Thanks to everyone for your help so far. I''m trying to choose between two diamonds, with the following specifications. They will go on a platinum band with a Tiffany setting:

Diamond 1:
0.71c
E
VS1
Ideal
Table 55%
Depth 61.3%
Crown 33.5%
Pavilion 41%
GIA certified
HCA: 1
Cost: $3300

Diamond 2:
0.92
E
VS2
Ideal
Table 59%
Depth 60%
Crown 34.5%
Pavilion 41%
GIA certified
HCA: 2.1
Cost: $4200

A lot of you really know your stuff on here, so could anyone suggest which they think is better?

Both look very good in plain sight and I can''t make my mind up. The 0.92c diamond looks like it might be better value for money, but if the smaller diamond is a better cut then I think I''d rather go with that.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Or should I just put a poll up to decide??

Help!

are you sure these are certified by gia? they do not use "ideal"

I don''t think the 1st one is a better cut than the second beyond any doubt (even by the numbers, the both should be GIA Excellent and potentially AGS0). You said they were both looked very good and you couldn''t pick. So I take it they were both equally well cut to your eyes. If the first one was that much better, it should have jumped out at you but it did''t.

I agree with you that the second one is a good value based on a search of similar diamonds. It''s close enough to the 1 ct mark, so it will look close enough to a 1 ct diamond. That comes in handy for the times when your girlfriend shows off her ring to her friends. My vote is for the second one. When in doubt, go bigger.

I Agree with wahtme, if it is comparable with the smaller diamond, and that one did not jump up and say "PICK ME!!!", then go bigger. It is a fairly good deal, from what I know. Have fun buying it.

Mike: Sorry, ideal was the term I''ve used. I think the dealer said it was excellent. Is that the GIA term? Both are GIA certified - the larger had the proper certificate, the smaller one just had a photocopy. I assume that''s because it wasn''t owned by the dealer, he would have to sell it to me to get the actual certificate.

whatmeworry: To me, they are equally cut - I couldn''t tell the difference between the two. I get the impression that statistically, the smaller is technically the better cut. But if they look the same to the naked eye then there''s no benefit.

A Day Late: Thanks. The bigger one is more expensive though! Hehe. Would she prefer a smaller diamond and a $900 designer handbag?

Thanks for your feedback, I was 50/50 on the decision but am swinging towards the bigger one now. I''ll look at them both again tomorrow....crunch time
