Those new Facebook Twitter linkie thingies

Oh I def agree it's not a consistent message. I was talking about the functionality itself, which I can't help but love as a crazy internet junkie. ;))

I have to ditto everything Mara said. The moment ANY of you posted here, it was on the internet, and anyone could have copied and pasted it anywhere they pleased - whether it was FB or not. I don't see any reason to get all upset about it, except that it is a contradictory message about their FB "rules".

In general, people are resisistant to change (I myself included). Even when facebook makes changes, for the next few days the walls are filled with people that are upset with said changes.

I haven't been around here enough to know all the "rules" about what is allowed and what is not. Heck, if I knew exactly what I was signing up for I would have picked a different screen name altogether---it doesn't take a genious to figure out that I have some personal information listed there

The one thing that I am going to agree with is that once you put out information on the internet it is public, regardless of how well hidden we think we are. Noone is ever completely anonomous (especially those that use real pictures in their avatars). If the administrators can trace to what IP address you are typing from (and we know they can after the debacle where people were creating multiple accounts to slam a poster), then I am willing to bet that someone trying hard enough can.

If you want to stay completely private, the only way to guarantee that is to limit what YOU type. That is probably the ONLY thing 100% in YOUR control when it comes to the internet and public blogs.

I hear ya. I'm an internet junkie too, and use four of the five tabs listed. So it's not that I oppose the function at all, but I am not a supporter of hypocrisy.

I am upset that this is a violation of PS policy. Either PS is protecting our privacy or it isn't. I think we should have a private "opt in" so we can contact each other outside of PS. This new policy has no restrictions, so anyone can post anywhere. You don't have to be a genius to find other PS members outside of this forum. We have been asking for PMs and we get this. Holy overkill

It doesn't bother me either way. I mostly use Facebook to promote my business. So, if there's any diamond lovers who like to drink beer or alcohol in general, I probably want them as friends on Facebook as well as being in contact with them here on PS. If someone wants to track me down, I'm pretty visible in the cyberworld, so I guess I'm an easy target.

I don't see the hypocrisy. Lining on my FB page will not allow anyone who is not *already my friend* to find me, will it? (assuming I maintain a private wall of some sort). In which case it does not allow other PSers (not already my friends) to find me.

I'm confused. I just clicked on the F (facebook) icon and nothing happened. What's up? Did I just send some message somewhere or accidently hack in and take over FB?

Ok let me get this straight. If I post something on PS, they can link it to FB for the whole world to see?? My settings on FB are very secure, and have no plans on clicking on these buttons. BUT if PS does this don't they need each person's permission to do so?? Is this a new thing in forum policies, if so I didn't get the memo.

If this is the case, I gotta say I am not going to post here.

Well, considering pictures of expensive jewelry are posted here, there should be absolutely NO linking unless the owner of a piece is first contacted.

Kaleigh, you need to put your Facebook password in order to link to your facebook page.

In my opinion, I don't have a problem. I will not use it to my personal account, but I may use it for the other account.

It was always possible to link anything on PS anywhere else. I've linked non-PSers to PS threads plenty of times. I've never posted to FB but that's always been an option. Everyone who is upset about it might want to re-think posting on internet forums to start with. A friend of mine is having her Internet posting thrown back in her face right now as part of her divorce proceedings. PS is just as public as ever, whether or not the admins make it easier to link out.

By clicking the FB link, it is not giving anyone your information, just an easier way to link to a specific post on PS. It will not show anyone who YOU are on FB.

I understand how people are upset about the hypocrisy, but it's no less "private" than it was before.

...ANYONE can post a visual link from any PS thread to their own FB page (their own page, aka mine not yours Kaleigh).
It doesn't share your FB info with anyone. It's just a link from an internet page to my FB page.

Example...
I am on a SMTR thread and I love someone's ring.
I just go up to the url above (www.pricescope..etc) and copy it.
Then go to my FB profile page.
Click Link.
Paste the url in. And say 'I love this ring!' and hit Post.

Anyone could have done that BEFORE PS made this change to add the icon button.
The icon button just makes it 'one click' to do that...aka easier. (Assuming the one-click actually works, as MC noted it didn't work for her, but I haven't tried it.)

You can do this with ANY page on the internet...not just PS or a forum. I share links all the time of blog posts I like or a new purse I like or whatever.

I suggest people try doing it (not necessarily from PS but go to your fave blog and do what I posted above), and seeing what it actually does too, might help. You can always then go back and delete it.

Mara - It works in colored stones. Not sure why it's not working here yet. Who knows.

FYI...someone could have ALWAYS taken your personal postings and linked to them. They don't need that button to do it.

You just copy the link up above in your browser...go to FB, click link and then paste it and post it. I did that all the time when I was on sites that didn't offer you the one-click option to share. And would be mentally cursing the site for being so luddite that I'd actually have to do that vs just being able to one-click-share.

So, even if admin didn't include those links, people could still easily share ANY info on here to any social media site. I think it's important people realize that (in general).
That's true, but these buttons are in your face, reminding people to share and making it so much easier.

I'm really uncomfortable with this change. I do not want to mix up my Facebook feed and contacts with my Pricescope activity.

I just tried the F button from my last post and this is what it posted as on my FB wall.

http://shar.es/HWXN8
shar.es

So it doesn't say 'Pricescope' or have a description of the thread title or whose post it actually was (mine).

But when I go and copy and paste the actual url (per my prev example) onto my wall it says:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/those-new-facebook-twitter-linkie-thingies.159386/page-2#post-2896168#p2896168
www.pricescope.com

So it says Pricescope but again no 'identifying' information on what that is, or what thread it is or who posted it.

For those who are worried about lots of identifying info being shared, seems like that's not the case. BUT as others have mentioned, people could breadcrumb it back and figure out who people are... or that so and so posts on a site called Pricescope etc. They would just have to click to be taken to the thread.

Seems like the deal is that before we have to copy and then go to our FB page and paste, making this a longer process. So, the benefit of this new feature is it's quick, however, the issue could be that it would become a habit of people to click the FB icon with nearly every thread b/c it's so easy amounting to 10 million PS links over on FB.

Many thanks for explaining this to me Mara, you know I am not up to speed on things. But this makes sense.. Thank you for taking the time , hoping it will help other's that are clueless like me... :cheeky:

Not a fan.
Clutters up the page - we've already got these irritating blog things going on down the right-hand side. Now this...

Agree that what your write in the public domain is exactly that... in the public domain, but the ability to post things to places like Facebook mean that people who might never dream of coming to a diamond forum will now have access to threads they'd never have seen before. Granted anyone could have linked anyway but that is a whole lot different from the one click thing.

I won't stop posting, but I also won't be putting any more photos of my daughter or any gemstone photos up anymore.

If this new feature would make you reconsider what you post, I'm glad the implemented it. I'm reminded of an incident a couple weeks ago, when I was at a party, and overheard a guy telling (warning?) another guy about our LIW forum and the LIW list. He'd obviously spent some time lurking there and was making fun of the ladies who post there. Point is, all kinds of people wander in and out of here without ever posting and are looking at whatever photos you share.

Mine is set to "no" and I still see those boxes, so apparently that doesn't work for everyone.

I HATE those Twitter/FB/etc links, not just here, but in general. I'm getting to the point of information overload and I don't need everything anyone said anywhere being cross-referenced ad nauseam. I've had to hide so many people from my FB feed because they constantly link everything under the sun.

When I went to look at my settings after Davi posted that, mine was set to no and I thought well why the heck are they showing then? So, I left it at no and saved it anyway-and now they aren't showing. So I don't know..maybe it automatically defaults to no but you have to actually save it that way?

It doesn't bother me that they're there, but it certainly is hypocritical on Pricescope's part.

On so many levels... Yes.
