Thoughts on this OEC?

Hi All,

I need some opinions on this OEC. The crown angle seems a bit shallow & there aren't any additional details on the cert regarding that. Adam said it was an outstanding stone & indeed, it does look like it. I've recently had a pretty bad experience with a vendor over a modern round so now I'm considering going back to a vintage stone, & this one fits in my budget comfortably.

Here's the GIA cert info:
OP (no fluoro)
2.14 ct.
VS-1
Table: 48
Depth: 61
Symmetry: Fair
Polish: Good
8.21 x 8.34 x 5.05

Thanks all for any input you might have.

I've already reached out to Grace & Erica as well. If you have any ideas on other stones, please let me know. Colour wise, OP in a Vintage is as low as I'd like to go. Under $10k would be great too. ;-)

Hi Judy,

You know, I have found it really hard to tell if facets go dark on Adam's 360 videos. Like all the stones look so beautiful on the 360 but you can't see what the facets are really doing if that makes sense. That being said, it looks very pretty. I think if you like what you see then it warrants sending for it and playing around with it a bit. And in all honesty, all the vendor videos (in their various styles) for me personally, just tell me if it's a contender and then I need to verify with my own eyes.

What do you think about it?

P.S. I'm so sorry about your bad vendor experience :(2. I've had those too and they are no fun.

P.P.S I have seen in real life an OEC with a shallow crown angle and it performed beautifully so unless that is an immediate turn off, don't discount it!

The crown angle does look relatively shallow for an OEC. But unless you desire the look of a "puffy crown" (which usually is only obvious in profile) a low crown is not necessarily a detriment. For example, low crowns can mean larger spread. My 2.25 carat OEC is 7.9mm x 8.2mm (smaller than this 2.14) because of a steeper crown angle. A shallower crown can also produce a brighter and whiter face up look. Shallower crowns, however, don't often produce as much fire as puffier crowns if this matters to you. The faceting of this stone looks nice. You should look at this in person if you think OP is still okay with you (like I mentioned, the shallow crown will likely help lighten the color face up). Love Affaire Diamonds, Jewels by Grace, Guilded Lane, My Diamond Zone, are other places to look for old cuts.

Beautiful facet pattern and I think a very pleasing shape overall ... looks like it could well be a winner!

I do trust Adam as a vendor and he doesn't throw around descriptors like "outstanding" without basis. As he describes this stone as outstanding, and the video shows nothing to its detriment, and it has a GIA cert ... to my way of thinking, if you have interest in the stone and it's within your budget, I'd strongly recommend having it sent to you loose for your examination.

And, keep in mind, since each vintage stone has its own personality, even if the stone can be objectively/subjectively described as outstanding, it still may not be what your eyes want but you'll get closer to figuring out your preferred facet patterns or table/crown/depth etc.

Good luck with your search!

@soxfan consigned her OEC flower/cluster ring with Erica. Have you seen it?

I think it looks beautiful, bright and lively, worth taking a look if you like what you're seeing imo!

Hi Ladies,

Thank you so very much for taking the time to give me some food for thought. :-) I would take a chance on that stone but Adam has a 10 day inspection period which I had missed. I thought it was a month. I'm not able to get to the US within those 10 days to view it. You are all so right in that an old cut needs to be seen. Adam said there was another interested party & I hope that she loves it. The more I looked at it the more I wanted to take a chance but the 10 days isn't going to work. I basically need a month. I told him that I'd reach out closer to the middle of October. If you cross the border too often, it's not a good thing. :-/ I don't want to be flagged.

Hi Whitewave, I did see her cluster ring, which is absolutely stunning. I hadn't reached out to Erica about that one specifically but I did reach out to her. I have a setting for my future stone already & I dont think Soxfan is looking to sell the stone separately so early in her sale. If I'm wrong, let me know. But I think I run into the same problem, that Erica has a short window for inspection, 7 days.

I've also got my eyes open for a modern round so whichever comes up first, I'm open. Love both types of diamonds. I have to say I favour the old cuts but dang, they take more work than the generic modern ones to buy. When I say "work" I mean sanity. You need nerves of steel. :cool2:

I'll just have to sit on my hands & wait. I'm not so good at that but it's either that or I lose sleep. LOL And I'm sure there have been plenty of us losing sleep over these sparkly rocks. :rolleyes2::lol-2:
