I am considering trading in my 2 carat H SI2 for this diamond because the inclusions in the SI2 bother me. The diamond looks great in person, and scores a 1.3 on the HCA, but I am a little concerned that it only received a Very Good cut rating from GIA. Here are the specs:

2.02 I VS2
8.13x8.21x4.90
Cut: VG
Polish:VG
Symmetry: VG
no flouresence
table: 59.0%
depth 60.0%
crown angle 33.5
pavilion angle 40.4
girdle is med - slightly thick faceted
no culet

This is the other diamond I am considering. It is GIA Excellent, and also looks great in person, but only scores a 4.7 on HCA? Also, it is about $2300 more than the first stone.

2.07 I vs2
8.22x8.28x5.04
Cut:EX
Polish: Ex
Sym:EX
no flour
no culet
Table: 58%
depth: 61.1%
crown angle 34.5
pavilion angle: 41.1

Any thoughts on why the first stone only received a VG cut rating or why the GIA excellent performed so poorly? Opinions on which stone to pick would be greatly appreciated. To my eye, they both looked very similar, although the first appears to be a little more white. This is all very overwhelming!

The first is too shallow to get GIA EX, and the second is too deep to get <2

What is the PA of stone 2? With 41.1 I get 2.6 and GIA reports round 41.1 to 41.2; PA=41.4, HCA=4.7

NB, I entered the #''s on the second one again, that sounded like too bad of a score. I got this, still not under 2, but not quite as bad.

Selected: 61.1% depth, 58% table, 34.5° crown angle, 41.1° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Very Good
Scintillation Very Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 2.6 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

As Julie said, the PA is too deep. Punch in a 40.9 and you get a 1.7. Or, if you switched the CA to 33.5, it gets you a 1.9. There has to be a balancing act between the crown and pavillion angles. Hope this helps.

Id pass on both there are better diamonds out there,,,
The first is a shallow/shallow and Id agree with GIA on it, not a top stone.
The second Id agree with the hca on their are better stones out there.
