coin toss. Or buy both and have them set as earrings.

But seriously, either choice is perfect.

You did a great job! They both look smashing, but I would get the first one just because it''s a tad cheaper and even faces up the same as the second one.

They both look great. I''d have WF eye-ball them and suggest which one they like the best. They are both going to be beautiful, great picks!!!

I went to the local store that has the setting I'm getting to see what kind of H&A they had access to. They were able to show me some comparable in size and specs, but they were over $1k more. Granted, I'm in the store as a family friend so I'm sure they will work with me some, but I don't know if they have that kind of room in the stones. She is calling the cutters to track some more down today and see what she can do about prices. I did have her pull the setting out of the case and hold it since it is a one of a kind piece. Glad it hasn't gone anywhere in the last two months.

I told the sales manager that I would consider ordering from WF and have the store set the diamond for me since she didn't think they would be able to come close to WF prices. She did balk a little about girdle thickness on the stones from WF. I didn't have any of the specs or copies of certs with me, but she said they won't mount anything with girdles that are too thin. She couldn't really say what qualified as "too thin" but I started looking at some others available on the pricescope cut search. Some of the listings have a "th-m f" listed and others have a number (2.07) listed. I can guess what the letters denote with the exception of the "f". Is the number listed the percentage from an AGS cert? Is it an average or a max girdle thickness?

I'm going to send the AGS certs from WF to her today to see if she can work with those stones. Will let you all know what happens.

PLEASE just buy the setting from them and let WF set it if they will. No offense, but everyone has a "family friend" jeweler, and very often they end up getting talked into an inferior stone. If there is a stone that has a "very thin" or "extremely thin" girdle all around, it can be an issue, but these WF stones are FINE! There is NO REASON to get a different stone.

Hi jay,

On the AGS cert, it lists the minimum to maximum numbers for the girdle.

i.e., taken from a WF stud stone:

Faceted 1.7 to 3.8%

I have to agree, with everything. And I hate to say it, but I actually hate hearing, "the jeweler is a family friend".....

Haha.. ok, ok i get. :)

If they won't mount the WF stone for me, I will get the setting and talk to WF.

Good plan. Trust us, we''ve seen more people get ripped off by family friends than we''ve seen where someone got a great deal for a great stone. Get the details about the setting before you buy it, then talk to WF to make sure they''ll set it.

Ditto, again.

Gee nf, keep this up and I may never have to type a lengthy post again.

Don''t worry Ellen, you can take back over once I go back to school in the fall!

WF also makes lovely custom designs if they don''t have a stock setting that you like. The ring in my avatar was a custom design by them. I really would have WF mount the stone, less hassle in case something goes wrong.

You gals are all so smart. Thanks for the help.

I emailed specs on the WF stones to the store and she insisted the girdles were too thin for her to commit to anything without seeing them.

They are bringing in a Tolkowsky stone, which she claims is "better" than an H&A, for me to look at. It''s more than the Wf stones, but I won''t have to pay for setting or getting a new head put in the e-ring. It''s a wash on the bottom line. It''s starting to feel like I''m getting the runaround now. I know... you all told me so

I''ll call WF in the morning and explain the situation and see what it''s gonna cost me for them to mount the stone in a setting that I send to them.

I''d certainly consider to WF for something custom, but I need this ring in hand in a little over 3 weeks. I''ll keep you all posted and I''m sure will have some more questions.

I hope we don''t have to say we told you so! But it does sound like the runaround. A thin girdle isn''t too much of an issue, it''s an extremely thin or very thin girdle that needs to be worried about.

What kind of setting are you looking for that you can get from the B&M ASAP and not from WF?

The lucky lady has some pics of it on her camera, but I''d rather not bother asking her in order to keep suspicions at a minimum. I just put my camera battery on the charger to snap some pics when I pay the store a visit tomorrow. The setting is unlike anything I''ve ever seen and, well, I''ll post some pics of it tomorrow.

You will not be disappointed with an ACA from Whiteflash. Either diamond will be fine, but you better reserve it, before it is gone.

OK, picked up the setting today and it will be on its way to WF in the morning. The store brought in a similar Tolkowsky but it just didn''t seem to perform like the H&A did. Bottom line is still a wash so off it goes to WF.

Here is a couple sneak peaks. It looks a little empty around the top, don''t you think?

Unique setting. I don''t think I''ve seen it anywhere. I''m sure that WF will fill up that empty spot for you!!!
