I posted earlier today asking some advice about working with the different vendors I''ve read so much about here. After reading I decided to give ERD a call and work with them first to see if they can find me (well us, but I get to wear it) a stone as lovely as the ones on here. I''m looking for a 1.7-2.2 ct Cushion in G-F color, VS2-SI1, and about a 1.1 ratio. I talked to Gary and some of the first questions he asked were about the setting. We''re pretty sure we want to set it in a 3 stone. He started talking about sizes and maybe cushions and I had no idea what to tell him. So I have some questions for you all out there.

MMM I Love (with a capital L) your 3 stone cushion. I saw in a post that you originally considered getting a thinner setting. Any particular reason why you decided not to?

I tend to like much smaller side stones but Gary was talking in the .5 ct range. Would .3''s or .25''s so look way too small? I''ve had a hard time finding pictures with large centers and smaller sides. If anyone knows of some please share. Especially if they''re cushions.

Also, any thoughts as far as cushion sides vs. round brilliants with 3 prongs?

Widgets 3 stone is just lovely and delicate, and I''ve loved some other Leon work I''ve seen on here. The claw prongs are to die for. Is he outrageous for work with no pave (I want to keep it very simple), or do you all think having ERD set it would work just as well as I don''t need platinum?

As for color how far would you venture off of the center? Will it make a difference that the sides will be much smaller and would that change the answer about color variance?

Thank you guys so much for all your help! You''ve given me the confidence to jump into this project.

Welcome!

Leon will only make whole pieces in platinum (he seems to only use gold to set yellow and pink diamonds respectively) as far as I know, but his prices for stuff without pave are quite reasonable. That being said, ERD just did my custom ring for me and did a FABULOUS job. So without hesitation I recommend them.

I''d prefer to see cushion sidestones with a cushion center personally, but I think the sizes are up to you. They are just two different looks, so I would get out there and try some on if possible.

As for color, I would trust Gary and Mark''s eyes. They are the experts around here.

I like cushions with cushions or with halfmoons, personally. I also like smaller sidestones. It depends on spread but I would think about 4 mm give or take would be large enough.

I have a wierd question. Has anyone ever used a chunky faceted round stone in a three stone around here? I''m not even sure what type of stone I''d be looking for to be both chunky and round. Maybe an OMB that''s round or a european? My thought is that these might satisfy my liking for the round three prong (so it looks sort of triangular but not a trillion) while not distracting from the charm of the cushion.

Neatfreak your response made me think a min and go to a jewelery store after work today (like that''s a hardship

). It''s made me think that the contrast of a chunky facet cushion with a RB might look out of place or distract from the cushion, which I don''t want. I hadn''t really thought about that before.

Oh and btw I''m thinking three stone instead of solitaire because I tend to think solitaires look lonely on my finger. Although Boston Jeff''s has made me rethink it countless times lately.

Well, my 2 ct cushion will have 0.3 ct cushions on each side (and channel set princesses in the band). I wanted a 3 stone, but then fell in love with this setting.

That said, they are quite small in comparison, but that''s what I wanted. I saw 0.75 and thought that was too big. Moremoremores is a 2.1 center with 0.51 on each side. So if you like that look I''d go with similar sides (perhaps 0.4-0.5 depending upon the center size you choose).

Also, I don''t see any profile shots of moremoremores ring, but it appears that all 3 stones are set very close to the same height. Having the center sit up higher can also make it pop.

I suggest you go the jewelery store and look at 3 stones. Determine which ratios you like for side sides and also how high you''d like the center set.

I LOVE cushions and can''t wait to see yours (or mine finished for that matter

Oh, I like cushions with half moons too! (The ring in this photo also has bullets.) *Drool*
