Hi All,

Im looking for something to make/buy, I just came across this stone. Ive never looked at old cuts, and i am very color conscious, so i look at very white stones, but there is something about this stone that i can't stop looking at! It looks almost blue!

It looks like it might be a little bigger than a usual 1ct (speaking from round brilliants... i know nothing about old cuts) but the color and life look interesting from the photo...

any thoughts?
thank you

Hi Sushi :wavey:

I enquired about this stone recently but decided not to go ahead. Here is a copy of the email I got back from Sarah (who was ever helpful as usual!) with some info and a video.

Hope this helps.

Hello Susan, This is an interesting stone! The size/price is quite appealing
if you can get over the glassy look of it. Here is a video:

Hi Susan,

Wow thank you!

actually after seeing the video, it isn't as "blue" as i thought. I don't know about OEC diamonds, so I'm not sure what you mean by glassy, but i can see a very big carbon spot in the middle... so its not for me..

So much to learn!!

Sushi

You are most welcome. :wavey:

If I was you, I would start another thread, tell the experts here what you would like, what your budget is etc and let them do their magic.
The PS'ers really know how to find a bargain! :appl:

Plus check out the preloved section as I think there might be a few good antique stones for sale there too!

Ps I look forward to your new purchase on SMTB!!!! ;))

Sushi,

That black spot in the middle may be the culet. At different places in the video, I see different dark spots, but if you're referring to what you see dead center toward the end of the video, that is the open culet.

thanks ladies!!

Well to be honest i wasn't looking for an oec stone, but i thought it looked so pretty in the photo i was interested. I loved that it looked blue! You're going to laugh, but I've actually spent the day looking at emerald cut pink morganites! I want to design a cocktail statement ring, but somehow this little sparkler caught my eye. I think ill go back to my morganite idea...

Im going to put my thinking cap on, speak to the boss (DH) and get back to everyone!

thanks again!

An "OMG" diamond seems like a cool new cut!

That is just good photography on GOG's part. A diamond will look like that sometimes, but not usually, and it won't be blue. It will be creamy or vanilla with an M color grade. If you really want COLOR then you need a colored gem! Diamonds only show color to the extent that they reflect environmental colors. As an aside, very tinted stones, like O-P and more tinted, tend to have a very chameleon effect where they change appearance and color dramatically with environmental colors. If you like a colored gem this might appeal to you a lot. Still, yellow/beige/cream is the dominant tone of the diamond material.

are diamonds in high colors like this the norm for old cut diamonds? I had the opportunity to buy a high colored solasfera but passed on it. it seems like a lot of these old cuts are high in color and it doesn't bother people

haha damn you autocorrect. maybe i should patent it! then create a gadget that says the OMG cut is the best, and confuse people even more... :)

yes i think a colored gem is the way to go. I have a beautiful shocking neon pink rubellite which i ADORE. And I'm also looking at a baby pink morganite, that i think would look very pretty with maybe a grey diamond halo.. possibly on rose gold... just playing at the moment!

Thanks for all the input for all my silly questions!

I think you mean a low color, not a high color. Low colors are J-Z, higher colors would be D-I.

Lower colored old cuts seem to face up fairly 'white' for their stated colors. They just reflect light differently than modern cuts. Also, some people prefer the lower colors because they are 'warm' or 'creamy' vs. 'cool' or 'white.'

I just bought an M OEC and omg I *LOVE* it.

Peopel refer to high and low color both ways Ruby, I dont think there is a standard :)) "high" could mean "high is tint" as well!

Anyways, old cuts tend to be more tinted because many old cuts that were less tinted were recut in past years into modern RBs. Also, less tinted rough is more rare anyways.

It is funny that Sarah at GOG said "if you can get over the glassiness". The optics of that stone are really nice and desired I think in an OMC. I call it "liquid" looking optics.

I adore the title of this thread. Someone should really start to market "OMG" branded stones!

I think I want an OMG diamond, too!

I just received my OEC pendant from BGD that I purchased from another PSer. It is a tinted stone but in the bezel setting it looks amazing in the sun. Sometimes the "idea" of owning a lower colour stone can get in the way of appreciating it for what it really is - a gorgeous fireball of light. Dont give up too soon sushi, if you'd like an OMC stone....

(or OEC / OMG!) :wink2:
