Hi all,

I am in Chicago and looked at a stone from a jewelery store on Wabash and not sure if it is a good deal. It looks clean using the loop though I am concerned on the color grading of an I though it appears white to my eye. It is GIA certified with the following specs:

Round Brilliant

Measurements: 7.37 - 7.41 x 4.52 mm

Carat Weight: 1.51

Color Grade: I

Clarity Grade: SI2

Cut Grade: Excellent

Proportions:

Depth: 61.2 %

Table: 58 %

Crown Angle: 34°

Crown Height: 14.5 %

Pavilion Angle: 41.2°

Pavilion Depth: 43.5 %

Star length: 50 %

Lower Half: 80 %

Girdle: Thin to Slightly Thick, Faceted

Culet: None

Finish:

Polish: Very Good

Symmetry: Excellent

Fluorescence: Faint

The price is $8600. Is the price reasonable and is I an ok color grade for GIA?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I have an I stone from WF (ACA) and it faces up whiter than my mother''s G. As long as it looks white to you then don''t worry about it. Compare the stone against others of different color/clarity/cut grades and become comfortable with your preferences. Some people get too caught up in the grading specifics of stones, so don''t let it happen to you. It''s pretty simple, only spend money for differences that are important to you. So if it looks white enough, don''t spend more money to get something that is graded as being "whiter".

I think I''s look plenty white. Go with your eyes and if you love the stone go for it. I think sometimes we get too caught up in the letters and numbers. Good Luck!!

This stone gets a 3.1 on the HCA and 2 and below is advised. Just for comparison''s sake here is a comparable stone from Good Old Gold, H&A with a 1.4 score.

1.53ct I SI1

thanks all, it is easy to get caught up on the specs more than how you like the stone. What is the negative of the 3.1? A lack of sparkle?

Also, how does the price seem? When running the specs through the price comparison tool on this site there is such a large range it is hard to know.

The Holloway Cut Advisor os a tool to weed out the bad ones, the ones that have proportions off in some way that will effect the light return, fire and scintillation. Those are the things that make a stone sparkle. However, people have bought stones that scored low but there eyes told them it was the right stone for them.Sometimes price is the deciding factor.

If you compare two stones that are close to price, color and clarity but one is a better cut than the other, only you can decide which your rather buy. When purchasing over the internet you have to make your choices based on numbers, photos and the vendor's visual description.

A well cut "I" will probably look better than an average cut "I".

This diamond has a steep pavilion angle which probably accounts for the lower HCA score. The HCA may penalize a diamond with such an angle, however the main thing is if you have seen this diamond and like it, I would suggest asking if you can check the diamond out away from the store lights to make sure you still like it in the lighting conditions the ring will be worn in . If you have time, ordering an Idealscope would be really useful to check this diamond out with -
