Hello All,

I have been lurking on this site for a couple of months and think I may have finally found the ONE. It is at a B&M, so no pics, but here are the stats per AGS:

1.350 H VS1 AGS000, GIA Ex/Ex (H&A under IdealLoupe in the store)
Table: 56%
Depth: 60.7%
Crown Ang: 34.0
Pav Ang: 40.7
Girdle, Faceted: 1.0-1.4%
Pav %: 42.8
Crown %: 14.8
Culet: Pointed
Price: $7,851

This stone is beautiful and comes w/ both GIA and AGS certs (is this normal?). The GIA is a full cert and the AGS provides the above info and cut grading but defers to the GIA cert for color and clarity ("Reference GIA Diamond Grading Report XXXX"). My only concern is the color, which according to the sales reps was due to poor lighting. When we looked at the stone under a diamond light, however, it appeared very white. The in-store "GIA guy" pulled out his master CZs and determined that the stone fell within the mid to high end of the H grade. It was already dark out when I viewed the stone, so I couldn''t take it into the sunlight to make sure the "lighting" claim was valid. I probably won''t have time to visit the store in person again. Will I be disappointed later? Are GIA color ratings as good as AGS? Also, FYI, the plan is for a platinum setting.

Again, the hearts and arrows looked crisp and the arrows are definitely visible to the unaided eye. Initially, I had planned for VS2, but the price seems competitive, so I''m leaning towards a purchase. The inclusions are virtually impossible to see with a loupe (only two of ''em), are not black, and are out towards the edge of the stone.

Input PLEASE!!!

specs look good price is good if you like it snag it :}

By the number, SE, this is a GORGEOUS stone. You've also done a visual and you think it's beautiful, so no worries. Sounds amazing.

Don't worry about the H color. I own an AGS H stone that is WHITE WHITE.....and one of my coworkers just bought an H stone from GIA. We put them next to one another, and they ARE the same to our eyes.

It will look WHITE and it will be beautiful in platinum.

Congratulations on a great find! Remember that pictures are MANDATORY~!

Thank you strm and aljd!

Any of the big boys care to weigh in (CutNut, Rhino, DAtlas, Mara)?

Well I'm not a big boy but I will weigh in.

The stone looks great by numbers! Do you have an IdealScope? If so, look at it under the scope to assist in determining the light return.

As for AGS vs GIA..both are great labs and strict on color and clarity. I don't think you'd have anything to worry about. Though do have to say that the sales guy saying the H color grade was due to 'bad lighting' is a ridiculous claim because obviously if you are a GIA or AGS grader, you don't do your work under 'bad lighting'. Nice line of bull though!

But if it's an H...I still wouldn't worry. My new e-ring stone is 1.29c and its an H graded by GIA and it's very white. If I put it against a white piece of paper and look sideways, I may see the tiniest warmness but face down it's a white sparkler. Well cut stones face up whiter than your average maul cut as well.

Make sure the return policy is good, get a 2nd *independent* opinion when you buy it, then if all checks out, enjoy your new beautiful stone! What are the plans for the future/final setting?

Great eye and seems like a great choice. Nice price point as well, esp for offline.

Good luck!

The "bad lighting" comment sounds like a rookie/know nothing sales clerk talking. When a diamond is graded, more than one grader looks at the stone. Several graders must agree upon the grade.

H is a great color in a well cut stone. Maximizes your buck and you get a very white and bright diamond.

everything seems to be right for that stone,Including the price.
The only question I have is why would they have 2 certs for it?

other than that, I think you've got a nice stone ,go for it.

Still not a 'big guy', but here goes...

Two certs... given the good cut proportions, maybe they just wanted to get the AGS 'seal of approval' on the cut? The GIA report is skimpy on info, and the stone could have got into the store with just that. I supose the two certs have been obtained for different reasons? Who knows? Also, they might have fealt that the stone deserves a better color grade . Two are better than one!

Not too many would call H 'colored'. It would be great to see the stone outside, for example. It is possible that yellowish lights or the color of surrounding objects in the store altered to 'look' of the stone.

This one sounds good to me

I think H is a good "color" for an ideal cut round with great light return. When I bought my fiancee's engagement ring, I went with E VS2 because I wanted to make sure it was very white, especially since a good portion of the bottom of the stone is visible. However, after learning a lot more about diamonds, I bought an H VS2 for my class ring, and face up I can't see any color differece. They are both very white. Face down against a white background compared to the E, I think I can see a very little bit of tint through the bottom of the H stone, but I can barely see it and it is not noticeable by itself. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another H "color" stone again, and I used to think I was color sensitive. Your stone sounds great, and as long as you like the way it looks, that's what is most important.

You happen to have a set of proportions there that I am very fond of (34-34.5 crown, 40.7-40.9 pavilion). While I have tested H&A stones of these proportions and have gotten various optical results depending upon minor facet cutting I will say that none of them have been bad.

(if you want to see various results drop me an email and I'll link you to a couple of stones of these dimensions). 1.3xct in the clarity/color you found is not an easy find so I'd say buy it before I do.

Attached is a GemReader file of what you very possibly could have. Hope that helps.

Regarding the two reports, AnA you are right - it is fairly common to see this: a normal GIA report plus an AGS report with cut info only. Next to clarity and color the AGS report will say '***'. Since this costs more, it is often done for very very well cut stones only.

Thank you everyone! And yes, as speculated, the sales reps explained that the stone had been submitted to AGS for cut analysis only (since GIA lacks in this department). The AGS cert does not provide any color or clarity conclusions (entered as "*****" for both), and refers to the GIA cert.

I think I'm going to take the plunge!!!

Anyone see any reason why I shouldn't?

Thanks!!

Looks like a winner. Go for it! Congrats!

So excited......what's the magic number? How many times do you want to hear "BUY IT" before you feel ready?
2.gif

Here's a hint......if you keep waffling, there won't be a decision left.....someone else who knows a good thing when he sees it will buy it first.

This is a no-brainer stone -- buy it! It sounds spectactular, but still get the independent appraisal to confirm that everything is as it should be. If it specs to what you have quoted, & you've seen it and love it, don't look back. You've found a terrific stone.

GONE!!! Bought it, and it's absolutely beautiful. Couldn't be happier. Will post pics once it's been mounted. I brought it by my local EightStar dealer and he said this is the only stone he's seen that comes close to 8* in terms of cut quality (he examined it under the FireScope) -- he added it would be nearly impossible to find a worthy replacement.
