Hey guys, I am able to purchase an unused, but secondhand, E-ring from Tiffany''s. I originally was going to buy a loose diamond and have a custom jeweler friend of mine from London make the ring. However, I found a ring through a friend of a friend who had his engagement called off many years ago and was planning on resetting the ring but now needs the cash for a business. The Tiffany''s valuation report from 2003 says the ring is worth 33,700. The polish and symmetry of the ring is good/good. Do you think 15K is a fair price for the ring? Also, I have a GIA report number, can I look this up myself? I think it would be prudent to use an escrow service and have the ring taken in for a formal re-valuation...any recommendations?

Thanks for your help!

If you can authenticate all of the details, 15K sounds like a very good price. But DO definitely take it to an appraiser before you agree to anything! I don''t have any recs for an escrow service, but I wish you much luck (and hope you come back to post pictures - I love the Lucida) ....

Circe, the ring has arrived with all documents...my only question is do you know haw to calculate the cut on this cut...I cannot find anywhere online that gives the ideal dimensions of this cut! So to summarize:

I am getting a:

Cut: Tiffany Lucida, Platinum band
Color: D
Clarity: VVS2
Carat 1.73

Good polish and symmetry ring in excellent (been worn once condition) for 15K....seems reasonable, no?

I have recently been doing a lot of research on the Lucida because I am replacing the Lucida I originally had, and unfortunately lost.

This ring is a steal!

For comparison: My original Lucida was .89 carats, D color, VVS1, platinum band. We bought it in 2001 for $11,700. As of last week, the exact same ring now costs $14,300.

I was at Tiffany in NY on Friday and saw a 1.08 Lucida, F, platinum; I think it was IF or VVS1. It was tagged $26,600. If you have any doubt of the bargain you just got, just go to Tiffany and see some comparable rings.

The 2003 valuation report is surely out of date at this point, and the ring is almost definitely worth more than the $33K report.

I just bought a used replacement Lucida that is a 1.15, E, VVS2, platinum for a little over $10K. I dropped it off at Tiffany tonight for a new valuation report. It takes two weeks and will cost $200, but is well worth it so you know how much to insure it for.

Congratulations on the ring!

I have a lucida as well and if that ring is authentic, then $15k would definitely be a steal. I don''t think that you''ll find ideal diameters online for it as it''s a tiffany patent cut. I''d leave it in to Tiffanys and get an updated valuation.
