Tiffany Girdle - Cheated? HELP!!!

Having somewhat of a nervous breakdown...about to purchase ring, just really, really love the tiffany setting and fear I'm getting absurdly reamed on this stone.....

PLEASE tell me your honest opinion! Supposed to go to the store in four hours (noon PST!)

First of all, don''t panic. I plugged the numbers into DiamCalc and they fit fine for the classic girdle. The spread for this stone is rather usual for given proportions and girdle thickness - this is probably as much as one can tell based on the numbers, which are quite all right for traditional ideal cut diamond.

To be completely sure, you need to get an independent appraiser to examine the real stone - not the average numbers.

Regarding the blog you referred, please keep in mind that it is produced by a company to promote their products and can include fear tactic to steer you toward buying from that company.

Every diamond should be evaluated based on all the numbers, not just one parameter (like diameter in your case). It is possible to find a diamond with slightly bigger spread, but it doesn''t mean you have to dismiss this one.
 
lol....thank you for that, seriously, we''ve been looking for A YEAR, and kept coming back to tiffany because, well, my current one (we''re trading up) is from there, FI is really into it, we don''t mind paying the 1K premium or whatever, and, now that i know more about diamondsd, i''m getting married in two weeks and haven''t time to cobble together something. plus i''m one of those lame-os who loves going to tiffany''s to get her ring polished, and i am also in a circle of lame-os who are really into names.

i think i freaked not only when i saw that site (THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT TO ME, BTW) but also when i went into movado and in their very open setting was an SI2 that was SOOOO dirty, and the saleslady was pretending like it was so great, and i feared my tiffany''s sales lady was doing the same thing to me, but i was none the wiser! so i searched this morning and FOUND THAT ARTICLE and i totally freaked.

any other opinions about the stats? girdle? etc.?

has tiffany''s been ever known to ream someone with a nasty diamond, like movado (THEY WERE CHARGING $7K for a 1 carat SI2, totally dirty with visible spots, H color!!!!)?
 
oh, and the insane urgency is because i went into movado last night, and just feared i am being a big idiot because i waited so long to finalize everything, and JUST looked at the numbers, and wondered if i could have had a "bigger" 1 carat for the same at tiffany''s or for cheaper elsewhere. BUT i love the tiffany setting on my small fingers, and it for whatever reason is important to us. :)

thanks for that link....we''re trading in (tiffany''s has a "if you double, you can trade in for the cost of the setting" ($400 appx) policy) so we don''t have to pay the whole $10,300. :)

also, i want a new one! the platinum scratches up terribly, and i want the scratches to be mine! :) :) :)

i feel much better, though, seeing that!
 
also, what''s up with that ERR on the table percentage? and the polish is only good vs my excellent. this is really neat!
 
Perhaps you can get a loupe with you or ask in the store to see whether the girdle was cheated.

I was smart enough to ask for a loupe, and we looked at the girdle together last week, and they said that it was a very nice girdle, very appropriate for the stone, and too much thinner would be prone to chipping (does this sound like BS?)...they also believe in that "brilliance'' stuff so that might be why my spread is smaller...admittedly, much more so than ANY other diamond i''ve looked at in this size/range of prices, it is mega sparkly (which is why we keep going back)....and i even took it out in natural light and it was the same. :)

there are NO inclusions or anything weird, even visible with the loupe, so that''s fun! :)

i don''t think i''m quite there to be able to know the exact difference between the girdles, but my saleslady genuinely IS nice, it seems, and not pushy or weird and understands how important this is to me.

maybe when i get it, i''ll get it appraised independently, and then if tehre is a problem i''ll use the 30 day return policy?
 
The specs on this stone look fine. Medium-slightly thick girdle is absolutely fine. A normal 1 carat stone should be about 6.5, so this is facing up just fine.

If anything they aren''t cheating you through the girdle, but the huge premium LOL! Some want the blue box and this is fine though. The stone looks great. Have no worries and enjoy your upgrade!!!

it is true: very thin girdle increases the risk of chipping especially in prong-settings. Bezel setting is safer choice for thin girdles.
 
Forgive my ignorance... but I thought Tiffany only went down to H color?

I think the stone is fine too and don''t think Tiffany''s is cheating you all the girdle. Lot''s of threads here on Tiffany cuts and they are still amoung some of the best out there although many are not the superideals that Pricescopers like to find. I''m sure the stone and ring will be stunning!!
 
I don''t think a "slightly thick" girdle is anything to freak about at the last minute. If you want a Tiffany stone/ring: go for it. Or, if for some reason you don''t like this particular stone WHEN YOU SEE IT ... wouldn''t they have others similar size/price range??

If you''re interested in the Lucida -- I saw a 1.2? carat, H, VVs1 on ebay today for a buy it now price of about 9K. But that''s in Portland, OR. Looked authentic though with papers.

Bottom line: you don''t get everything in life ... if you want a SUPER IDEAL cut diamond, you must choose a Tiffany replica setting ... to get the Tiffany setting, you have to trust that their diamonds are IDEAL enough. Which 99% of people probably would say is true! It''s easy to get caught in an over-analytic vortex when it comes to e-ring shopping but I have to say that for the "layman" ... Tiffany is usually a safe/excellent bet.

as for the lucida, that cut looks awful on my finger, and anything above a 1 looks somewhat ostentatious (i''m in my early 20s and look sixteen, lol)...we went in today, and got my ring!!! it is GORGEOUS! i forgot why we kept going back in the first place! it all looks really nice on my finger, super sparkly, really well cut (from what i can tell) and great with the matching simple tiffany band - a lovely keepsake that i enjoy having on my hand at all times and can''t wait to pass down to my son or son-in-law in thirty years to give to their wife to be (if she wants it). it looks just like the picture in the advertisements! :)

i am STOKED, fiance is stoked, ring is awesome, fears allayed by y''all, i have a reason to get tons of manicures now, and will post pictures tomorrow after my bachelorette party tonight - of course, i''m leaving the ring home!!!! :)

ps - anyone looking for a tiffany engagement ring - they have a fantastic program called the TTA. we only randomly found out about it, i believe on a forum complaining about tiffany rings, lol - they don''t really advertise it. if your credit qualifies, you only have to immediately pay 20% of the cost of the ring, and then you can take the ring home, but pay the rest interest-free over the next six months. we''re doing it this way, so our money can still earn its interest in our savings account for a few more months before being sent in to the blue box factory! :) :) :)
