Thoughts on Ritani setting for old family diamond??

Hi all,
I'm new and must say how much I've enjoyed visiting this site - everyone is SO helpful!
I need help chosing a setting for my boyfriend's family diamond. I've been told it's a transitional cut or a swiss cut - it's round and somewhat squat with a visible culet and it's about 1ct. Sorry I don't have exact specs - it's still with a family member.
Thoughts on this ritani setting for it? Will the old diamond and round brilliant micropave suit each other? Any thoughts or opinions are welcome!

It's a VERY pretty setting (neatfreaks got it) and it suits cushions well... so I think that it would be very lovely with your stone. My only concern would be the stone's color. As it is an old cut, the color may (just may) be significantly lower than the ritani melee and the bright white platinum... especially since it's an older cut with a culet and likely to show it's color. So the setting may (just MAY) make your diamond look yellow.

I think the first set should be to get that diamond unmounted and appraised. If it is lower color (LMO) then a similar setting but with warmer antique (single or rose cut) melee in white gold from an antique settings craftsman like Singlestone would be your best bet... you'd get the look you want while showing off the diamonds unique beauty.

Gypsy - thanks so much for your thoughts! I''m lucky that BF has two gemologists in the family and they both think it would work. I''ll be receiving the stone soon and hope to look at it next to the Ritani so I can makeup my own mind. I''m leaving it mounted for now because I''m afraid I won''t be able to get a Ritani ring otherwise (from what I''ve read on here).
I like your idea - I''ve actually been to single stone and love his stuff. If the ritani doesn''t mesh well with it I''ll likely be doing something similar to your suggestion.
Any thoughts on brilliant cut pave next to a stone that''s not as sparkly as a rb?

I saw that ring - very gorgeous! I went to Ari''s shop and looked at some pieces. If the ritani doesn''t suit the stone I will probably do something along the lines of his stuff. I think I want something with somewhat classic lines that a band could sit next to so that is also coloring my preferences. I''ve also seen some great things at 23rdstreetjewelers.com but I think they''ll probably come in over budget, alas!

Seems like you have a nice budget for the style you want though... which is good. Keep us updated... and with pics when you have them.

Well, we''ve got two people in the business who can help us ;) That''s one of the reason''s I''d love to find something from a designer vs. custom made. I''m also not positive if we''ll move in the next few years so I find it appealing to go with something like ritani or memoire so that I could take it to a store just about anywhere.
It''ll all depend on how it looks together though! If the match isn''t right I think I''ll be back at square one...

A PSer named Morticia set her heirloom OEC in a Ritani Endless Love setting and it looked gorgeous. There is a thread on it but I couldn't find any close up shots - I think it would look lovely! (I would find out the color of your stone though, just to be sure it's not really, really different than the color of the melee Ritani uses.)

Any other ideas from the great minds here? Could most jewelers work with single cut stones or french cut or is it better to go through a place like single stone? Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
 
if it were me, i''d probably try to find a real antique setting to place your old stone into. don''t know how difficult it would be, but there was one deco posted on ebay that was part of the skinner auctions that was just gorgeous. it ended up selling for 1K. when i was in chicago last year I found an antique setting as well and bought it for a great price. i ended up having to return it b/c it couldn''t be sized down to my size but there are real antique settings out there. part of the charm of the antique stone to me would be having the old setting to go with it if possible. ari could probably help you at least look and hitting any other estate jewelers in your area might be helpful too.

good luck though, sounds like you have a gorgeous stone and i''m sure it will look beautiful in whatever setting you choose.

I''ve been debating what to do and I thought I would like to find an old setting but I like the idea of being able to wear a band next to it. I really wish that we had the original setting! I''m so torn between finding something old and somthing new! I appreciate your input :)

I personally think an older stone would look fabulous in a ritani setting. I think the tiny melee and thin shank would really compliment it well. As far as jewelers go, you might also want to check out Peter Norman in Brentwood (on San Vicente). He has some very beautiful hand made platinum settings...not cheap though. The price would probably be slightly cheaper than 23rd street.
 
Thanks so much, kcoursolle, I really appreciate it! I adore the stuff at 23rd street but I think it''ll come in over budget. One of my favorites there is very, very close to the look of the Ritani. I''ll definitely check out your other recommendation as well. I *love* all of the old and reproduction pieces, I''m trying to strike a balance between something delicate and timeless/classic that will compliment the stone well.
Someday when my ship comes in I''d love a few bands from 23rd to pair with it ;)

there are plenty of estate rings that allow for a wedding band to be worn next to them. I do understand though if you want more of a perfectly flush fit like the Ritani''s do. My grandmother used to wear a huge filigree ring with a thin eternity band, didn''t match at all and looked stunning together. I''m sure you''ll find what you like though..

I have been given small fingers of the short variety so I''m trying to work with what I got ;) I''m also very lucky to have two of BF''s family members in the jewelry business who could help us out. I''m afraid without their discounts our small budget wouldn''t be able to go so far! I''d love to have something done at 23rd st or single stone - that might push off engagment another decade :) Unfortunately BF and I are in the arts so my ''champagne wishes'' are a little more difficult to fulfill! Boo!
