@kenny thanks for the interesting article. I fear what I have always feared. The saying the masses are a**** comes to mind. As always I hope for the best but expect the worst.

Science needs to prevail over politics but given the fact that Trump's approval rating is still strong (I think) I don't have much optimism at all.

I am hoping I am proven wrong and that people use science and (real) common sense and have clarity when they vote in the upcoming election.

Science has become about money and politics.
There is so much junk science out there and many so called experts that are nothing but opportunists.
Medical research has because all about patents and $$$$$$$$ rather than helping people.
The mba culture has corrupted science just like it has business and government and healthcare.
 
Lets look at the responce to covid-19 rather than the world coming together to fight it, it has turned into a race to the patent office by the usual scumbags.

I don't disagree with you @Karl_K. My DH is in the environmental field and according to him it is, to a (large) degree, quite corrupt. I am not my DH and will not speak for him just to say that according to him while climate change is real much of what is written is corrupt and has a less than noble goal in mind.

Having said that I am a believer in science far above the judgement most people show and I will always go by the hard facts as presented by science even when much is still unknown.

I don’t believe things always work out.
But I’m hoping somehow our best of the best (politicians/scientists) will rise to the occasion and that the people will too. Ultimately. Fairytale? Perhaps. But in my heart I always hope for the best.

I wrote it yesterday-
politics is slimy business
but perhaps when the going is so bleak we will rise to meet the challenge.

No matter how it works out I just want it to work out. There’s too much at stake to leave it to chance. Right now I’m watching the NYC plan in place. Please let great minds prevail and let us be the best we can be. Now more than ever this is critical.

Putting petty differences aside to work as a team. I do believe in united we stand divided we fall.
And when I say “united” I mean the entire world.

Trump tried the buy the trial vaccines from Germany by taking over one of the leading companies developing vaccines - so count him in as one of those "scumbags"

I recall the story, that was weird but I think I got sick while it was playing out and have no clue what the story is now about it.
It does make sense to develop under fda protocols because they are accepted around the world where UE and AU protocols are not so attempts were made to move as much of it as possible here.

Yes. We weren't impressed. Especially as the lab is partly state funded
 
I don't know whether the story about him trying to buy the vaccine is true or not. Reuters is usually pretty reputable in terms of their fact checking/multiple source requirement for something like that, but no one's infallible, and I'd want to have more conclusive sourcing before I necessarily took it as truth. The administration denies it, as does the lab, but that's the problem with an administration that lies and lies and lies- their denials are essentially worthless.

As to FDA protocols, yes, they are accepted worldwide, but I believe we're party to several treaties that allow inspection/manufacture/export of FDA-regulated products worldwide (particularly from EU countries). If I'm recalling correctly, hundreds of countries manufacture FDA-approved drugs for export, and 90% of trials are done outside of North America, so that doesn't really hold water as an argument for the US to own the vaccine.

Australian 60 mins interviewed one of the head scientists/researchers that works in a German Lab and she confirmed Trump did attempt to buy the whole lab/company and the German government and owners of the lab prevented it.

The guy that was their representative that met with Trump was fired. I do however, really admire the way Trump covered his tracks with reports afterwards that no he didn't try and buy it when it was very clear that he did.
