Here are the stats of a diamond I am considering locally:

GIA Certified Princess Cut
Carat: .71
Color: G
Clarity: SI1 (eye clean)
Depth: 73%
Table: 74%
Girdle : Thin to Slightly Thick
Symmetry: Good
Polish: Very Good
Flourescence: None

In a setting similar to this on BN http://www.bluenile.com/product_details.asp?oid=4782&page=1&col=1&row=1&pos=1&set_shape=

After talking to them a couple times, we have come to a price of $3000 including tax. Is this a fair price? I know without crown height and pavilion it''s not perfect, but at least give me a ball park of what you think.

Am I not asking the right questions? I''ve tried to get some thoughts on this twice with no replys. Is it that the price includes the setting? Both have crazy discounts, so I don''t know what the true "cost" of just the stone is. Here is another option that I''ve been looking at. http://www.jamesallen.com/products/item_58-879_build.asp?step=ItemComplete&cid=58

Maybe not that specific stone, but something comparable to that. Is it worth paying the extra $500 for a stone I''ve seen in person?

yes. the correct way to ask this question is with an accompanying picture.

When i was looking for our princess i used this page as a guideline -http://diamonds.pricescope.com/fnc1.asp with those numbers i could look for a stone within the right proportions to what i wanted, also the search button was a good friend to me i looked for everything regarding a princess, also advice given to me was princess stones are hard to judge by numbers and it would be best to see the stone first so if you can see the stone then thats what i would do or try to pick a stone with table and depth that fit into a better cut as the stone you mention is sitting as a fine cut but could still be a nice stone.

Hi RWV. I think you are asking the right Q''s!

I have a .70 princess cut and the loose diamond was $3,200 being an F and a VVS2.

Does your price include the setting? If so, I think its a great deal.

Hope this helps.

Yes, this does include the setting which "retails" for $850 or so, but probably real cost is more in the $400 range. It also includes tax. So the best I can figure is the stone is roughly $2400 maybe? The tag on the stone (it''s currently set in a solitare) has a tag of $4500! HA! goes to show much much their markup is. I have seen the stone, several times. It''s definitely eye clean, but I''ve only seen it in the store, I''ve stepped back from the counter so it''s not under the direct light over the display, but I still haven''t seen it in normal lighting conditions. I guess I haven''t seen enought diamonds to be able to look at it and know it''s a good cut. I don''t think it would fall under any "ideal" cut category, but I believe it''s probably in the "very good" range.

You know what though? Keep this in mind. My FI and I were looking at diamonds when we upgraded and I fell in love with one in a mall store that they said was an F SI2 at $2100. Long story short, FI wanted to stick with a jeweler that we were familiar with so we ended up with the stone I have now. I snuck into the same mall store and tried the one we *almost* bought next to my shining beauty and there was NO comparison. Thank you PS. I have also heard that they use IGI which is quite generous in their gradings of the rings as compared to GIA. I''m not sure if you are looking at a mall store or not. If you are not, just disregard this post! Haha. I tend to ramble...
