How do these new icon thingies at the top of every post work?
Do they connect you to that person's FB account?
If it does, can PS track that contact, or see what you say to each other?

The facebook button isn't for contact. If you click on it, it will allow you to post the thread to your facebook page. It acts in a similar way that you can share a news story or link on your facebook wall feed.

Ahso! Thanks.
In that case I'll simplify my OP.

I don't understand why it's OK to have social media links on every post yet it's not OK to give someone your name to find you on the same sites. I'm actually shocked to see them and pretty disappointed in the decision to include them.

HH, read MissPrudential's post.

Before I started this thread I looked for, but did not find, an announcement and explanation from admin regarding this.

Yes, I agree. So it's ok for admin to break rules, but not us? Hypocrisy, much?

I REALLY, strongly, have a preference AGAINST having these links. For the EXACT same reason as why I wouldn't share my FB name/contact here.

I would also much rather see the development team fix things that are still a nuisance, over introducing things that are not necessary.

Hi Kenny, let me explain these links a little further.

For instance, if you go onto, say, the Huffington Post and you read a news article that you really like. You have several friends who you know would also enjoy the article. So you click on the little FB box, and it posts the link to this news article on your FB page to share with your friends on FB.

What essentially happens is that people can post links to certain threads/posts on PS to other social networking sites. However, up until now, we are not allowed to even post our FB contacts here on PS. So this, in theory, makes no sense.

Totally agree with HH and Kama.

It may not be a direct link that announces to the world that Ms X on FB is really HH, but it's a breadcrumb trail that would possibly allow someone to figure out who a PS'er is. And to me that's no different than me telling a PS'er who I am on FB. At least then I'm publicly giving permission for people to seek me out on FB vs sleuthing me out from my PS posts. But I don't think you can have it go one way and not the other. It's a contradiction. It should be totally open or nothing.

I hate these links. I want to stay anonymous on PS and I'm afraid I'll click on something inadvertently and give the game away.

Completely agree.

Me too. I have a lot of PS FB friends, but that's because I want them to be. The idea that I could be traced by others due to things that I've posted here makes me uneasy.

Do not like!

I don't like this at all! I find it very uncomfortable.

;(
Me no likey.

not making any opinions one way or another.

But uh... What are the other icons after FB and twitter?

Am I just that old and out of touch???

I am not crazy about it because I don't really like social networking stuff an I would prefer them to be removed.

But I don't think it is a compromise to anonymity so much. If I choose not to post links on FB, then I remain anonymous. If I DID choose to post a thread on FB, only my FB friends could see it, and they already know who I am on FB and, presumably, I am ok with them knowing who I am on PS. They are my friends, I could just tell them who I am. Or I could post a thread and not say who I am, but that would be very odd.

I suppose the only issue would be if one of my friends posts a link and they know who I am on PS and then calls me out without my permission?? But that sort of crap is why I hate FB ;)) And that small possibility is why i would like the links removed.

3rd one is Reddit. 4th one is StumbleUpon. I didn't know the last one either, it's apparently FriendFeed.

If people don't like the new additions, they don't have to use them. It's simple. Just don't click any of the sharing links.

But I'm not surprised at the decision to include them. Sharing links from sites is all about viral marketing and building brand awareness. If someone did click to share to their FB page, then all their friends would see that they shared that (assuming your wall is visible) and then realize oh look Pricescope. What's that? Oh it's a diamond forum! Oh how fun. Let me register. Or let me LIKE Pricescope on Facebook. etc etc. It's a smart business decision by the mods to include them (unless no one uses them lol).

AND just from an internet-use perspective, I am really happy to see them on here, I think every site out there should have share links even if I don't plan to use them. I like the option.

It's not a smart business decision if current users decide to stop posting. Newbies come and no one is here to help them. Not so bright.

And, even if I don't use them because I don't like them. Someone else is now taking my PERSONAL postings (possibly) and linking to them.

I think the only acceptable way to have these linky things is to only allow them on the Help related forums ie:Rocky Talky, Journal, Diamond Research, Colored Stones. All Hangout and FHH, BWW should be left out of this marketing ploy. Many of us write very personal info that doesn't need to be all over FB.

FYI...someone could have ALWAYS taken your personal postings and linked to them. They don't need that button to do it.

You just copy the link up above in your browser...go to FB, click link and then paste it and post it. I did that all the time when I was on sites that didn't offer you the one-click option to share. And would be mentally cursing the site for being so luddite that I'd actually have to do that vs just being able to one-click-share.

So, even if admin didn't include those links, people could still easily share ANY info on here to any social media site. I think it's important people realize that (in general).

Ditto to everything Mara has said... these little icons are not facilitating ANYTHING NEW or sharing ANY MORE information than what was already out there.

Maybe not, but it just makes it that much easier since it's right there on the page about 50 times.

Mara, I don't think it's just about others disliking the new feature. It's about the contradictory messages that the mods are sending out. You can get banned for sharing info on how to to contact you on other social networking websites. So what makes this okay? Rules are not unidirectional. If FB->PS is not okay, PS->FB should in the same vein not be okay as well.

If anything its one more piece of straw on the camels back
