Does this look like a good diamond? Again, its from Blue Nile (b/c I can get a discount on the setting).

$3,124
Round Brilliant
0.84, F, SI1
Table: 56%
Depth: 61%
Girdle: Thin to medium
Symmetry/Polish: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Culet: None
6.09 x 6.13 x 3.73
HCA: 1.3 (Crown - 34%; Pavillion - 41%)
Clarity Characteristics: Cloud

P.S. Thanks to Lorelei for mentioning putting diamonds on hold in my previous post...I didn''t know one could do that.

Hi jly!

Glad that was of help to you! The diamond shows great potential, have you ordered an Idealscope image for it? Also check the cloud inclusion isn't impacting performance, rare in SI1 but best to check with the vendor - and check it is eyeclean also. For completeness, what are the star and lower girdle facet percentages too please? These will be on the report where you got the angles etc.

ETA - missed that it was from BN, in that case an Idealscope image won't be forthcoming as they don't provide them, so scratch that idea.

Ditto what Lorelei said...

And on an entertaining side note... My sister''s name is Julie Bly so obviously I see JLYBLY77, make the correlation and think "Man... If my sister''s buying a diamond from Blue Nile "because she can save money on the setting" there''s going to be hell to pay

I can''t figure it out on the diagram in the report. I think the star facet % may be 50% (I can''t read it clearly) and the lower girdle facet % may be 75%. I''m not sure if I''m reading the report correctly.

Here is a link to the report:

I will check with the BN rep regarding the cloud.

Thanks for both your advice.
Yes you are, well done!

It looks promising by the numbers but thats really all we can tell without images, but BN do have a good return policy in the rare chance you were unhappy, also check carefully that the diamond is eyeclean and the cloud isn''t impacting brilliance.

If you are considering GOG, I say you talk to them about their consignment services. I think it is very fair.

Thanks for your help. I found another BN diamond:

$3,027
0.85, F, SI2
Table: 56%
Depth: 61.5%
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick (faceted)
Symmetry/Polish: Excellent
Fluorescence: None
Culet: None
6.06 x 6.11 x 3.74
HCA: 0.7 (Crown - 34.5%; Pavillion - 40.6%)
Star Facet: 50%
Lower Girdle Facet: 75%
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal

BN Link:
http://www.bluenile.com/round-diamond-1-carat-or-less-ideal-cut-f-color-si2-clarity_LD01527466?__fun_frm=b#

(Sorry, but I couldn''t link directly...for some reason, it wasn''t working out this time)

I''m waiting for the eyeclean reports on both diamonds, which should be coming either Monday or Tuesday. Assuming both are eyeclean per their report (which is only top down view), which diamond would be the better choice? For inclusions, is a "crystal" better than having a "cloud" and would be less noticable, if viewed from other angles and sides.

Thanks again for everyone''s help!

Yes this one shows potential if eyeclean, as to ' eyecleanliness' if you don't want to see anything from any angle make sure your BN rep knows this so they can check this for you, however I would go for the original diamond in preference if eyeclean.

Prefer the first stone.

Well, I found out the first diamond, 0.84/F/SI1, is eyeclean
1.gif
, so I nixed the request on the second, since the consensus seems to be that the first is preferable.

However, now I''m debating on the setting. I was initially leaning towards a simple solitaire setting, here: http://www.bluenile.com/solitaire-diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_2, but then I saw this one (the petite pave cathedral): http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-platinum_9917, and like it too.

If I keep the 0.84 diamond, would it look too big on the Petite Pave cathedral setting. Would I be better off with a slightly smaller diamond, around 0.75 or so?

I saw this diamond:
0.75/G/SI1/Round
Ideal cut
Excellent symmetry/polish
5.83 x 5.85 x 3.58
Thin/Medium girdle-faceted 3%
No fluorescence/culet
56% table
61.3% depth
34.5% crown
40.8% pavillion
55% star facet
80% lower girdle facet
Cloud/feather
HCA: 1.2 EX/EX/EX/VG

Am waiting on an eyeclean report on this diamond as well.

I also want to stay within budget, preferably around $3,500-$3,600 (or a little more) (we don''t want to go crazy and overboard on this ring).

Thanks again for all your help.
