I am posting this thread because of a report on 60 Minutes last Sunday night. My original thread was removed because a phrase I used was seen as having a racial bias. I did not mean for it to be taken that way and I do not condone racial slurs, profiling or attacks against anyone because of their ethnic heritage.
This picture will be very upsetting but these dogs need our help. **edited because it was upsetting for many forum members** not photoshop this. I copied it straight from the HSI website when I made my donation yesterday. If you go to hsi.org (Humane Society International website) these are the kinds of images you will see. This gentle, intelligent animal knows the fate that awaits him as he sits in a wire cage waiting to be killed and sold as a delicacy in a wet market. We have to do all that we can to stop this barbarism. **edited by moderator, these happen all over the world, including the US. Let’s bring race or nationalism into this** There will be other viruses, other pandemics, if these wet markets aren‘t shut down ,and soon.

To anyone who wants to leave a comment, I hope it will be one that may help in the rescue of these dogs, or at least be kind in it’s nature. I am fully aware of the cruelty that we human animals inflict on other animals. I wish I could save them all, the race horses, the greyhounds, all of them I stopped eating meat decades ago, am working on giving up chicken and eat mostly plants. My family has rescued countless dogs and cats over the years, even when it was a real strain on our budget to do so. Please know that what I am posting here is extremely upsetting to me. I am doing what I can to shine the light of day on this dark, ugly mess. I don't post often but I have read and enjoyed many, many Pricescope discussions over the years since I joined. At the ripe old age of 70, I’m not always sure what you are talking about ( eg. had no idea what a “Push present “ was) but I have learned so much about so many different topics and I have also learned that PS members are kind, know, and open with their feelings , and so many of you are animal lovers like me.
If anyone has a Facebook page ( I don’t) ,a blog ( again, I don’t) or any other venue you can use to reach more people and let them know what’s going on in **edited by moderator, again, do not choose a culture to shame**), I hope that you will take the time to post and ask people to donate to HSI or any other worthy organization, if they are able. I know these are financially difficult times for many people and not everyone can donate. But a call or email to 60 Minutes is something everyone can do. Please help in any way that you can. This has to stop!

Contact information for 60 Minutes program. Please call to leave a message asking 60 Minutes to do an in depth program on the wet markets.212-975 3247. Email for same reason: [email protected]
Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
jeanie

Tragic and heartbreaking. I cannot watch but I am aware. I wish I had my post from your thread yesterday because I went to the trouble to research and post links and I will see if I can recreate that tomorrow. But I just want to say thank you for taking the time to share this very important issue.

Animals are sentient beings. I am not debating whether or not it is moral to eat animals. I am discussing the way they are raised and under many circumstances tortured before they are murdered.

Animals feel joy, excitement, fear and terror. They feel happiness and they feel anxiety and sadness and pain. Pigs scream in fear when they are being slaughtered. It's unconscionable. They are living beings.

Again, to be clear, I am not debating the ethics of eating animals. I am not pretending I am perfect. I was a vegan for many decades and am no longer but that is a topic for another thread another day perhaps.

This thread is about the unhygienic condition many (most?) wet markets exist in and also the treatment of animals at the wet markets. The inhumane treatment. At wet markets all over the world. We have 80 in NYC alone. Wet markets that violate hygienic practice becoming a huge liability to the safety of all.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) have warned us against the risks of factory farms for years. The unsanitary living conditions inside CAFOs weaken animals’ immune systems and increase their susceptibility to infection and disease. The factory farms’ response has been to pump the animals full of antibiotics that make their way into our food supply and onto our dinner plates, systematically fostering in humans a lethal resistance to the medicines that once quelled everyday infections. Such practices have brought humanity to the point that the WHO now estimates that more than half of all human diseases emanate from animals.

The practices employed within the wet markets, the way animals are treated, are barbaric. This is not isolated to a single country or race or religion. It is a widespread problem and we have to do something about it or we will forever be at great risk of infectious diseases that have the potential of becoming pandemics.

Please consider signing the petition to stop the unhygienic conditions the wet markets operate under and also the cruel and inhumane treatment of the animals. :( Do it for not just the animals but for the safety and health of the world.

I leave you with a quote that resonates strongly with me. And I hope it does with you too.

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
Mahatma Gandhi

Missy,
Thank you so much for your post. I really appreciate everything you wrote. I‘m learning new things every day about what we humans are doing to other animals and our planet. These are things I’d rather not know but I can‘t unlearn them now. Everyone......,please sign the petition at change.org. It sounds very trite and corny but I truly believe that together, we can make a difference for these animals!

I am adding one more plea to everyone to please call or email CBS to urge 60 Minutes to report on the wet markets. I had no idea they were so widespread.
Also, go to www.change.org ( thank you again,Missy) and sign the petition Missy mentioned. There are other ban-the-wet market petitions there too. Sign them, please! If you are fortunate enough to be able to make a donation to HSI, or any of the organizations at change.org, please do that too.
Many thanks,
jeanie

It’s hard for me. I can’t see it. I sign the petition.

It’s hard for me. I can’t see it. I sign the petition.

Hi Joelly,
It’s hard for me too. I won‘t ever get these images out of my memory. The people who do this to animals..how do they sleep at night? Thank you and a big, big hug for following through and signing the petition. Come on , fellow PSers..... strength in numbers! Please sign, phone, email, do something!

Since I don’t want to kill myself this weekend, I have skipped over this and frankly, I’m quite angry that you didn’t put KILLING DOGS on your title. Really, what aj jerk move.

I want it ended also, BUT DO YOU NOT CARE ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF STRESS MANY OF US ARE UNDER???

This is a ****ing jewelry board. I’m reporting this post.

Whitewave,
I answered your thread warning people not to read mine. I understand that you are going through some very difficult personal challenges during a time that is very hard for all of us. I hope that better days are ahead for you and your family.
The intent of my thread was to make as many people as possible aware of the wet markets, the unbelievable cruelty to animals and the threat they pose to the entire world because another pandemic will start in one of those wet markets if they are allowed to continue.

If you succeed in shutting down this thread, you silence someone who is trying to help stop this barbarism. Perhaps I’m making no difference at all. I dont know, but I have to try. If your conscience will allow you to do that, then I hope that you will also find a way to help these animals in a way that doesn‘t show the truth to anyone who is caring enough, and strong enough to see the truth and want to help.

Thanks jeaniefish. Signed. I'm hoping that the dangers of wet markets to human health simultaneously raises awareness of animal exploitation in general. What I don't think is going to help is when people from other countries "shout" at other countries to stop doing something. I just remember when Paul McCartney opposed our program of culling our kangaroos. I remembered thinking at the time "what would he know about our issues with kangaroos". There is a more subtle approach that would be more likely to bring about lasting change (and not drive cruel animal practices underground). I applaud people, with the knowledge in these areas, and those skilled with the diplomatic skills who attempt to effect change.

I attended the WildlifeSOS Founder's Trip in India earlier this year (before Corona!) and I was amazed by the work they do. Rescuing elephants from lives of relentless work and abuse was only a small fraction of the work they do for all animals who find themselves in trouble. They are also very involved in Conservation work. Getting behind organizations such as this with dedicated people who are working within their own countries is a great way of feeling involved and hopeful rather than succumbing to despair at the hopelessness and cruelty of animal abuse. In India there is Friendicoes who work with dogs. They discovered the men in Nepal were very kind with dogs so employed them to look after the dogs and paid them more than they were earning before, therefore enabling them to look after their families better. I think there is a charity in Thailand - Soi Foundation that does amazing work with dogs. There's some good work going on out there done by people who aren't daunted by the enormity of the task.

Thanks for what you are doing to raise awareness. It's important work!

I made myself watch a video on this topic a few years ago. I will never get the images out of my mind from that, so I won't watch this one. I signed the petition.

Here's another petition to help the animals.
Do not scroll down and do not click onto the video. The petition is at the top right of the page. It is easy to sign without looking at any disturbing pics or videos. FYI.

Peta has a petition too. Not linking it because one has to scroll through upsetting pics to get to the petition but if you can handle it please google it and sign the petition. Do what you can to help any way you can.

Animals lives matter. Human decency matters. Please don't turn a blind eye. The animals need us. We are their voice.

Thank you everyone, and please do call the CBS voicemail number if you can( 212 975 3247) and urge 60 Minutes to do a full segment on the wet markets. You may not want to watch it, and I may not want to either, but as many people as possible need to know what we know.
If you are a fan of the NPR program “ Think with Krys Boyd” ( think.kera.org)yesterday’s (April 30) segment was an interview with the New Yorker magazine staff writer and novelist Lawrence Wright. He was discussing his latest book, The End of October. A Novel and the interview gave me goosebumps. The book centers on a pandemic that resembles what we are living through now, including an indifferent president of the U.S. who puts his VP in charge of handling the impending crisis! He sent his final manuscript to his publisher BEFORE anyone knew what was about to happen IRL.
I am not ,in any way, promoting his book. He did mention” researching animals “ as part of gathering material for the book. When I heard that, I called in and asked him to talk about the wet markets. I hope that brief discussion piqued some listeners’ curiosity enough to want to find out more on their own.
I’m signing every petition I can find and making as many donations as I can afford to make. I’m not asking anyone to give money they don‘t have, especially now. However, many of us have extra time right now and using some of it to help dogs and other animals is just about the best way I can think of to use it wisely.

As I stated in the other thread, @jeaniefish, thank you for drawing attention to this. I appreciate it.

Hi OboeGal,
I appreciate your support.
I wish that there was no need to do this, but I can‘t look away if there is anything I can do to make even a small difference. There was a short report on the ABC evening news tonight. I had to leave the room because I knew what was coming. I hoped the visual proof stunned, shocked and sickened everyone who saw it.

BTW, I love your collie avatar! Is that your dog? When we were kids, my little sister and I were so in love with collie dogs that my sister snuck out of her kindergarten classroom and followed a “ visiting” neighborhood collie home from school.Fortunately , the collie knew how to cross a busy street safely because my little sister did not!

I'm going to agree with whitewave on this, because I feel that the OP has been insensitive. This is a hot topic issue I agree, however the image above does is not really the best for a board like this.

OP, hopefully you won't post it again if it gets removed.

Signed and shared as well. Thank you, @jeaniefish❤

Thank you @maita13. I appreciate your support. I am feeling very beaten up by the comments of a few other members for what I‘m trying to do to make others aware of this horrible situation. I never expected profanity laced rants In response. I won‘t be adding anything more but hope that others will read the information and do whatever they feel comfortable doing to help these dogs and other animals. I am going to try to remove the HSI picture of that poor dog. For a few other PS members, the horrible truth is too much too deal with right now.

I think that's a reasonable compromise. I don't think this thread should be taken down; the issue is valid and there's good information and encouragement for those who wish to take active steps concerning it. I would like to see that remain and continue. However, since many have expressed experiencing deep distress at the image, it would be sensitive and thoughtful to others' needs during a difficult time to remove it.

Yes, my avatar is my current collie girl! She's six years old and can be a bit of a handful - but is adored nonetheless. I've been obsessed with dogs, especially collies, since my earliest memories, having grown up with Lassie all over TV. It was my dream my entire life to have one in my life, but I wasn't able to do so, or even have a dog at all, until my late 30s. Since then, I've been blessed with 4 collies as well as a collie/German shepherd mix prior to her, all adopted from local/regional collie rescues. They have been probably the best part of my life since then - I don't think I could ever go back to not sharing life with at least one. They are the absolute best. I've told DH that when/if I reach a point when I can no longer take care of or share daily life with one, then that is the point at which I'm done! (Although I grudgingly admit we might need to "downsize" to a sheltie at some point!)

Oboegal,
Lassie fan, me too! Rin RinTin was a handsome guy but Lassie always was top TV star dog in our house.
We have had the privilege of loving two shelties during our marriage. Of our nine dogs total, they were the only ones who were not rescues. So smart and so full of personality.

I have asked the PS moderators to delete the HSI picture in my initial thread post. I hope that everything else can stay , for the information it contains. Most people seemed to appreciate it, learn from it and many had more information to contribute to it as well.
Thanks for your message.
Jeanie

@jeaniefish I don't believe I've "met" you until just this week, but you seem like a kind, loving, and generous person. Thank you for taking action on this issue and giving us information on how to help.

I end every day by watching a few videos from The Dodo. No matter what sort of day I've had - something I watch here will make me smile.

Please don't remove this thread. If anything must be done just remove the photo in the first post though I don't think that is necessary.

To everyone reading this post if you love the animals please do what you can to help them. Even just signing any petition for their safety and humane treatment is helpful. Please.

The animals deserve a voice. The animals deserve humane treatment. They are sentient beings. They are living breathing beings.

Hi, @jeaniefish! I was debating whether or not to add anything else. The extent of my participation here on PS hangout is mostly pressing the "like" button when I agree with comments made by members. I barely have the energy to get out of bed on most days let alone carry on a lucid discussion with anyone on just about anything...but I've been thinking of you.

I'm so sorry you feel very beaten up by some of the members' reaction. I do, however, understand where they're coming from. I cannot speak for anyone but from my perspective and own experience, there are days when even the issue I care most about is too difficult to handle. It doesn't mean I'm dispassionate or indifferent about it. I just couldn't handle it at that moment. And I find that my coping mechanism(s) can only expressed in two ways- I either retreat or attack, for lack of a better term (my poor partner has borne my moods so patiently for 23 years). So don't take it to heart, jeanie.

That being said, I hope you continue your advocacy. I greatly admire people who advocate for those who cannot defend themselves. It takes a lot of courage, conviction and the energy to manage expectations. Not everyone can meet you where you are. Years of therapy taught me that.

And please don't think you've not made a difference! Friends and family have shared my petition, thanks to you! Think of this way, at least you got a discussion going. I started a thread in Hangout and got zero replies:lol::lol: . Focus on the wins, not the losses. Life's too short- my son taught me that.
