Hi all! I greatly apologize if I posted this in the wrong place. Eep.

My boyfriend and I are going ring shopping for the first time tomorrow, and I just want to make sure my head is on straight as far as my expectations.

My favorite ring of all time is the Tiffany flower engagement ring. It's being sold there for $4,500...

There are 17 diamonds in the ring, and it's only 0.60ct total, and platinum (knife edge band). Since that is out of our budget, we're going to a couple of local jewelers tomorrow to see how much it would cost to get it replicated, and in white gold (platinum is too expensive for us).

How much should we expect to pay for a custom replica?

We were thinking no more than $1,300... because the diamonds are melee, and the total carat weight is 0.6, so it shouldn't cost THAT much, right?

Are we complete idiots? Should we be expecting to pay more?

Smart of you not to shell out for Tiffany. There, you pay for name, advertising & fancy address & can get something just as thrilling for a good deal less.

You might get more answers if you ask this question in Rocky Talky -- they're the diamond mavens of the world!

$1300 is lowballing. You are way underestimating for labor and materials I think. I would expect to pay $3000. It might be lower, maybe in the $2000 range, but I think $1300 is WAY WAY undervaluing it. You might be paying for a name with Tiffany on that, but they still have to do the work and supply the material.

HI:

Custom work is always expensive--people get sticker shock.

cheers--Shaorn
