Hello folks
35.gif

I''ve been lurking around the forums for ages now, absorbing all sorts of useful advice. Now that the time when I''ll actually purchase a diamond and setting is getting closer I thought I''d be more actively involved and start asking some questions of my own.

So here''s the first question:

If Flight A leaves New York travelling East at 900mph and Flight B leaves London travelling West at 750mph, what are the chances you''ll get through security in time to make either flight?

Once you''ve answered that here''s one about diamonds and rings:

What are your thoughts on buying an engagement setting online, without having set eyes on it?

I''m looking for a design similar to this one, but in platinum, with a few changes:

Ring with pave

I haven''t found anything I like here in London (plus I''d rather get better value for money by buying online from the US) so I''m considering getting the ring made to order once I''ve got the diamond. Possibly at WhiteFlash (who seem to be well respected on these forums)? I''m just concerned about receiving something that doesn''t match what I''ve seen on the screen.

Any thoughts?

WF is well known for doing quality custom work. And the ring you posted seems VERY doable to me. I think you''ll be able to get this done pretty easily.

Thanks Jenn. Any thoughts on the screen vs real world difference?

I''m wanting to avoid the "Oh, it''s much bigger/smaller/wider than I thought it would be" scenario.

hi,

i''m no expert but from what i''ve read and seen, ps vendors will show you pics of the custom ring (CAD, wax molds) before you give the final OK so that should give you some assurance. also, if you check out MP''s thread, you can read how his custom design process went. this is the link to the final product:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-mark-t-custom-harry-winston-inspired-engagement-ring-that-allows-for-a-flush-fit-with-a-wedding-b.80583/

he has a gorgeous ring by the way. soo pretty.

I''m not an expert but I recommend getting quotes from others as well, such as Quest, GOG, ESD, Wink, ExcelDiamonds. According to folks here they all do great work and the prices for custom rings seem to vary across these online vendors. I went with Quest for an eternity ring. I hope to receive it today. So hopefully I''ll be able to speak with a little more experience shortly. I found it somewhat nerve racking but all these folks at the online jewelers seem to be very competent. Pete at Quest was great. I''ll be able to judge the result first hand shortly. I suspect you can''t go wrong with any of these folks.

You can always hop on a plane and come to NY to see the settings and stones to buy in person. ERD and GOG should be able to show you things in person if you contact them in advance and specify what you''re looking for. That way you can buy the stone, buy or order the setting that you like and they''ll ship it you. Plus, there are tons of other things to do NYC, so just make a mini vacation out of this.

Thanks for all the input. luckynumber7, I followed MP''s thread (and a similar one) with interest. It''s what made me consider getting the ring made over the ocean in the first place. Re-reading it has raised my confidence in the process.

Thanks for the additional vendor suggestions, dmus. I''ll be sure and get a couple of quotes before making a decision.

And believe me, baby monster, I thought long and hard about a trip across the Atlantic, but in the end a huge project at work has killed any chance of that. Pity really, since we had the trip to New York, DC, Boston, L.A. all planned. I was just going to find an excuse to slip away for a day or two to do my investigations.
