Hi everyone, quick question to anyone that has any knowledge about the tiffany legacy "ornate" (graduated side stones)..... I am having this setting made for a 2ct center stone. My stone is not a perfect square cushion (it is close, l/w is about 1.04), my question is, when you set this, would you set the longer side north and south or east and west? The setter thinks it would be better north and south but from some pics I have seen on this site of regular legacies, it looks like the longer side runs east and west. What do you think? My measurements are 7.53 x 7.25 so I don''t know how much of a difference this is going to make. I would appreciate the advice. Thanks everyone!

Hurray! You found your stone!!!

I would set it north/south. At 1.04 l/w, it's pretty darn close to being a perfect square, so it won't be an obvious difference, but will have a subtle elongating effect on the finger.

Congrats on finding your stone and let's get some pictures up, chop chop.

I think hers is a 1.05 l/w ratio and it's also set n/s.

It's going to be gorgeous!!! The "ornate" version of the Legacy is my favorite! I can't wait to see it.

About setting it n/s or e/w--I agree with Pixley that a 1.04 l/w ratio isn't going to be very noticable. Still, I have an asscher with a 1.03 ratio and I had the same issue about how to set it.

For me, it came down to the shape of my fingers. I have large hands, so my fingers are both wide and long. I decided that I wanted as much spread left to right as possible, so I had my stone set east/west. If I had long, thin fingers and wanted to increase the spread from the base of my finger to my knuckle, I would have had it set north/south. With a 2 carat stone in a Legacy-style setting, you probably won't have to worry about spread so much--I feel that the safter option is to go north to south since that's how most cushions are set.

A 1:104 is considered a square by all means...
Its a matter of preference really...

Some jewelers will set them east-west as it can make a spreadier appearance!

Thanks for all the really fast responses! Pixley, I did decide on taking the original stone that I was looking at. I had an independant appraiser look at it and he raved about the brialliance and told me I am getting a great price for it so I took the plunge. I wont have pics for awhile but I will post as soon as I can. Anyway, looking at the pics of the ornate on the tiffany website, I feel like it is east and west (but that could be the angle of the pic). Pixley, will running it north and south make the fingers look longer or shorter? She has a size 6 finger but I wouldnt consider them long. Decisions, decisions.......all of you make great points, I will just have to take it all in. I also agree that I the stone is essentially square but the setter is the one that is reminding me that it is not so I have to make a decision. Thanks again and I will keep you all in the loop

That's faaaantastic!

Ya know, I just checked out the Tiffany's site and it's so hard to see which way they're oriented because the culet is darn near invisible. You could go either way really. Orienting my cushion n/s definitely had an elongating effect on my finger, but mine is a 1.14 l/w ratio and I wear a size 4 1/4, so I prefer the vertical spread rather than horizontal. On your size stone, I think you can't go wrong either way. In this picture that was posted on PS earlier, it does look like they're oriented e/w (someone correct me if I'm mistaken - it could be my warped flat-screen distorting things!).

Its always pointy...

I think the culet on kush's stone is pointy as well. Tough decision! NewEnglandLady's given you some great advice about finger shape.
