So, after two weeks of actually going to the B&M stores, local Toronto jewellers and wholesalers to view stones, I''m leaning towards committing PS sacriledge and buying from Tiffany''s ... I realize that won''t be a popular decision around here, but for a number of reasons (not least of which is that my fiance-to-be absolutely adores the Tiffany setting and will absolutely flip when she sees the blue box ;)) I''ve decided to go this route, even though it''ll definitely mean getting a smaller stone within my budget ...

Now, the plan is to propose this summer on a trip of ours to Europe. Tiffany''s of course has stores in Paris, Florence, Milan and Rome and we''ll be in all those cities at some point (yeah, it''s an awesome trip, cutting into the budget for this ring a bit, but it''s worth it;). I was thinking that instead of bringing a ring over from Toronto, that I''d surprise her with an empty blue box (for the proposal) and set up an appointment for us to go and view some rings and pick one out in one of the Tiffany & Co.s across the pond.

Now, I have several questions that hopefully some of you PSers might be able to answer:
- Will prices be reasonably comparable (after exchange rate considerations of course)?
- Can I expect the staff in those locations to have a reasonable command of English (although her French is perfect, mine''s atrocious and we know no Italian)?
- Does the VAT rebate for foreigners apply to luxury items like an e-ring? The minimum for any purchase is 50 euros but is there an upper limit to the rebate amount? (Considering the 15% tax I''d pay at the Toronto store, the 18% vat that I might save there would be a considerable savings if I could claim this)

If any of you have any experience when it comes to buying rings in Europe generally, I''d be glad to hear about any other good jewelers that you may have been to.

Cheers,
holepunch

hey holepunch,
i have no experience with tiffany''s in europe but i wanted to wish you the best of luck. it sounds like it will be an awesome trip for you both!
please let us know how it goes.

It sounds like you have a wonderful trip coming up! Buying the ring overseas brings up a lot of complicated issues and I''m afraid I don''t have the answers. I will say though that it has been my experience in major European cities at well know stores you can find someone who speaks good English to assist you in most cases. If you are planning to buy from Tiffany''s, I would just call the customer service number from their website and ask them these questions.

i wouldn''t.
1. you will get hit with duty when you return.
2. vat is hard to get back
3. if you need repairs it will be difficult.

how ''bout a stop in new york on the way? will any tiffany repair any tiffany ring?

On the VAT issue, from what I''ve read, some stores will give you back the VAT / deduct it on the spot, or deal directly with a vat facilitating company that takes a cut, which makes the process easier.

I hadn''t considered the duty on the way back ... I suppose it''s one of those things you need to declare, isn''t it ... hmmmm ... that''s definitely a consideration. Seems to me the duty would be the 6% (I think it''s at 6 now) excise tax on luxury goods, plus 15% PST/GST? Any idea if there would there be other additional costs if I declared it? (service fees for whoever assessed the duty maybe, as with shipped items?)

That brings up another question for me, but I''ll post a separate topic about it.

Thanks,
holepunch

unless you put the ring on her finger and tell her to BE QUIET and do not declare it. just walk on through....

Hmmm ... i *suppose* that''s an option ...

You wont get hit with duty when you get back if its on your GF''s finger.
VAT is no problem in EU...
Tiffany guarantee''s their jewelry "world-wide"

But the biggest selection in-stock is the NY Flagship store...

Page 7 of this document deals with re-entering Canada with jewellery.

Do you have some parameters (size, clarity...) in mind? It could be a challenge in finding what you want from the in-store inventory.

i agree about inventory...when I got my ring, Tiffany''s had to search their inventory company wide and then bring stuff in from all different stores. NY, Beverly Hills, Vegas...those are the stores that tend to have the best selection...if you just walk in you might not get what you want to look at right then and there!

A little off topic, but some advice--if they proposal is going to be surprise consider getting the ring early in one of the first cities you go to instead of waiting... that way she''ll be able to really enjoy the trip after you give it to her and be thinking "is he going to propose on this extremely romantic trip???" the whole time.
