Thoughts on this Ering/wedding band by VC

This forum has been so helpful. I have learned so much about diamonds and designers and what brought me to VC and his beautiful craftsmanship. Both my ering and wedding band are from him however it wasn’t until I started shopping in stores for wedding bands that I noticed the band on my ering always seems dull compared to bands in stores. I figured it was just due to it being dirty but having since received my wedding band from VC and cleaning my ering, I now know it’s due to my ering just having more metal and showing less of the melee diamonds. It’s starting to really bother me after my mom even pointed it out. Thoughts? Has anyone had this happen to them? I reached out to VC to see what he has to say

As far as the rings, I think this is really a matter of wear. You’ve worn the engagement ring for a lot longer and a lot more skin oil and grime has gotten into it compared to the band.
Other than that, I’ve used the exact same assortment of diamonds, the same technique of setting the diamonds and even the type of metal.”

I understand the wear and tear and oil buildup but to me that doesn’t address why the metal on the prongs holding all the melee seems to be significantly more on my E-ring.

Would love everyone’s thoughts as I’m definitely not an expert.

Since they are hand forged and not made from a mold, I would expect some variance between the two. I don’t there’s really any way to get two exactly alike unless you did cast.

Hi! I'm also no expert, and FWIW I think your set is beautiful!
If there's anything I notice, it's that the prongs on your ering melee are ever, ever, so slightly heftier than your band. My best guess though would be that it's that way by design because your ering also needs to accommodate for and balance/protect the weight of the head holding the halo and your center stone.

It is hard to thoroughly clean pave rings ... what is your cleaning process? do you have an ultrasonic?

Based on your photos -- which on my monitor show as slightly blurry/grainy, and seems to show the new WB straight on but the ER at a slight angle -- I would not say the ER pave shows significantly more metal -- I note also the ER has a cathedral design, as compared to the WB.

It seems you've had your ER for well over a year, and the WB is brand new. Perhaps it would be worth it to you to ship both rings to VC for a thorough cleaning and even a quick re-polish of the ER, so that both rings match more to your eyes?

Your ring looks to be finely made as well as durable.

I think the lesser sparkle is due to the angle of the stones. They face more out than up as they march up the shoulders of the ring so the sparkle would be directed outward instead of straight up toward your eye.

I’m not going to be much help because I love your set! I see a bling fest and I don’t see the metal. Your set looks so balanced and beautiful. In my opinion, the rings look fantastic together.

Thank you. Their definitely is more metal holding the melee in place but I will try to think of it being more secure when I get annoyed that it’s not as sparkly

Thank you. Every when I look at the bottoms or side where the angle is the same, the sparkle is less due to the metal prongs covering so much of the melee. I will try not to let it bother me so much but I guess I though hangforged meant more delicate and less metal showing. Thanks.

Thanks. I am going to wait until I am in LA to drop off the rings for a good cleaning. When I look at them closely and through a loupe you can see that there is so more metal. When I got the ring I always thought the melee was less sparkly than my friends melee rings so at least now I know why. At least i know it’s durable though

I looked at the other rings on his site and the metalwork here doesn't look different. It's not a mistake, just part of the craftsmanship and design.

Lots of people fall out of love with their settings and get new ones but I hope yours gets new life from a good cleaning. Good luck to you!!!

So they're supposed to match? They look different to me. I'd send them in for a polish and cleaning. The prongs should be the same on both rings if they are a set. Either way, you have beautiful rings!

Your rings look beautiful! The workmanship looks very good, clean, and tight. I actually thought the extra metal was smart to avoid the bands from eating into each other with raw diamond edges. I think it just comes down to the setting style and personal preference. Maybe you are looking for a different style with more diamond showing and less metal? Anyway for what it's worth, I love your set!

I don’t think the difference is due to having marginally more metal covering the Ering melee (which - yes, I can see as well). I think it’s pretty much what VC said - the stones aren’t as squeaky clean as the ones in the new band. In a few months/years your band will look the same.

I assume neither your Ering nor your band have azures (holes through the metal, through which the underside of each melee is accessible)?

What I see is that, to me, the band seems to be made more delicately. I do agree that the e-ring does have more metal. You can ask your jeweler to professionally clean your e-ring to see if that makes a difference. To be honest, it would bother me - the pave on the e-ring does not look as delicate. I understand the security idea behind the extra metal but how much metal does one need to hold a tiny stone.
