Thoughts on this oec gypsy ring?

Greetings! A local antiques/jewelry store has this ring I am considering purchasing. The setting is antique (engraved with a date in 1931) and given the type of setting the exact size is unknown, but I believe it to be about 1.5ct. The diamond looks very white to me (the setting is platinum and I don’t detect any color to the stone) but it does have some very small black inclusions. I can’t come to ground on how bothered I am by them. I would not call the stone eye clean but on the other hand these inclusions ARE quite small.

I’d appreciate any though on value etc! 30A38921-5101-4FA2-A5BC-854DB5151C9B.jpegC9FAD997-5D7F-42BF-A9CA-A03C1A8A0E99.jpeg2B5A8BF5-938C-436A-9CEC-FB9C7637A655.jpegC9FAD997-5D7F-42BF-A9CA-A03C1A8A0E99.jpeg30A38921-5101-4FA2-A5BC-854DB5151C9B.jpeg

The pattern looks almost like a transitional to me. I think it’s pretty! Do you mind sharing how much the vendor wants for it?

I see the appeal. I LOVE a gypsy ring. Inclusions don't tend to bother me personally - I am honestly not sure I am crazy about the cut - I can't quite make out the pattern. It would really depend on the price!

I think that's a fair characterization. The date is from 1931 (engraved) and the table didn't look super high to me like earlier OECs. He is asking 5200 for it. I think the cut is nice -- it has a very flowery look to it. I just keep thinking maybe I can do better? But usually this guy has really great buys. He has a shop in a really crappy old strip mall but he has a ton of gold and old diamonds!

It seems to have a larger table and perhaps a shallow depth? For me I would probably pass, but you are the one seeing it in person ... is there a return period so perhaps you can take a few days to see it on your hand in different lighting environments etc?

The depth I measured as 4.4mm, so assuming I am right about it being about 7.3-7.4mm diameter, I think it's appropriate

Here is a certed comp. It's EGL so maybe not a GIA D, but an F? I'm not an OEC expert-this is just so you have a price comparison :)

The cut seems unusual almost as if it lacks some of the more intricate faceting I’ve seen on other old cuts. I can’t quite put my finger on it. I like the gypsy setting.

Are you sure it is plat? That would make for a super heavy ring in that style and is not common.

I can’t attest to value since we don’t have much to go on except that it’s around 1.5cts and maybe SI2-I1(?) but I would pass. Like @marymm said, it has a very large table and just a lot of mushiness. No crisp faceting and no light play with the facets taking turns going on and off.

I love this style but I can't seem to tell where the stone stops and the mounting begins. If it looks like that IRL, then I think that element is unappealing.

What @LilAlex said. I can’t tell what I’m seeing.

I can’t help you with ‘value’, I’m sorry.

But can you show a side view?
Are there spaces between the mounting and diamond like it’s a nonagon or a decagon?

Honestly I’d be a no especially after looking at the video. There’s no under table petals, too much of the facets are just on and there’s no twinkly contrast.

I agree with @marymm ....large table and probably shallow. I do not see any mushiness. Facets look well defined but it does not look
to have much light play. Somewhat static in the video.

I'm wondering like others if it is not round...that upper left-hand corner (in the photos) looks odd to me but may just be the photo?

Personally, I would pass. In the video, the stone is mushy, without nice facets and looks visibly included from what I could see. It was a dead stone and not attractive to my eyes. You can recreate this look and find a nicer stone.

It looks like an eye at the first look. However, its cute and feels right to be in you finger. I don't have any gypsy jewelry, how I wish I can have one.

No. To me it looks like big single cut diamond with poor clarity.

I would definitely avoid this one. I think the stone looks poorly cut.

Thank you! This is helpful

no spaces, so impossible to tell if it's truly round. the metal goes right up over the edge of the diamond, unevenly

Thanks everyone for your input. There is something about this ring that I find very charming, but I think for $5000 I need to be more clearly "yes!" about it.

Think on it. I imagine it isn't going anywhere.

Sometimes I like what others would consider...ahem...weird or (to them) downright unattractive diamonds.

My point is, if you have fallen in love, maybe you can negotiate a better price you feel comfortable with, especially know that this diamond isn't the best cut. I bet a great bench could clean up the bezel so it's a bit more defined.
