Hello all and thanks for being such a great resource! I currently have a 3/4 carat round diamond on a thin pave band as my engagement ring. My fiance and I have been talking about upgrading already as we originally wanted at least a carat and shrinkage set in quite soon for me. We recently looked at a 1.02 carat and I did see a size difference,. We were thinking of going to 1.1 or 1.25 if money allowed but from what I can see, it doesn''t seem like 1.1 would face up much bigger than a 1 although I am sure the 1.25 would. Maybe I should look at a 1.15? Any thoughts on this? I am thinking since he is going to be investing money once again then it should be a noticeable difference to us. So part of me wants to just wait until we can go up even larger and I should just be happy with what I have. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What are the specs on what you have now? You might be able to go a little bigger by going lower in clarity and/or color. Are you limited to an upgrade from your jeweler or are you able to purchase from anyone? Budget? Same setting?

You want an upgrade that is noticeable in size.

on what size ring?

I currently have a .76 G, SI2 (I was shocked it was that clarity as it is the cleanest SI2 I have seen). It is from the SA Gems Collection and was purchased out of state, though there is one local jeweler who carries stones from this collection and he said we could either trade in to keep in the collection or go to hearts on fire. I am sure we could look at other collections as well. On the other hand, he took my diamond to clean it and never did give me any sort of thoughts on what he estimated the trade in value at. I could probably go out of state to the jeweler it was purchased from and get the full value they appraised it at but it now seems I could go local and just check at a few different places. I do feel a little bad about this diamond- it is quite brilliant and really outshines those of my friends - that and the sentimental value... but, I have always known I wanted something a bit bigger with my finger size. I am a 6.25-6.5 in size but my fingers are quite short/stubby. I have seen I colored diamonds and definitely see a slight color difference, though not with the H colors that I can recall. I would be willing to stay with the SI2 if I could find one withthe brilliance of my current one. I would like my fiance to spend only 2k more, maybe 2500 if I was absolutely in love. I really would like to go as big as possible (without being gaudy - which of course in our budget wouldn''t happen anyway, lol). I am not really sure what the next step is... maybe get it appraised independently?

Welcome!

It might be an idea to see if you could trade in the diamond you have against a new one if possible, as you may get a better deal that way. Alternatively, here is a thread on how to resell diamonds, unfortunately it is usual to only recoup 30 - 50% of what you paid, and there are no guarantees it will sell. So seeing if you can get some trade in value against another diamond might be worth a try.

I would go as big as you can comfortably afford, as it too will shrink.
