Greetings everyone,

First I want to thank everyone for all the excellent information. Now I really need some help.

I''m considering purchasing the following diamond and would like to hear your thoughts.

Shape: Round
Carat weight: 1.34
Cut grade: good
Color: D
Clarity: SI1
Certificate: GIA

Depth: 59.6%
Table: 59.0%
Polish: very good
Symmetry: very good
Girdle: medium
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 7.12-7.18 x 4.26mm

I haven''t started negotiating yet but was quoted at $8,600

All thoughts much appreciated.

Regards,

Michael

The cut is only "Good", and the table is a lot larger than what I prefer. I think most people ghere would recommend "Ideal" or "Excellent" cuts and will steer you away from a "Good" cut. You can do MUCH better! Plug in your parameters here and see what you come up with:
https://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

Also, read the tutorials to find out what you should be looking for...

I would plug in the numbers to the above link Impatient one Provided for you. If it scores higher than a 2 you might want to weed it out.

Also, here is a quick tool to find the best stone http://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx You need to select Excellent Excellent for cut.

Welcome to Pricescope by the way

you are going to need crown and pavillion angles to analyze this stone with the HCA. most people on this forum are going to tell you to get an excellent cut diamond. this diamond is going to be nice and white, and looks like it will face up a nice size and if those are your main goals, and you like a "good" cut diamond, then go for it. have you been able to compare very goods, excellents and goods side by side? that may give you a better idea of what you are looking for.

I think cut is probably the most important thing in a diamond IMHO. I would sacrifice color for a better cut diamond. I''m in the same position you are atm and looking to spend about 10k.

Michael, you're doing a little better. But your search will be so much easier if you limit your potential stones to GIA Excellent cut or AGS Ideal. Even within GIA excellent there are better stones that others. But if you start with excellent cut, you'll come up with much better stones.

I just checked the last stone on the cut advisor (found above under tools), and it scored:

light return very good

fire good

scintillation good

spread very good

total 3.7

Experts usually recommend diamonds that are around a score of 2 or lower, and you want excellent for the first three factors and spread is often very good even on the best stones.

Nup, scores 3.7 on HCA, would weed that out too. You really should aim for a cut grade of excellent for GIA graded stones, and then use the HCA to see how they score. You use this tool to weed out the no-so good ones (over 2 in general), and then try to get an IS image.

Keep posting - we will find something. Are you set on buying from a B&M store? We could suggest some killer stones from online vendors and you will save $$$$.

Thanks so much for the feedback...I''m finding the world of diamonds can be a rough place. We looked at some really lousy stones in Beverly Hills today before heading down to Oscars. It just seemed that the stones in Oscars were jus so much more visually appealing. I thought the above stone really sparkled and thought the price was quite good. If I do jump up to Excellent will the price jump significantly? I am definatly not stuck on a B&M store but realy enjoy seeing the stones before I purchase. I would love to see some suggestions from an online store. I also like the fact of saving $$$ :)

Thanks again for the help.
