Thought I had a diamond picked out...

I like the numbers on the .8

Faces up larger, is hiding less weight in both the girdle and the total depth. The VVS/VS is here nor there in terms of the naked eye. The big difference is the colour (which I'm sure you're aware of), and I guess the biggest factor will likely be how sensitive you are to colour and how you're planning to set the stone.

Both are gorgeous. But if we are being nit picky, I prefer the chunky arrows of J better but the H color is hard to pass up. I have a J and love it but the cut difference between the 2 stones are minute and I am not sure that I would notice the difference so I would probably pick the H. The question would be which do YOU prefer? The depth of 62.2 is still acceptable, the cut off number for most PSers is 62.4.

I originally picked out the .8 J diamond. It's going to set in a solitaire. There's only a 6 percent difference in the size of the face and the smaller stone looks more symmetrical to me. So each has advantages in two of the C to me. I've never seen fluorescence in a stone though so I'm not sure what to expect.

I would go for the H-colored stone.

There is a big difference between H and J colors. There is not a big difference between VVS1 and VS1 (and certainly nothing you can see).

I also have a preference for fluorescence, which will help the H seem even 'whiter' in certain lighting environments (just make a quick check with the vendor to see that there aren't any oily/hazy negative effects).

Although I like the proportions of the J more, the H-colored stone would be an easy choice for me.

The J would be too colored for me, I would take the H.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've requested idealscope images and a comparison of both diamonds, and to check for haziness from the fluorescence.

Doing some more research, it appears that GIA grades the diamond in light which may allow the fluorescence to factor into the color grade. Is this true?

What's the reaction you get when someone sees your diamond glow for the first time.. like at a bowling alley?

Yes, this is true. Most people think that fluorescent stones are discounted because of the transparency issue, but the trade also hedges on fluorescent stones because of a probability of overgrading for color.
